Yoko Being Honoured
JOHN Lennon's widow Yoko Ono is to get an honorary degree from Liverpool University this summer.
She will be in the city to receive her award at the Philharmonic Hall on July 2.
The degree is being given in recognition of her artistic work and also for her patronage of the John Lennon Memorial Scholarships which she set up in 1991 as a trust fund to enable students to continue with their studies.
Ms Ono, 68, still lives in the New York apartment near where Lennon was shot dead 20 years ago.
In December, his killer Mark David Chapman saw his bid for freedom turned down.
Speaking exclusively to the ECHO, Ms Ono said: "It is an honour. I am very excited."
Others due to receive an award include Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, President of the Family Division at the Royal Courts of Justice, and the judge who decided that the identities of the killers of James Bulger should remain a secret.
Other due to receive honorary degrees include John Hargreaves, the Liverpool-born docker's son who founded discount store Matalan and BBC presenter Roger Phillips.
A spokesman for the university added: "The university awards honorary degrees for a variety of reasons.
"The background for each honorary degree is described in the oration which the public orator delivers at the degree congregation, which is also attended by students receiving conventional degrees, their families and relatives."
The full list of recipients is: Yoko Ono; Prof David King, the Governments Chief Scientific Adviser; Prof John Horton Conway, Liverpool born professor from Princeton University; Prof Albert Crewe, Liverpool University graduate now working at Chicago University; Sir Iain Chalmers, Director of the UK Cochrane Centre; John Hargreaves, Chairman of Matalan; Prof Susan Greenfield, Professor of Pharmacology; Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, President of the Family Division; Roger Phillips, BBC Radio Merseyside.

degree in what? primal screaming? sorry folks, but it appears that if you give enough money to anyone, and they'll give you a degree in something.

Re: Yoko Being Honoured
I think it's great that she has a scholarship fund in John's name. Yoko does a lot to keep John's memory alive. If it wasn't for her we wouldn't have the John Lennon Anthology, the musuem, Strawberry Fields, NYC.
