Advice for starting out?

I've wanted to play guitar and bass for probably over a decade now but I've always been too nervous to tell people for some reason. Well, I've decided I'm tired of that and I want to finally start.

Problem is, I can't really afford lessons at the moment ($35 for a half-hour? Come on!), and since I really don't even know where to begin, I'd like to have a starting point so I don't have to waste time and money paying someone to teach me the basics if I can learn them on my own.

Amazon sells some kits that promise to teach how to play acoustic and electric guitar that have mixed but mostly positive reviews. Anyone familiar with these (or can recommend an alternative)?

How is your search going?

You should probably start out with a book that has a DVD included. Many books that are published by Mel Bay have many from which to choose.

You want a good foundation with chords and once you're able, I would highly suggest a teacher. They'll help you with hand positioning and many things that you didn't realize would come up.

When you're really further along, google "Beatles to a Tee". There are 4 DVDs that cover only Beatles material. If you're just beginning, these will only frustrate you, but they are invaluable once you're able to follow.
