Paul on new version of \"Do They Know It\'s Christmas\"
By Paul Cashmere
4 November 2004
Paul McCartney has announced that he will take part in the third all star line-up of the new version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas'. McCartney will appear as a musician, not a singer, on the new record playing bass.
The group will be named Band-Aid 20 in reference to the 20th anniversary of the original recording of the song.
Band Aid 20 will feature Robbie Williams, The Darkness, Chris Martin, Noel Gallagher, Dido, Damon Albarn, Thom Yorke, Beverly Knight, Katie Melua and Beverly Knight.
The song will be recorded next week in London.
Used by permision
U2’s Bono will also take part, singing his infamous line from the 1984 recording. He is the only artist involved from the original line-up.
Coldplay’s Chris Martin is believed to be opening the song, Supergrass’ Danny Goffey is to play the drums, while Travis’ Fran Healy is to play in the guitar section.
Robbie Williams has reportedly recorded the whole track, leaving producer Nigel Godrich to chose which of the pop star’s lines he wishes to use in the song.
Williams recorded his section in LA on Monday (November 1) as he won’t be available for the live recording session in London. Dido is also believed to have done the same.
Snow Patrol and Keane have also confirmed their contribution to the charity single.
The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins, Jamelia and Sugababes will also be taking part.

Re: Paul on new version of \"Do They Know It\'s Christmas\"
When I first read this a couple days ago it said he was going to play drums and I thought that was sort of unusual, but then I heard this later that said he was playing bass. I didn't really like this song when it first came out - too heavyhanded - but I'll have to listen to the remake to hear Paul's bass playing, being a big ole' bass geek myself.

Re: Paul on new version of \"Do They Know It\'s Christmas\"
Here is some more
He told BBC Radio One he will play bass guitar on the track but would also be up for singing if asked.
"If they want me to sing on it and there's a spot for me, I'll probably do it,"

Re: Paul on new version of \"Do They Know It\'s Christmas\"
I only like the first version of the songt, back when there was a need.
Does Africa want band aid 3?
It's like when I go to Serbia, people say, "Is it save? Isn't there a war".When it is a save and a beautiful country.
So I agree trade, not aid.

Re: Paul on new version of \"Do They Know It\'s Christmas\"
I read some of the news on this over the last couple of days, I understood a couple of the participating artists, said Paul was too old to sing on the song?

Here in Italy on MTV they said that Paul will not sing because the Live Aid organisers thought he was too OLD!!!!

That puts it in a different light, and I was thinking aboutt that to. Tho it sounds a bit unfortunate to say we don't want him to sing because he's to old.
Band Aid one, had the artists who were curent at that time "Duran Duran" "U2" "George Michael" and such. Band Aid two had another generation of artists including "Kylie Minogue". So this version will have the artists of today, including Robbie and Dido. I was just wondering about Bono, and I don't think it's a good excuse to have him on because no-one else could sing his line like he does, you might have well have the rest of Band Aind 1 on the line up, because no-one else could sing their lines like they did.
I still wish however that no-one would sing on it.

Re: Paul on new version of \"Do They Know It\'s Christmas\"
If no one sings on it they might as well change the title and release it any time in the year it's an awesome rythm with the bass and drums.

You've got that right! :thumsbup2:
I'd rather hear Paul on his worst day than some of these folks on their best day. Too old? Oh, for Pete's sake!
