The layout of this bottle is awesome; I'd buy it instantly, not only for the ice-cream

Okay, I think I have just discovered what I would like my dance teacher to put together for my students for our annual Evening for the Arts...

This took place at a school in New York City in 2009:

Join 200 children of NDIís Advanced Team for a joyous celebration in dance and music of the legendary John Lennon. This theatrical event weaves together vignettes of Lennonís life with original, energetic choreography set to his masterful music. The young dancers, ages 9-15 present a moving portrait of Lennonís enduring legacy, accompanied by the NDI Orchestra.

^ OMG!!!

Well, I choreographed several talent shows and art shows for my friend's school program and, two years ago, the students were able to show off their basketball dribbling, karaoke, and modern dance skills to whatever songs they wanted.

They chose:

"Beat It" by Michael Jackson for the modern dance (hey, better than Beiber and there was no Drake allowed)

"Come Together" for the basketball dribbling

and "We Are The World," "Imagine," and "Baby" for the karaoke

(Ok, I can't fight the Beiber Fever but freaking "Imagine" was selected!!! I'm so glad some kids have parents with pure minds like that...)

And that's OK.

28 (?) ~ Even in remote Bhutan, a tiny country that only recently got television and the internet, the power of the Beatles (and of John, in particular) is felt!

I'm a huge fan of Michael Palin's travel docs... here is Part 6 of his Himalaya series. Start at about 23:40 or so for the background and then keep watching for about 30 seconds... you won't miss it!

Default (SPOILERS ALERT)

29. When I was 14, Mr. Holland's Opus came out and my dad took me to see it. The one thing I remember most about that film was the unabashed love the people who made the movie had for John Lennon and the Lennon family in general.

The premise of the film is this extraordinary music teacher who is teaching kids about music in, I believe, the late 50's. He is open to every genre, so of course rock 'n' roll plays a huge part- to the chagrin of the very conventional school administration.

Anyway, so in the midst of this, the teacher, Mr. Holland, has a son with his wife. He's happy- until he find out his son is deaf. From that moment on, he struggles as a parent. Not because he doesn't love his child, but because he finds it hard to communicate with him when he can not share his biggest love, music, with his boy. They have a sort of 'colder' relationship for a while- until his son says to him 'you care more about teaching your students than you do about me.'

The soundtrack of the film contains "Imagine," "Beautiful Boy" and the theme song, "Cole's Song," written and performed by Julian Lennon. To me, that song was written for Julian's dad and it's about their relationship- which is slightly similar to that of the teacher and his own son, until he sees the light.

The most touching and beautiful moment in the movie is towards the end. John Lennon's death has just passed, and Mr. Holland is deeply saddened, angry, hurt. He walks home and meets his son, who asks him what is wrong. Mr. Holland tells him, but since the boy can not speak back quickly, he says, "You wouldn't understand."

And then his son, Cole, storms after him and tells him, "What makes you think I don't know who John Lennon is?" (in sign language of course)

So there's more after that, but I was building it up to the best part: when Mr. Holland sings "Beautiful Boy" and dedicates it to Cole. Tissues abound.

Here is that part for all to see, about 1:30:

(If you want to hear "Cole Song" please go to my recent post in the Julian Lennon's Music thread. It's a beautiful song and NO ONE has commented.)

30. A tribute in stickers:

Okay, so you know those little "drop in a quarter and turn the knob" machines that sell crap to kids and are found near the entrances to markets and drug stores and such? Today I walked into Rite Aid and this display caught my eye:

Just goes to show how iconic John is... even today.

BTW ~ who's the guy next to Jimi Hendrix supposed to be?

Hmmm... that's a pretty good guess. I'll go with Bruce Lee... BTW, Is it just me or does it look like Bob Marley has a spliff in his teeth that's being covered up by Elvis's shoulder?

I was feeling bad for Bob because of how nearly half of his left cheek was dominated by Elvis's shoulder, but maybe it was for aesthetic purposes?

Default Simon Cowell, 2/13/2012

Well, I found a quote of Simon Cowell's reaction to Whitney's death. And obviously it resonates here because:

Quote:
"There's always moments in your life which are horrible things to remember. The day John Lennon died, or Elvis Presley, and recently Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse. And now Whitney."
