Revealed - the greatest Britons of all time

The top 10 greatest Britons of all time - chosen by the public - have been revealed. None of the finalists, to put to a final vote to find the greatest for a BBC2 series, is still alive.

McCartney is out and Lennon is in while Diana, Princess Of Wales makes the grade but her former husband Prince Charles does not.

For the next few weeks historians and celebrities will profile their favourites in a series of programmes for the station.

Thousands of votes have already been cast over several months to find a top 100 who will be counted down as the great Britons series kicks off on Sunday night.

Among those in the lower reaches who failed to make the 10 were Captain James Cook, Sir Francis Drake and Sir Bob Geldof.

The Queen fails to make it into the top 10, but Elizabeth I does.

The full list is: Isambard Kingdom Brunel; Winston Churchill; Oliver Cromwell; Charles Darwin; Diana, Princess of Wales; Queen Elizabeth I; John Lennon; Horatio Nelson; Isaac Newton; William Shakespeare.

BBC2 controller Jane Root said: "I think the top 10 is a really interesting mix of contenders and we've got some fantastic presenters all desperate for their Great Briton to win so we're in for a really exciting competition.

"I hope people all around the country will be moved by the passion in their argument and will join in the debate and get voting."

Among those arguing for their favourites will be comic Alan Davies who will be putting the case for Lennon, while Jeremy Clarkson is behind Brunel.

I can't believe that plank Robbie Williams got in the Top 100 and someone like twice Formula 1 World Champion Jim Clark(one of the top 5 F1 drivers of all time) didn't get in. Pandering to the youth methinks.

I was wondering the same thing. I really hope John wins...that'd be so cool, but I still wish that Ringo would've gotten in the 100.

The idea that Diana makes the top ten over Chaucer, Queen Victoria or the Duke of Wellington is already giving me agitas. Not to mention out-ranking Paul McCartney...

Who's up for some pre-list speculation? Among McCartney, Harrison, Freddy Mercury, Boy George, Bono, Elgar and Johnny Rotten, what's going to be the top-to-bottom rankings? (Assuming we disregard actual postion; one controversey at a time here.)

I want to see the rest of the list, to figure out where everyone else ranked. I have the sneaking suspicion that the bigger controversial placings are going to be mid-list.

I don't know if it's still too late to vote or not, but the link still works on the site. To vote (for John, of course ), go here.

I saw a very tiny part of the BBC2 program yesterday evening and when I got there, they were just doing nr. 61 (I may be wrong a few numbers), which is George Harrison.

Some was shown from the Bangla Desh concert and also some old interviews black & white from the sixties.

That's really cool! I wish we received those channels with our satelite dish. Maybe we do, come to think of it. I'd love to see when they air the Lennon bit.

I'm glad George ended far above Marie Stopes.

More glad about 'Sir' Bob Geldof, never understood why he got that 'Sir' thing. Who was the first to do a benifit concert?

I think its very rude that people just ignored Ringo like that. After all, he was a Beatle too. That's what really ticks me off some times. People just overlook Ringo and say he was lucky to be in the band, or he's the "token member." I would like to know who these people think they are and have they listened to any Beatles' records lately to see just how important Mr. Starr was to the band's success.

Ringo is such a sweet guy. You can just see that. I'm sure it matters less to him than any of us. He's probably like, "aww bloody hell, who cares? They never gave Gandhi the Nobel Peace Prize."

Don't worry. Ringo's going to get his glory one day. But in the mean time, yay for John!!!And the others of course.

Default Re: Revealed - the greatest Britons of all time

Well, let's look at the musicial folks, seperated from the rest of the pack:

17 Michael Crawford
19 Sir Paul McCartney
29 David Bowie
46 Boy George
56 Sir Cliff Richard
58 Freddie Mercury
59 Dame Julie Andrews
60 Edward Elgar
62 George Harrison
75 Sir Bob Geldof
85 Sir Richard Branson
86 Bono
87 John Lydon (Johnny Rotten)

I'm not sure I really agree with this positioning. I like Paul as much as the next lister here, but that far above Elgar? George could probably be up a few places overall, maybe closer to TE Lawrence's place. Otherwise (he said starting on a rant), why Johnny Rotten? If we expanded the list a few spots out, would T. Rex be on it, possibly high enough to put poor Monty off it? (And let's be serious, Montgomery beats Rommel at El Alamen and he only rates #88?) And what's Michael Crawford doing that high up? How the hell did he beat out both Steven Hawking and the Queen? And what does it say that Bowie and Guy Fawkes are so damn close together; Ziggy Stardust and the Gunpowder Plotters, anyone? About the only justice is that of the three big queens on the list, Boy George came in below both Victoria and Boudicca. But really, now Cliff Richard over Freddy Mercury?!? Nelson might have been right to assume that there always will be an England, but if this is the direction they're going in, well...
