Let it bequest - Jackson wants to leave Paul McCartney Beatles back catalogue

EXCLUSIVE by Zoe Griffin
The Daily Mirror

Saturday, January 3, 2009

http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/lates...5875-21013162/

MICHAEL Jackson hopes to bury his 24-year feud with Sir Paul McCartney – by leaving his share of the Beatles back catalogue to him in his will.

Macca was furious when Jacko outbid him in 1985 to win ownership of the £350million publishing rights to the whole Lennon-McCartney songbook.

The stars, once good pals who collaborated on early 80s hits The Girl is Mine and Say, Say, Say have not spoken since.

But the debt-ridden King of Pop, now said to be battling a serious genetic lung disease, is determined to make peace with McCartney.

Jackson, 50, who according to some reports is convinced he is dying and has been using a wheelchair, has drawn up a new will where Sir Paul, 66, will inherit control of his share of the Beatles songbook if the troubled star dies before him.

Sources close to Jacko say he has always regretted falling out with Macca. One insider said: “Michael is worried about his health so decided it was time to look at his finances.

“Most of his estate has been divided up between his three children. But Michael told his lawyers he was sad he no longer talks to Sir Paul and said he wanted to make things right.”

The source added: “Michael is suffering serious back and leg pain and has for a few years. He gets spasms in his back which means he spends a lot of time in bed and a wheelchair.

“He weighs just over seven stone and is very frail. He’s also had a nasty bout of emphysema and there have been reports he has another lung disease.”

Jacko sold half of his Beatles back catalogue rights to Sony in 1995, but still makes about £40million a year from them.

Macca said recently: “The annoying thing is I have to pay to play some of my own songs. Each time I want to sing Hey Jude I have to pay.”

Last night a source close to Sir Paul said: “If Michael Jackson was to give back the song rights in his will then Macca would be delighted.”

Michael Jackson’s spokesman has officially denied the star believes he is dying.

Even if it is true (the part about him leaving him the songs in the will), I don't think Paul will live longer than MJ. I don't think MJ is dying (but who knows!). I wonder if Paul passed away before Michael if the songs could go to one of the McCartney children? It would be great to have the songs back in the family.

If he wants to do the right thing, why doesn't he let Paul (and Yoko) buy the songs now?

I agree, it seems a little rediculous. If he wants to win his friendship back..give the songs back. It seems bizarre in the first place that he should/would buy them. Apart from the money, why own songs you haven't written/aren't going to play??

It is all about the money. Ironically, Paul was the one who suggested that Michael invest in songs. Paul owns the Buddy Holly catalog, and I think he owns others as well.

Paul owns the rights to all sorts of songs. He owns a lot of musicals such as Annie and Guys and Dolls. I once read a list of the songs he owns the rights to and was totally blown away!

So how does Michael have financial problems and considered almost broke, when he makes about 40 million pounds a year?? (Sorry but I don't have a "pound" sign on my keyboard, only a $$.)

Oh and for those two songs, The Girl is Mine and Say Say Say, they should be paying us. I do love Macca songs, but sorry folks those two were just crap!!!
The scary part is where Michael says he's a lover not a fighter. EWWWW!!!!

If michael really wants to make it right he should just sell his shares to Paul now.
everybody wins.

In all fairness, based on the common accounts of song contribution, this is how things should break down between Lenono (Yoko/John interests) and MPL (Paul interests). After all this time, while the credits remain the same out of respect for past history, the copyrights should be divided according to who solely wrote or had a stronger hand in writing the songs if one wishes to be totally fair. Probably won't happen, but here's how it would look if it did.

Wow, that just proves how many great songs they have written..Isn't cool how we can just look at the title of each song and play it in our heads :P

Paul would freak at those lennono 60/40's...He claims to have co-written Johns part in A day in the life and LSD and had a big hand in NWood. He claims to have written flyings melody alone and the other just added their bits to it. Help,From me to you, she loves you and IWTHYH he cliams they wrote together, totally 50/50 and you just know he's dying to emphasie how much more he contributed to them than John. BYARM is two songs put together like ADTL as is IGAF the bulk of which is entirely Pauls song with just a bit of Johns added on the end. Not only does Paul claim he wrote IGY but also claims John wouldn't have written Imagine if Paul hadn't come up with the 'Imagine i'm in love with you' line in IGY, that's how petty and sad he's become about it all...and as for IML...Phew!! He claims to have written ALL the meldody which is a real stinger for Johns reputation!!

Its so stupid that MJ was even allowed to buy the rights in the first place! The music belongs to the Beatles, they were the genuises that created all those amazing songs... and Paul shouldn't have to pay money to share HIS music with the world.

I hadn't thought about what would happen to the Beatles' catalogue until Keith Olberman brought it up on MSNBC (aaaaand incorrectly said that Paul and MJ sang together on "Ebony and Ivory"....seriously... I should be hired as a Beatles fact checker...it's obvious that these people are in need of my services), but it does beg the question....what will happen. Olberman mentioned this report, and I had remembered seeing this thread on the links earlier this year.

I mean no disrespect to Michael's memory by bringing this up, but I do think it would be wonderful if somehow the incredible Lennon/McCartney catalogue could find its way back where it belongs.

With Michael Jackson gone, what happens to the Beatles catalog now?
June 25, 4:46 PM

Certainly, one of the questions that will be floated in the wake of Michael Jackson's death is what will happen to the Beatles catalog.
In an incident that raised the ire of Beatles fans all over the world, Jackson in 1984 managed to buy the Beatles catalog in spite of efforts of others, including Paul McCartney, to buy it. He then gained the rights to most of the Beatles catalog.
In years since, because of financial troubles, Jackson has lost full ownership of the catalog.
In January, Spinner.com had reported a UK Daily Mirror tabloid report that Michael Jackson had reportedly left the Beatles catalog to Paul McCartney in his will. Of course, like most tabloid headlines, this story is as solid as sawdust.
In actuality, probably nothing may happen, since the catalog is not solely owned by Jackson anymore, but was the property of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, of which he only owned 50 per cent interest.
But even if Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono or any of the Beatles brain trust is able to get the catalog back under their control, this Jackson maneuver will never be forgotten.
The Recording Academy issued this statement about Michael Jackson:
Recording Academy Statement
Michael Jackson
June 25, 2009
"Rarely has the world received a gift with the magnitude of artistry, talent, and vision as Michael Jackson. He was a true musical icon whose identifiable voice, innovative dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and sheer star power carried him from childhood to worldwide acclaim. A 13-time GRAMMY recipient, Michael’s career transcends musical and cultural genres and his contributions will always keep him in our hearts and memories. We are deeply saddened by this tragic news and our hearts go out to his family and to music lovers around the globe who mourn this great loss."

Am I the only one who never really cared that MJ owned the catalog? It's not like Paul or Yoko were ever hurting for cash. It probably wasn't the nicest thing to do to a peer but business is business.
