Default Should \"A Hard Day\'s Night\" be colorized?

This may have been posted as a discussion a while ago but I was having this conversation with a local Beatle friend: Should "A Hard Day's Night" be colorized?
I get reactions like "Sure what the heck!" to "How dare you even suggest it!"
SO what's YOUR thoughts and why?
Now right off the bat here let me make it clear that there is (to my knowledge) NO PLAN to actually DO this. I'm just sparking for discussions sake...ready, steady, GO!

No

It would destroy the original character of the film. Plus you don't mess with art. It would be like rereleasing Sgt Pepper with a saxaphone dubbed in.

No way! I couldn't imagine watching it in color, it's a classic just the way it is.

Nope. It would loose its essence. Heck, even Laurel&Hardy aren't very funny when you see them in color

In "Making Of A Hard Day's Night" they show some pics of the film colorized, and definitely it wouldn't be the same. It's like someone suddenly wanted to do the same with the cover of "With The Beatles"!!

You mean like the "original 5th Beatle" Clarence? If anyone else remembers Eddie Murphy on SNL doing a skit where he claimed to be the 5th Beatle...he played sax. I agree that it's just fine in B&W and that adding color would make it feel a different way.

Of course not! If A Hard Days Night was colorized it wouldn't look right!

I mean imagine if the whole movie Wizard Of Oz was colorized from front to back! It wouldn't be the same either.

I think such technocolor they put in original black n white films looks so fake anyway. It makes me think of those certain halmart greeting cards.

Oh my God, such blasphemy!

There was a movement in the 80s or so to colorize a lot of classic black and white movies -- and all I can say is that it was a dreadful idea. (I think, if I remember correctly, that Ted Turner was one of the people behind it -- what WAS he thinking?!?) I saw a few colorized versions of films -- "The Maltese Falcon" and "It's a Wonderful Life" spring immediately to mind, and I also remember that I didn't like them AT ALL.

Frankly, I think that colorizing ANY black and white film tampers with the director's vision, and usually ends up being detrimental to the film in the long run. And the mere idea of seeing AHDN in color is...uggh.

One of the things I remember reading in more than one place was that one of the reasons John didn't like "Help!" as much as AHDN was BECAUSE it was in color...it was, I guess, less "artsy" to him. I somehow don't think he'd like the idea of colorizing it very much either!

Add to that - since it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Leave it as it is, this excellent 1964 black and
white classic!

They colorized "Miracle on 34th Street" as well--I remember seeing it on tv a number of times in the late 80s. And, yes, Ted Turner was one of the people who was into the whole colorizing thing. I think he owned the rights to a lot of those old movies and could do as he wished with them. (I remember Jim Carrey doing a skit about that on In Living Color years back.)

I'm obviously in the minority when I say that it'd be interesting to see A Hard Day's Night in color. But the movie could never really be anything other than black and white, that's part of the timelessness.

Nevertheless, I still think it'd be interesting in color.

I agree it might be interesting to see once in color, like if they were just playing it at a theater or something, just for the heck of it. But if they were considering re-releasing it as a brand new DVD in color or something, I don't think I'd go for it. I still think originals are always the best.

i think they should release a dvd where you have the choice to see it in both colour and black and white.
