When the World Stopped to Listen
"I declare that the Beatles are mutants, prototypes of evolutionary agents sent by God, endowed with a mysterious power to create a new human species."--Dr. Timothy Leary

Rolling Stone recently announced its top 500 pop music albums of all time. Perched at the top of the heap is the Beatles' legendary Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Unleashed on the world 45 years ago on June 1, 1967, Sgt. Pepper's, as Rolling Stone heralds, "is the most important rock & roll album ever made, an unsurpassed adventure in concept, sound, sanguinity, cover art and studio technology by the greatest rock & roll group of all time."

I have always been bored at best by the ramblings of George Martin but I have to admit I agree with him when he said they made a big mistake by not putting Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane on the Pepper album.

You only had about 18 minutes per side on a vinyl record. What would you have taken off to make room?

The European records back in the 1960's used a better quality of vinyl and they could get 25 minutes per side.
But here in the good 'ole USA they used cheap vinyl and could barely get much more that 15-18 minutes per side.
That is why Capitol released the Beatles albums in the early days with only 11 songs instead if the 14 Lennon and Gang recorded for an album.
But anyway.
I would not drop any song from the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
I would add Strawberry Fields Forever as the last song on side one.
And I keep changing my mind about Penny Lane, I would put it second on side two or maybe third.

I'm a second generation fan. Meaning that I discovered them as a kid in the 70's. Everyone knew that Sgt Pepper changed the world and music wasn't the same. But when you watch this video of Dick Clark getting kids reactions, it's not what you would expect. Seems it divided their fans. People just really didn't know how to take it.

I remember seeing that Dick Clark show episode.
It early 1967 and I just turned 13 years old that January.
I was speechless when I saw it, numb, but in a good way.

Sgt Pepper is an icon, an institution. While I see the logic in both arguments, I personally would not add or change a thing on Sgt Pepper.

I love the videos for the songs.

As for Dr. Timothy Leary, he was definitely many hounds short of a pack and definitely 6 cans shy of a 6-pack!
