Default 2005 R&R HOF Inductees Worst Ever

The 2005 inductees to the R&R HOF has been announced and I this has to be the weakest class of inductees ever.
I totally agree with the Pretenders being elected.
I am not a big fan of U2. They had a few big hits early in their career but, their work since then has not been R&R HOF worthy.
Percy Sledge and The O'Jays had a bunch of hits, but I can think of people more worthy to be inducted.....like Wings, Gram Parsons or even Pat Benatar.
What were they thinking when they inducted Buddy Guy? How many people ever even heard of him? Can anyone name a hit that he has had? or even any one famous that he has played with?
The non-performers inducted this year is like 'who are these guys?'. They let in these duds and forgot about Brian!
It looks like the R&R HOF is starting to run out of worthy nominees and they are inducting 'bottom of the barrel' acts to be politically correct. Maybe they should not induct any new acts for say five years or so. Don't be surprised if next year 'Grandmaster Flash' or 'The Sugarhill Gang' is inducted.

I'm not a big fan of theirs either, but I totally disagree with this assessment. They've been one of the biggest and most popular bands in the last 20 years, so if anybody deserves the "honor", I think they do.

Whether or not it actually IS an honor, well, that's another debate.

Oh, and being from Chicago, yeah, I know who Buddy Guy is.

I knew the name Buddy Guy too...but I would have to agree that when I read this year's list I was kinda like "blah." And yes, Brian's induction is wayyy overdue.

U2 should definitely be in there, that's not even up for debate in my opinion. And a big fat maybe to the Pretenders. Other than that, this year really really blows. How could they possibly leave out Van Halen? They fit in every way - it's pure rock, they influenced tons of other musicians, they were huge like two different times, and they're still kicking.

They need to change the name anyway, rock 'n roll apparently doesn't mean anything to them anymore. Sooner or later, they'll start putting in rap acts, and that'll be the end of that.

The Sugarhill Gang is great !!! What a Rapper's Delight

Actually I wrote and taped a Dutch personal rap version on that melody the B side of the single was instrumental..

O'Jays are great too !!!

You know! .....now that the shock of seeing the 2005 inductees has worn off, U2 did have some songs that I like. '(Pride)In The Name Of Love', 'Sunday,Bloody,Sunday', 'Where The Streets Have No Name', 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For'. I guess that I like the younger version when they played with passion and still had 'the eye of the tiger'.
I mentioned the Sugar Hill Gang because I was trying to think of some of the first (c)rappers. They will be remembered in history because they did make the first (c)rap record in 1975. I saw the video for 'Rappers Delight' on VH1Classic last year. I thought that it was much better than what (c)rap has evolved into.

Of this year's nominees, U2 is clearly the best band. Their work has been inspirational for many bands and their approach to pop music is unquestionable in my humble opinion. They just have to be there.

U2's early stuff was brilliant but they lost their way in the 1990's with Zooropa and Pop.
Their new album is back to the sound of old!

I do think U2 deserves to be in there. I'm not really familiar with anyone else in that group though. Does anyone else think that they may be running out of people? And that they're overlooking some very worthy people?

Sometimes I wonder what the heck criteria they use to choose the inductees. Remember...this is a rock and roll hall of fame. Artists like Big Joe Turner,Jimmy Reed, Etta James and Ruth Brown should not be in the 'artists' hof, they should be in the 'early influences' hof. Can anyone name one hit that this group had? I can't and I have been listening to rock and roll before Elvis. Is there a Blues hall of fame or Rhythm and Blues hall of fame? That is where these people belong. I also don't think that artists such as Parliment-Funkadelic,Dusty Springfield and The Staple Singers have any business in the Rockhall or any hall for that matter. And since when is the Jackson Five rock and roll? None of my local rock stations ever played their songs.
There are too many duds in the R&R HOF as it is. I still can't figure out how the Ramones got in. They should change their voting to be similar with Major League Baseball where you would need to be on 75% of the ballots to be inducted. Has the R&R HOF ever revealed what the vote counts were?
This is not what I thought the R&R HOF would turn into. Who's next?.... Tiny Tim, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Milli Vanilli or even worse Bratney Spears.....

OK, I have a lot to comment on here.

First off, U2 deserves to be in the Rock Hall, period. This is the first year they are able to be inducted, and it is fitting that they are put in.

Second off, people have been complaining about rap. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of rap, but you can't say people are unworthy of being inducted just because you don't like their particular genre of music. You cannot deny the impact that rap has had on rock n roll as it currently stands, and that is always something worth considering. In my opinion, the cleverness of artists like Eminem can't be denied (altho he has a good long while before he will even be eligible).

I know we all love the Beatles, believe me; I truly do think they were the best rock n roll band ever. But we can't just go off on everyone they induct, just because we don't like them. I personally HATE punk rock, but there are quite a few punk rock bands inducted, and rightfully so, because many people have been very influenced by them.

One last note.... I saw that someone said Van Halen should be inducted by now. I agree; they are good. But I don't know much about their history, and just wanted to point out to everyone that requirement number 1 in the list of requirements is that it has to have been 25 years ago that that artist's first record was released.

OK, enough of my ranting for now.

This year's inductees aren't as good as they could have been. But most of all I'm upset that The Sex Pistols STILL haven't gotten in. I mean, what does it take??? The Ramones are in already! And Marc Bolan needs to be in there, too. The Hall is too skewed towards the American rock experience. Where are all the glam blockbusters? Bowie just isn't enough.

i think they have put up some poor choices often anf=d fans dont really get much say i think if there is not a good bunch to pick from choose less or go back because so many have as yet to be included and are so deserving they do still plan by the way to do a george show come spring too bad they wait for people to no longer be around to honor them

I do agree with you about the Rock Hall's nasty habit of waiting too late to induct some people. Did anyone notice that Paul McCartney got inducted the year after Linda died, and then the obvious one that George didn't get inducted until after he had passed on. Come on, Rock Hall. They are awesome, and don't need your "pity induction". I always thought that was very fishy. I remember having mixed emotions about Paul being inducted, simply because I felt like they were doing it out of pity for him.... why else did they wait until 1999 to do it? Sketchy....

I'm extremely surprised that people don't know who Buddy Guy is?!

He is a brilliant bluesman. He was also a great influence on those guitarists we keep dear like Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton (Who was quoted in saying Buddy is "The greatest guitarist in the world!"). He has many prestigious awards under his belt, including the Century Award. I suggest folks check him out. Songs like "Stone Crazy," "Let Me Love You Baby," and "Keep It to Myself."

And the question is, who hasn't he played with? He's played with John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc., etc. And do you think Jimi was the first to play guitar with his teeth? Think again.

And in my opinion, he deserves to be there the most out of that whole list. "Damn Right" Buddy deserves some respect!
