yes it is. He was known as Keoki on Hawaii. There are a few stories about that here somewhere.

here's one

"Travis Harrelson, Pat Boone, Arthur Godfrey, Tiny Tim, George Harrison...the uke's always "fun." Here's what Beatle Harrison wrote in Beloff's book 60s Uke-In on February 2, 1999: "Everybody should have and play a 'UKE' its so simple to carry with you and it is one instrument you can't play and not laugh! It is so sweet and also very old.... I love them--the more the merrier.... get yourself a few and enjoy yourselves--Love from George (Keoki) Harrison."

`Buddhas abound throughout the estate, one carved of fragrant camphorwood, another—a small, precious ivory Buddha in the palm of a hand—was a gift from the neighbor and friend Chang called “Keoki”: George Harrison.

and one more

his estate, keeping a low profile and never performing in public, as far as anyone can recall, during the 20 years he counted himself as a part-time resident.

George Harrison, 58, who died of cancer Thursday in Los Angeles, escaped suffocating celebrity by coming to Maui and embracing the local community in Nahiku.

"He gravitated toward the people of the earth. He had a fondness for them,'' said Michael Spalding, who represented Harrison in his real estate and financial dealings when he first purchased his 63-acre East Maui property in 1981. He would later buy more than 100 additional acres there.

"When he came to Maui, he didn't seek out the mighty, the rich and the powerful. He sought out the Hawaiians. He was very loyal to the people he befriended, and they were very loyal to him,'' Spalding said.

Nahiku residents, such as Arnold Allencastre, knew Harrison simply as Keoki.

"He was a good guy, a nice guy,'' said Allencastre, whose father once owned the land Harrison had acquired. "He liked the local people, too.''

Harrison hired Allencastre, a heavy-equipment operator, to help clear his land so he could build his house and plant his gardens. But their relationship wasn't just a working one. Allencastre and his wife, Cynthia, would socialize with the Harrisons. George and his wife, Olivia, would come to their parties and they, in turn, would be invited to an occasional lunch.

The last time Allencastre saw Harrison was about a year ago when he and Olivia stopped by to say hello and catch up on what was happening in town.

Former caretaker Dot Pua remembers Harrison as a sweet and thoughtful boss. One time, when she was cutting his hair, Harrison asked about her favorite songs. Her reply was, " 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' by Kenny Rankin," and a couple other tunes. Harrison didn't say anything.

It was only years later, while leafing through a Beatles songbook, that she discovered that "While My Guitar Gently Weeps'' was written by Harrison.

"My goodness, he must have thought I was so dumb,'' she said.

Pua, now a beautician at the Hotel-Hana Maui, said her time at the Harrison estate was a wonderful experience.

"But it made me appreciate my simple life,'' she said. "When I was hired, Olivia told me my life will change — and it did. We got a dog and locked the doors, something we never did before. Strangers kept coming onto the property.''

Strangers were something Harrison worked hard to avoid and that aversion exploded into a lawsuit with neighbors who were allowing visitors to use a path over his property to get to the ocean. The lawsuit was finally settled this year.

"He used to tell me that he wanted to be famous, but after three or four months it was the worst thing that happened to him,'' said restaurateur Bob Longhi, who was introduced to the former Beatle in 1977 and continued as a friend.

"George was a super guy, a humble-type person. He wasn't like, 'I'm George Harrison.' He was fun-loving.''

Harrison fell in love with Maui, Longhi said, and in 1979 wrote "Soft-Hearted Hana,'' dedicating it to Longhi on his "George Harrison'' album.

Paul Weinstein, owner of Bounty Music in Kahului, remembers the former Beatle coming into his shop anywhere from six to a dozen times over the years.

He said Harrison was fascinated with the 'ukulele and bought perhaps as many as a dozen over the years.

During one visit, Weinstein allowed him to try out various instruments in an office behind the Hana Highway store.

"It was one of the thrills of my life,'' he said. "Whoever thought I'd be able to sit in a room, just me and him, and be able to hear him try out some instruments.''

Maui guitarist Harry Troupe, a former Bounty Music manager, said he was stunned to find Harrison in the shop one day.

"He was so humble to me,'' he said. "It really floored me to see a guy of that stature treat me the way he did. You could just feel the warmth from him.''

On the thenewno2 album in the liner notes they also mention Keoki and I believe Dhani has tatoo on his left arm with it.

Ravi Shankar:

"It's a deep and strong friendship that I have with George. Sometimes I am like a father to him and sometimes he takes that role with me, while at the same time we are teacher and student, and along with that, close friends.

