I know. I am a guitar freak. I often buy guitars sight-unseen, and I've had pretty good luck with it all. I love SG's, so I am not too concerned. I've read that it can get some pretty cool "Fender-ish" tones as well as its natural Gibson tones. Sounds pretty versatile.

Plus, it's limited to a production run of only 400. So, I couldn't resisit.

I don't really know whether many people have problems when buying guitars without seeing them. I suppose that, as long as they're not second-hand, there should be no problem if you have read users' reviews and know what to expect beforehand, or if you know enough about pickups and such to know more or less what sound the guitar will have.

I know there are may guitarists who wouldn't think of buying a guitar unless they've felt it in their hands and have heard it in-person.... the whole "every guitar is different" thing - which is true to an extent, and I totally appreciate that.

But, me... I am not that picky. Give me a cool-looking guitar that I have read good things about, and I am easy to please.

I'm more or less like that, although I wouldn't do so with a second-hand guitar. I'm easy to please, too. I'm even pleased when people around me buy new guitars! (Of course, not as much as I'd be if the guitar were mine, but I really enjoy people talking about their new guitars.)

By the way, I forgot to ask: I've seen that several of you have taken pics of all your guitars together by placing them on those stands with three legs. Are those stands expensive? Can they be folded so they take up less place when not in use? I asked at the only music shop in my town, but the old guy didn't have such a thing. I wouldn't like to have my guitars on those stands all the time (with family and cats all over the house I prefer to have them into their cases and bags, apart from all the dust they would gather), but if they're not too dear I might get some, even if it's only to take those cool pics!

I also forgot to show you pics of my trumpet and uke (I took them a few weeks ago). It's not new gear; the only novelty are the pics themselves.

Those guitar stands are not too expensive. I've had one for a long time, so I can't recall how much it was.

They can, indeed, be "collapsed down". Mine come in three parts: 1.) the top which has the "prongs" that hold the guitar in-place below the peg board, 2.) the main vertical pole which has two small "tubes" on either side where you insert the bottom foam-padded guitar holders and 3.) the bottom "tripod" section that has fold-in legs. Ok, so actually mine has 5 parts if you count the two bottom holders.

Of course, there are many various designs. Mine holds two guitars back-to-back. Others just hold one.

I have several of those guitar stands and they've cost me between $10 and $20, depending on size and material, so no, they're not too expensive. The smallest one I have can be collapsed so that it's small enough to fit into a very small tote bag. I've also lost several of them by leaving them at gigs.

El Gos Coix, any noteworthy stories or details about the Trumpet or Uke?

I got my new Gibson SG-3 sunburst today! I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but will be back to report on it shortly.

But, for starters... it's more light-weight than my old '91 SG Standard, and the neck is "rounder". The sunburst finish is gorgeous.

You're talking with the right person. When I started working here, ten months ago, I found out that the guy sitting at the desk next to mine had been musing upon the possibility of buying a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass for several years... In two months, and after some relentless, persuasive encouragement from me, he bought it, and he has just bought an Epiphone acoustic bass too, which he's bringing today to the office for me to see and play (since yesterday was a Holiday in Spain, many people have got today off as well -including our bosses-, so I think we'll waste some time making some music. I wonder whether this country will collapse owing to our lack of productivity today ). At least you seem to be a merciful person: from the pic of your guitars I gather you're not lefty, so it's been very kind of you not to convince your friend to buy a right-handed guitar so you could play it!

I read somewhere that the Gibson SG is a heavy guitar, is it so? If it's true, then it must be nice to have this lighter guitar, mainly to play standing for a long time. as for the roundness of the neck, is there any way to measure such a thing, apart than by the feeling when placing one's hand around it? I see the guitar's got single-coil pickups (hasn't it?), so I guess it'll sound very different from your other SG (I cannot see clearly which pickups it's got, but I can see they're not the same). And what do you think about the guitar having only one volume and one tone control knobs for all three pickups? Does your guitar have that rounded plate on the pickguard, as those guitars at eBay? What does it say? I see that the back of the guitar is black! Is that common? I thought all guitars had the top and back of the same colour until I saw certain pic of George's Duo Jet, in which a lighter back can be seen (Asha, does that also happen in your Duo Jet?)

Not really. Both instruments are of the cheapo type. When I bought the uke (made in Romania) it couldn't stay in tune for longer than a song, but I tightened the screws of the tuning pegs, and now it's all right. I'm planning to paint it Rocky-like, like Hari's Chick's (look at this), but it seems I can never find the time to do so. As for the trumpet, it's an Amati Kraslice in Bb with the usual 7C mouthpiece, and I suppose it's a piece of rubbish. I'm not really a trumpet player, but a French horn player, so I only want the trumpet to play the fool a bit (a French horn looks a bit too serious for that!), and it's good enough for that purpose. I got it really cheap at a closing-down sale.

I notice that one of those "Caven" models shown above has a "Hofner" logo printed on the body(!?). That was not true to the originals - no? I don't ever recall seeing it on either of Paul's '61 or '63 models.

When going backwards to take a look at the pic of the Gibson SG-3 I saw this comment. Certainly, Paul's bass guitars didn't have that Höfner logo on their body. I've only seen it in Cavern basses made in the nineties of afterwards, although I cannot say whether all modern Cavern basses have got it or when it started to be there.

Anyway.... I am not aware of a specific way to measure the circumfrence of a guitar's neck. All I know is that it feels wider in my left hand... rounder, if you will. I played it (unamplified) side-by-side with my older SG, and the neck is just as fast and I was able to play the same licks with the same ease on the new wider neck.

The SG is not all that heavy - not as heavy as a Les Paul. But, it's not "light" either. My new SG-3 is I'd guess about 1 lb. lighter than my '91. The body tapers-in on the top edges as well, whereas older SG's I've owned and played are "squared-off" on the edges.

Yes, this new SG-3 has got three single-coils that can be configured in 6 ways: bridge, bridge/middle, middle, middle/neck, neck, and bridge/neck(!). I am certain it will sound different from my '91 SG which has the two humbuckers. You'd think I'd have already dug-in and had at it. But, all I have is a crappy transistor amp at the moment, and I'll need to set up my Line 6 Pod and plug it into that to get a real good idea of how it sounds. I just haven't had a chance yet. I'll get back to you on how it sounds as soon as I can.

I've never had any problem with that (it must be the only thing I've never had a problem with!) I click on the multi-quote buttons (buttons!?) in each of the posts I want to quote, then on "Post Reply" and then I try to be careful and write each of my paragraphs in the right places. If it doesn't work for you, I cannot tell why.
