Default \'American Pie,\' \'Eleanor Rigby,\' \'Don\'t Be Cruel\' Among New Grammy Hall Of Famers

(2/15/02, 1 p.m. ET) -- Don McLean's "American Pie," the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," and Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel" are among the new tunes named for induction into the Grammy Hall Of Fame this year. The Recording Academy announced a total of 55 recordings that will be inducted into the 2002 Grammy Hall Of Fame, which was established in 1973 to "honor recordings of enduring quality and relevance or historical significance."


A recording (an individual song or album) must be at least 25 years old to qualify for the Hall Of Fame, and entries are selected by a panel of music professionals, including musicologists and historians. The oldest addition to this year's Hall Of Fame is 1928's recording of "Sonny Boy" by Al Jolson. Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder will each have an album and a song inducted as well.

The full list of this year's song inductees includes: "Ain't It A Shame" by Fats Domino, "Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie, "American Pie" by Don McLean, "The Battle Of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton, "Billie's Bounce" by Charlie Parker & his Re-Boppers, "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf, "Crying" by Roy Orbison, "Do You Believe In Magic" by the Lovin' Spoonful, "Don't Be Cruel" by Elvis Presley, "Duke Of Earl" by Gene Chandler, "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles, "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66" by the King Cole Trio, "Goodnight Irene" by Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter, "The Great Pretender" by the Platters, "How High The Moon" by Ella Fitzgerald, "Jambalaya (On The Bayou)" by Hank Williams, "Lucille" by Little Richard, "Me And Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin, "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" by Marvin Gaye, "Misty" by Johnny Mathis, "Mr. Sandman" by the Chordettes, "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan, "Oye Como Va" by Tito Puente, "Respect Yourself" by the Staple Singers, "Runaround Sue" by Dion, "Runaway" by Del Shannon, "Shotgun" by Junior Walker & the All-Stars, "Sincerely" by the Moonglows, "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)" by Janis Ian, "Sonny Boy" by Al Jolson, "Spanish Harlem" by Ben E. King, "Swinging On A Star" by Bing Crosby, "The Tears Of A Clown" by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" by Sons Of The Pioneers, "Walking The Dog" by Rufus Thomas, "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" by Sammy Davis Jr., "When You Wish Upon A Star" by Cliff Edwards, "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" by Pete Seeger, "Woodchopper's Ball" by Woody Herman & his Orchestra, "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Stevie Wonder, and "You've Got A Friend" by Carole King.

This year's list of album inductees for the Grammy Hall Of Fame includes: Blood Sweat & Tears by Blood Sweat & Tears, The Doors by the Doors, Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan, Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson, Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder, Sweet Baby James by James Taylor, Hello, Dolly! An Original Cast Recording, Midnight Special by Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter with the Golden Gate Quartet, Pinocchio (motion picture soundtrack), and Porgy And Bess by Alexander Smallens conducting Lawrence Tibbett, Helen Jepson, and the Original Orchestra & Chorus.

Eleanor Rigby is my second favourite! (it was first untill I discovered A Day In The Life, sorry.. eheh)

You're welcome! Hum, I wonder how many other Beatle songs made it into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The article didn't say that the songs had to have won a Grammy, but the Beatles didn't win as many Grammys as they deserve. Of course, I'm a bit biased about that....
