Good grief! I never knew this either! Kinda makes me feel sorry for Paul. I guess they all had written some hurtful songs towards him. Nevertheless, I still think it's a kick-ass song!

It's just what you choise to believe. Ringo himself told a totaly different story, and I can't believe that this nonsense that the song is about Paul, is still going around.

Mark Bolan used the term "boogaloo" a few times when he was with Ringo one day, and he often said "oh, back off". This inspired Ringo. Just check with Ringo or listen to "Story tellers".

I agree with Legs. The Marc Bolan story is so often sreaded round, also by Ringo.

Besides, why should Paul be named Boogaloo?

It's all "Devil's Radio"

From a chat I believe

- Dear Ringo,
We all know about your past and I am sure you are tired of
answering questions about the Beatles.
1. What is in store for the future fo you? (and us) Are you
planning or recording a new album?
2. How did John come up with the nickname Boogaloo for Paul?
What encouraged you to write/record Back Off Boogaloo?
See you in Atlantic City. I loved the first two tour. It is
a pity Eric Carmen declined the invitation.

Dear Phil,
Well, I don't know about it being a nickname for Paul,
Marc Bolan from T.Rex inspired me to write that song. We had
dinner one night and that's how we spoke-- it was all
"Boogaloo" and "back off." I went to bed that night and
woke up in the middle of the night with that song in my
head, and it took me ten minutes.
As for the future, we'll be on tour until the middle of
September, then we'll go on holiday. No record plans
at the moment.

Yeah Ringo mentions how he got the idea for Boogaloo on Storytellers. I keep hearing mixed responses as to whether it's directed at Paul or not...

"Sentimental Journey" was originally recorded by Les Brown and his Orchestra, with vocals by Doris Day. It was a #1 hit for nine weeks in the US and was Day's first big hit.

Ringo recorded it on his first solo album, with very little chart success.

Sentimental Journey

Bud Green, Les Brown and Ben Homer
Black Molasses Music

Gonna take a sentimental journey,
Gonna set my heart at ease.
Gonna make a sentimental journey,
To renew old memories.
I've got my bag and got my reservation,
Spent each dime I could afford,
Like a child in wild anticipation,
Long to hear that "All Aboard!"

Seven (seven),
That's the time we leave,
At seven (seven).
I'll be waiting out for heaven (heaven),
Counting every mile of railroad track
That takes me back.

Never thought my heart could be so yearning,
Why did I decide to roam?
Got to make this sentimental journey,
Sentimental journey home.

I said at seven,
That's when we leave,
At seven.
I'll be waiting out for heaven,
Counting every mile of railroad track
That takes me back.

I never thought my heart could be so yearning,
Why did I decide to roam?
Got to take this sentimental journey,
Sentimental journey home,
Sentimental journey home, let's go now.
Sentimental journey home,
Sentimental journey home,
Sentimental journey home,
Sentimental journey home.

Maybe I'd better go by plane!

Another one? How about La De Da.
One of the most joyful songs I've ever heard from a solo beatle. What a shame it never became a huge hit!!!

Not a powerful track from Vertical Man but a nice little sing-along ditty.

La De Da

Starkey/Hudson/Grakal/Dudas

Startling Music Ltd/MCA Music/Beef Puppet Music/
Irving Music (Birdie of My Life Music)/Do Dis Music

I live my life, it's only right
'Cause I can't live your life for you.
I'm satisfied, feeling high
'Cause I found out just what to do.
Oh, you can bet I never let the things I get get the best of me.
When I get blue, here's what I do and so can you,
It is no mystery when you sing.

La la de da, like que sera sera,
Whatever la de da, la de da,
All you gotta say is la de da.

You don't need to cry, (cry)
No reason why is ever good enough for me.
We can take a walk, just laugh and talk,
Whatever's going to be will be.
And when it rains I don't complain, I'm like a train, I just keep rolling on.
Sometimes you lose, you blow a fuse, you're not immune
To what's been going on, sing along.

La la de da, like que sera sera,
Whatever la de da, la de da,
All you gotta say is la de da.
Oo-oo!

And when you're down, it can be found,
Turn it around, you know the remedy.
(You always get what you always get,
You always get what you always get)

Just cut some slack, don't look back
'Cause it's a fact it will be okay when you say

La la de da, like que sera sera,
Whatever la de da, la de da,
All you gotta say is la de da.
Oh yeah
Just like Doris Day said que sera,
La la de da,
La la de da,
La la de da,
All you gotta say is la de da,
All I gotta say is,
All we gotta say is,
It's the only way is la de da.
La la de da,
La la de da,
La la de da,
Come on, ev'rybody
La la de da,
This one's for you, mate
La la de da,
It went la de da, I say
La la de da,
La la de da,
Come on, join me with this line!
La la de da,
La la de da,
La.

I think its one of the strongest from Vertical Man.Sure, the lyrics are not great but most of Ringos songs aren't lyrical masterpieces.I think it's up there with You're Sixteen as one of the most fun solo beatle songs.

OK then, What about King Of Broken Hearts?
A beautiful ballad with a cracking slide by George.Another of the Vertical Man highlights.

A nice mid-tempo ballad from the Vertical Man sessions. Though it wasn't officially released as a single, it did get some airplay. Hari Georgeson (AKA George) added a splendid slide guitar.

King Of Broken Hearts

Starkey/Hudson/Grakal/Dudas

Startling Music Ltd/MCA Music/Beef Puppet Music/
Irving Music (Birdie of My Life Music)/Do Dis Music

Can you guess what I'm thinking of
Where's someone that I can love?
I just don't know where to start,
I'm the king of broken hearts.
I was waiting for the bells to ring,
My love for her keeps lingering.
Praying that she'd wear my ring,
Waiting for the crowd to sing.

I'm the king of broken hearts,
I've lost before I ever start to love again.
I'm the king of broken hearts,
I'd give it all away to find a friend again,
Again.

Where's the dream I had before?
She just walked right out the door.
I want her back and nothing more,
Her note fell on the bedroom floor.

I'm the king of broken hearts,
I've lost before I ever start to love again.
I'm the king of broken hearts,
I'd give it all away to find a friend again.

A heart's no good when it's been broken,
Words of love are often spoken,
My tears fall like jewels from a crown.

Look how fast the tide can turn,
Some people live but never learn.
I can make a brand new start
Living in a land of broken hearts. (broken hearts)

Yeah, I'm the king of broken hearts,
I've lost before I ever start to love again.
I'm the king of broken hearts,
I'd give it all away to find a friend again.
I'm the king of broken hearts,
I'd give it all away to find a friend again,
Again.
