Default UK chart info

This is about topping the UK singles and albums charts at once in the same week:

From "The Guinness Book Of British Hit Albums" (1995):

No. 1 single and album in the same week:

Many acts over the years have claimed the top spot in the singles charts, and many acts have claimed the number one position in the albums charts. But only 41 different acts have achieved the feat of holding the top placing in both charts in the same week.

The first was Elvis Presley, in the week ending 26 January 1961, and the 41st was Robson Green and Jerome Flynn, in the week ending 2 December 1995.

The full list in alphabetical order:

ABBA
Adam & The Ants

Wet Wet Wet

In addition, both Paul McCartney and Phil Collins have held top spot in the albums charts in the same week that they have duetted at the top of the singles charts, while Irene Cara and John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John have had singles at the top in the same week that the various artists soundtrack album featuring their number one hit single has led the album charts.

John Lennon, Gary Numan and The Shadows have all achieved the double top in more than one way. Lennon has done it solo and as a Beatle, Numan managed it first as Tubeway Army, and then nine weeks later as Gary Numan. The Shadows did the double in October 1961, before doing it again with Cliff Richard in 1962 and again in 1963. Cliff Richard has the longest span of double top weeks, over almost 27 years between January 1962 and December 1988. Both Elvis Presley (1961 to 1977) and Queen (1975 to 1991) have each topped both charts over a span of over 16 years.

Most weeks at the top of both charts:

45.....The Beatles (15 different runs)
22.....Elvis Presley (7 different runs)
13.....ABBA (4 different runs)
11.....Cliff Richard (4 different runs)

The 14 acts to have topped both charts more than once (i.e. with different singles and albums) are:

The Beatles (14 times)
Elvis Presley (6 times)
ABBA (4 times)
The Police (3 times)
Queen (3 times)
Cliff Richard (3 times)
The Rolling Stones (3 times)
Michael Jackson (twice)
Madonna (twice)
Gary Numan/Tubeway Army (twice)
Shadows (twice)
Rod Stewart (twice)
T Rex (twice)
Wet Wet Wet (twice)

Most consecutive weeks at the top of both charts:

SIX WEEKS

Cliff Richard & The Shadows ("The Young Ones" and "The Young Ones", from 11 January 1962)

The Beatles ("From Me To You" and "Please Please Me", from 11 May 1963)

John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John (("Summer Nights" and "Grease", from 7 October 1978)

FIVE WEEKS

The Beatles ("I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "With The Beatles", from 12 December 1963)

Celine Dion ("Think Twice" and "The Colour Of My Love", from 4 February 1995)

FOUR WEEKS

Elvis Presley ("Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "GI Blues", from 26 January 1961)

Elvis Presley ("Surrender" and "GI Blues", from 1 June 1961)

Elvis Presley ("Rock-A-Hula-Baby/Can`t Help Falling In Love" and "Blue Hawaii", from 22 February 1962)

Elvis Presley ("Good Luck Charm" and "Blue Hawaii", from 24 May 1962)

The Beatles ("She Loves You" and "Please Please Me", from 12 September 1963)

The Beatles ("I Feel Fine" and "Beatles For Sale", from 17 December 1964)

The Beatles ("Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out" and "Rubber Soul", from 23 December 1965)

The Beatles ("Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby" and "Revolver", from 18 August 1966)

Rod Stewart ("Sailing" and "Atlantic Crossing", from 6 September 1975)

ABBA ("Fernando" and "Greatest Hits", from 8 May 1976)

Wet Wet Wet ("Love Is All Around" and "End Of Part One", from 30 July 1994)

The week before the "I Feel Fine/Beatles For Sale" combination topped the charts for four weeks in 1964, the Beatles` "A Hard Day`s Night" was th top album and "I Feel Fine" the top single, so they held both top spots for five consecutive weeks. In the two weeks before "I Want To Hold Your Hand/With The Beatles" topped the charts for five weeks, the Beatles were also at number one in both charts, with - in the week ending 28 November 1963 - "She Loves You" and "Please Please Me", and the following week with "She Loves You" and "With The Beatles". Thus they topped both charts for seven consecutive weeks, a record. Just to add to their domination, for three weeks from 12 December 1963, they had the top two singles, the top two albums and the top two EPs in the seperate EP chart that existed at the time. Never has any other act approached this extraordinary chart domination.

In the week ending 23 July 1964, The Beatles knocked The Rolling Stones off the top of both charts, the only time that one act has ever dethroned another act in the same week at the top of both charts!

Tim,

I have this info from "The Guinness Book Of British Hit Albums" (1995), they used the Melody Maker chart for LPs from 1958 to 1960, and the NME chart for singles from 1952 to 1960. From 1960 onwards, the Record Retailer chart is used.
