Smile The U.S. Military

Hi Beatlemaniacs,
I am wondering whether any of you have served in the U.S. military. If so, what branch were you in? What was your experience like? Would you recommend it to others? If there's anything else you'd like to share about your time in the military, please post!
Thanks!!!

I wasn't in the military, but I enrolled in the Air Force ROTC. It was kind of fun to wear a uniform every week.

I'm not in the military myself, but many people in my family are. In fact, my parents first met in Hawaii where they were both Lieutenants! My aunt was also in the Navy and my grandpa was in the Air Force. Right now my brother's also in the Air Force.

I served in the USAF after high school. My career field was slowly being phased out, so that was one factor in my decision to get out. Another was I had alot of trouble fitting in at Sheppard. An assignment to a base in the US has no fixed rotation date. So I could have stayed there conceivably up to ten years.

Like in the movie "Goodmorning Vietnam" my chief source of irritation was given an assignment to a remote location about the same time I was leaving. I found out later on that he retired in leu of that assignment.

I don't want to say that my entire time in the service was a bust. before Sheppard I was assigned to Upper Heyford, an RAF base. My time in England was much more productive and more enjoyable. I have been to England several times, each time I go there something good always happens, so I can't complain.

My dad was in the Air Force for 20 years. So we moved a lot. When people ask me where I'm from, I just say everywhere.

One of my brothers did 4 years in the Navy, in discussing it with him, he told me the following. PLEASE remember this is HIS experience, not mine.
First, the things that he did like. He joined up in the 1980's, in order to serve his country. He felt good that he was able to give his country 4 years. He also got to travel the world, which he probably would not have been able to do otherwise. He met a lot of people that have remained friends.
The bad, and he would not recommend service to most people, just FYI. His main things were that first, the US constitution is basically suspended while you are in the service. All illegal activities or the suspicion of such is handled much differently than in civilian life. Plus you are just not as "free" to say things, or do things. Depending on your situation, much of your existence is very controlled. Also he said that every jerk you ever knew, or someone just like them, are there and they tend to be the ones in charge. That there are a lot of folks that are cruel just because they CAN be.
Now, do remember, his experience was about 25 years ago, I have no idea if it is at all similar to today.
Hope this helps.

Cool

My Dad was USAF during WWII, he loved being stationed in the South Pacific, we heard lots about the islands but as most WWII vets were, he didn't talk about what went on, other than the beauty...

My Dad was there, too. Except he was Navy and on a destroyer in the Pacific. There's funny piccies of him and his buddies on leave somewhere in 1940's Hawaii and Alaska, too! I'll bet my sister Diane has them, the wench!

My dad was in the Navy on a destroyer too. This was during the Korean war. His ship was about a week away from being sent to Korea when it was rammed by another during night training exercises. Since they needed repairs, another destroyer was sent to Korea in their place. My dad ended up spending the Korean War touring Europe instead.