He puts me in a bubbly mood and provokes me into being funny an punny, by which I can justify my title of "Pun-dit" to him.

He is so loving and magnanimous, going out of his way to help those he cares for. He also has something of a child in him, and likes to joke and pun too - he has that glint in his eyes, like a naughty boy.

He also has his black moods, as we all do - and God help anyone who at that time incites his wrath! He can be very hard, but he's frank like that: he doesn't hide his feelings. He can also completely shut himself off, and be quite indifferent and distristful. Of course this is understandable, because he has been exploited so much by people he trusted. It is a wonder that he is not like that all the time, that he still can have such feelings for others.

He has been good to me. It is wonderful to have his regard, respect and love, as I too feel such deep love for him in my heart"

I love that story about George when Lou flew to NY to nurse him back to health when the Beatles first came to America.

Smile Two anecdotes from Louise H.

From English beat, Beatle treat: Harrison's sister lends credence to Liverpool Legends, an article by Bob Kostanczuk [Post Tribune]:

Silver tea

Louise Harrison has this vivid memory of her late brother, George -- the "Quiet Beatle."

It stems from a birthday party, "back when we were kids."

Her mum was pouring from a teapot.

"George looks, and he says, 'Oh wow, silver tea!' " Harrison recalled in a recent phone interview.

George -- who was probably around 6 or 7 years old at the time -- wasn't actually witnessing something wondrous.

"It was just plain water coming out," said Harrison, noting that her mother simply forgot to add tea leaves.

Harrison and her famous sibling had fondly recounted the humorous episode at a time when the end was approaching for George, who died in 2001 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

'Harrison Hug' keeps affection circulating

George Harrison gave his sister a memorable embrace.

"One of the last times I saw him, he said to me, 'Pass it on,' " Louise Harrison recalled.

"So after he died, I thought, 'That's a good idea; I'll pass on his hug.' "

The goal, she said, is to "keep his love circulating around the world."

As Louise tells it, the concept seems to be working: "This one person e-mailed me from Argentina, and she said that she got a Harrison Hug for her birthday, and it had come from somebody that I had given the hug to in Cleveland in 2005."

These displays of affection are ideal for the tough economic times.

"They're free," George's sibling said.

Love does make the world go 'round.

What a wonderful, heartwarming story! This is a bonus Christmas treat!

That "silver tea" story is adorable. I love stories like this about Lil George and his siblings.

Just like the Beatles said, "All You Need is Love."

George Harrison admired Formby so much that he became an honorary President of the George Formby Appreciation Society. On Sunday 3 March 1991 he turned up at the annual George Formby Convention at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.

The compere announced him to the Formby fans, “After some persuasion I’d like to introduce Mr George Harrison who says he’s nervous.”

George came onto the stage and said, “I thought I’d retired from all this years ago. You’ll have to bear with me as I’m not certain I know the right chords, but you’re all welcome to join in.”

George had been buying ukuleles for years and had them in virtually every room of his house. His son Dhani became an accomplished player. George was to say, “It is hard to play a ukulele banjo without smiling.”

He loved playing the instrument and at Terry Gilliam’s party on 26 November 2000, he began playing George Formby songs on his uke, accompanied by Michael Palin and Terry Jones on spoons.

Harrison, George - George Harrison - Brainwashed - Unknown Titles

"Yeah, [there was a pretty ballad that was left off this record that George wrote with Jim Capaldi]. Capaldi is a gifted songwriter and drummer. Jim wrote a lot with Stevie Winwood in the Traffic days. We've been friends for many years, so I was happy that they hooked up. [...] Well I hope [there's more unreleased songs in the can], but I don't know for sure... I really liked the song they did but apparently George didn't feel it was quite finished yet."

Tell that story about Harold Sr. when he and George met President Ford and tell the one about George when Lou invited him to Benton, IL in 9/63. I just LOVE George stories!

Oh, and wait! Then there was the one about when George came to America with the Beatles in 1964 and please tell about Lou and George that time.

I think this oft quoted story is such a pisser. It always makes me laugh.

John Lennon came to the Harrison home as George's guest. The then 16-year-old reached out to shake hands with Louise. In so doing, they both toppled onto the couch.

Just then Harold Sr. walked in and wanted to know in quite irate terms what was going on. George, laughing told Harold Sr. that it was only John.

Apparently, the senior Harrisons were very tolerant and supportive of George's rebellious older friend and many such antics were smilingly dismissed as being "only John," and "John, it's always you."
