I love this demo too

Although the lyrics are kind of scary, I like the melody and John's voice doesn't sound as depressed as in in other demos. Hmm... the melody sounds quite happy, but the lyrics are not... that's confusing, but typical John... again

I feel like these demos are SO good that something must be done to bring them to the public's attention aside from just hardcore Beatles/Lennon fans. I mean something good. So good that I can't quite think it up right now, to be honest.

I absolutely agree with you, Scruffie

You know, I was sooooooo much hoping that some of John's demos would be released for the 30th anniversary of his death last year

I really don't understand why Yoko doesn't do anything to "polish" them up and publish them. I'm sure you could fill an album with and I certainly wouldn't blame her for making money with it, promised

Yeah, it's true that something should be done, but I can't quite think it up too right now

Default It's Real

I think she took the most useable demos for the Milk & Honey album already.

Here's a nice instrumental ditty that John recorded around 1979. Guitar and whistling.

Oh I don't know about that hib. "Real Love" is astonishingly beautiful, and many of the ones on here are being compiled into a pretty fantastic playlist. I believe modern technology has ways of blowing us away and there is hope for these demos for something.

Maybe I'm just being a pathetic optimist, but I'm ok with that too.

Default I Watch Your Face

An unfinished demo from the time John wrote I Don't Wanna Face It.

The lyrics are quite unfinished as well but what there is goes something like this:

I watch your face while you are sleeping
No one told me life was so worth keeping
Now you're here

Lovely. Apparently, this is one of the melodies he was playing with that eventually became Starting Over. The lyrics are curious, however. Was he singing to Yoko or to Sean?

Default Serve Yourself

Wow, can't believe this one hasn't been posted yet. One of my all-time favorites. Love how he sounds a bit like Johnny Rotten when he sings "You gotta serve yourse-elf..." in the earlier choruses. And his comments, giggles, and snide little digs... pure Lennon heaven!!

Here's the Anthology version:

...and a piano version:

The fact that he made both piano and guitar demos makes me think that maybe, just maybe, this song was more than just a lark, a parody of Gotta Serve Somebody. Wonder what would've happened if he had actually released it... Yikes!

Maia, you have just successfully posted my absolute FAVORITE John unreleased song of them all. I have nothing but praiseworthy things to say about his hardass vocal and piercing lyrical delivery. I am in full agreement with the content of this song and it is superior the Dylan drodge it was supposedly mocking.

Default Wouldn't that song have been PRIME for the Concert after 9/11?

I don't know why, but listening to this made me think of what a richness this would have provided for the Concert for 9/11, if John had still been alive. Doesn't let anyone off the hook. Certainly would have kicked bloody "Freedom" in the butt. And PLENTY controversial.

Does anyone actually take Freedom seriously? I'm not kidding. I'm not much of a Paul solo fan and even I felt embarrassed for him.

John would have probably composed something brilliantly rhetoric about the whole matter. But I like where you're going with this one wilde. I really do.

Somehow I have a feeling he'd smooth the lyrics a little bit. Not too much though but there's an unfinished quality to them right now, I think.

Here's one version of the lyrics anyway:

Well, I've got a story to tell
Well, I should tell

You say you found Jesus, and he's the only one
You say you found Mohammed, and he's a lot of fun
You say you found the Buddha, and he's the only way
You say you found Krishna, and he's the light of your day
Well, there's something missing in this godalmighty world and that's your mother, mother!

She say you serve yourself, ain't nobody gonna do for you
Serve yourself, ain't nobody gonna do for you
Well, you may believe in devils and you may believe in lords
But you know, you're gonna have to serve yourself, honey
Get off your knees

Spell M, O, E, honey, H, E, R

You got to serve yourself, ain't nobody gonna do for you
You got to serve yourself, ain't nobody gonna do for you
Well, you may believe in devils and you may believe in lords
But you're gonna have to serve yourself

Get off your knees, ***

You say you found Jesus, and he's the only one
You say you found the Buddha, and he's lot of fun
You say you found Mohammed, and he's the only way, yeah hey
You say you found Krishna, and he's the light of your day
Well, there's something missing in this godalmighty world and that's your mother
Yes, momma!
Hear me calling, momma!

She say you got to serve yourself, ain't nobody gonna do for you
Got to serve yourself, ain't nobody gonna do for you
Well, you may believe in devils and you may believe in lords
But you're gonna have to serve yourself, honey
No room service here

Well, it's your mother, oh it's your mother

You say you found Jesus, and he's the only one
You say you found the Buddha, well he's a lots of fun, yeah
And you say you found Mohammed, and he's the only way
And you say you found Krishna, Krishna, and he's the light of your day
Well, there's something missing in this godalmighty stew and it's your mother
It's your mother
Hear me calling, mom!

Spell M, O, T tired, heh-heh-heh!

Default That's The Way The World Is

Here's a rather interesting demo that went through some rather astonishing changes. For one thing it gave birth to both 'I'm Stepping Out' and 'Real Love'. The verse took a detour through the chorus of 'Girls And Boys' and then further evolved through 'Real Life' before find home.

The lyrics:

Why must we be alone
No one to call us home
Do do do doo do doo doo
Do do do doo doo doo

Why must we be afraid
No need to doo doo doo
Do do do doo do doo doo
Here to me
Why must we be afraid

That's the way the world is
That's the way the world is
That's the way the world is
That's the way the world is

Do do do doo do doo
Do do do doo do doo
Do do do doo do doo
Do do do doo do doo

That's the way the world is
That's the way the world is
That's the way the world is
That's the way the world is

If it don't feel right
If it don't look right
If it don't feel right

I really like this one. It's got that haunting voice that I recognize in so many of his demos. I adore it. John's voice alone is like a dream. I can fall immediately and very intensely within seconds. He was being very prophetic and philosophical for such a young man.

Thank's for uploading this song, Scruffie

Yes, John's voice is so characeristic in those demos. It sounds like from far away and yet so near, as if you were in the same room, like a private concert.

I don't know why, but I always listen to these songs in the dark, on my bed, just before falling asleep. I couldn't listen to them, like I listen to songs on the radio, while busy with doing something else than just listening. They are so special and so personal to me, like the musical testament of a great musician.... Oh well, I didn't mean to get sooo sentimental, sorry

I feel the same way about his demos Snoopy! I am just like you. I love to be in a quiet zone when I listen to these demos. I adore them and I LOVE his voice on them.

By the way, HIB uploaded the video! I can't take credit for her in-depth knowledge. But I will post a few very soon.

Default Do the God save Oz

I'm going to go a little off the strict demos here and post a couple of songs that John wrote in support of the Oz magazine obscenity trial. Oz magazine was sort of an adult version of MAD magazine, containing pornographic material. They really got into trouble when they allowed underage contributors being published. (No, not child porn!)

So, the freedom fighting John arranged for and recorded a charity EP for Oz containing the songs God Save Oz and Do The Oz. The A-side, God Save Oz, was recorded by Bill Elliot and The Elastic Oz Band, which (if I understand correctly) is an alias for the Plastic Ono Band. Here is John's version of the song, which can also be found on the Anthology:

And a demo of the song:

And Elliot's version:

John played on the B-side and here's the official track that's a bonus track on the 2000 remaster of the Plastic Ono Band album
