Default Spokeo - On Guard! Beware! Achtung! Aviso!

BEWARE of http://www.spokeo.com.

This is a US based site that not only has your address, age, name and social networking information, but pictures of your home! Not all of the information they list is accurate. What is TERRIFYING is there are pictures of your house if they have your address!

The steps you can take to protect yourself is to copy the URL that comes up with your name. Click on the privacy option at the bottom of the page and follow the directions. I found myself in there. The irony of it all is I never use anything but a screen name on FB & Twitter. Spokeo is just one of many online information broker sites. (Luckily Spokeo didn't find me on FB and Twitter). Even signing for a card or coupon at a grocery store puts your information out there. NEVER PUT YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS ON ANYTHING YOU FILL OUT FOR ANY REASON. If the business person is so rude as to insist that you do, say you're a techno-troglodyte and that you don't have a computer OR an e-mail address. Phone and utility bills are other ways these cyber brokers collect your personal data. DON'T DO ANY ONLINE BANKING. Regardless of how "convenient" it is, do your banking IN PERSON.

Be VERY CAREFUL in whatever you put on the Internet. Someone on another website forum provided a Chicago Tribune article about it:

Should I be Worried About Spokeo.com?

Some additional steps you might want to take is to opt out of PeopleSearch/PeopleFind; your county voting poll register; whitepages.com and sites like Classmates. Some people just use part of their names or misspell their names. Remember, it's up to you to protect yourself and your privacy and your interest.

In 2000 and 2001 I received death threats on line from a political discussion board. I knew even a decade ago the dire need for online privacy controls. What I DIDN'T know then (and not until 2002) was about search engines like Google; I didn't know until 2005 about whitepages.com and these other sites. I only just today learned about Spokeo. I already removed myself from their site.

Again, Spokeo uses third-party information. For any legal transaction, such as purchase of a home, car or other major business, DON'T provide your e-mail address. Use a box number. Even Spokeo will list people's box numbers, but not necessarily the correct names. Again, it's up to YOU to protect your privacy.

I just searched my name, and so far there's nothing for me. I will be careful, though - I NEVER use my real name on ANYTHING online except when emailing my friends.

OH…MY…GOSH!!! This looks REALLY scary! I don't post my real name anywhere, so my name was on the site but for different people who have the same name as me, and I never post really personal infomation (where I go to school, my phone #, etc) on websites. I even made a new email for this website!

Be wary of Pipl.com as well.

Remove yourself from Intelius.com

I don't know about this site, but I found out from someone today about https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2, which according to some allegedly protects your computer. The claim is that this sitenhelps you see if your own computer is protected. I read their first page; did not proceed and want to know more about this first. The whole thing just terrifies me.

Contact any court with which you have had any legal issues to suppress your information. If you own property, call your county tax office and request that this information be suppressed. You may have to go in person. If you live out of the area, write them and make damn good and sure that your request has been heard.

Ask your phone company to list you under a pseudonym and use a box number for a public address.

Be extremely careful of Archives.com. Make sure your birth certificate and any other information about you is removed. Check their Opt-Out policy. Do it ASAP!

Edited to Add: On 1/29/11 I had myself removed from Spokeo by clicking on the Privacy Link and following the instructions. It terrifies me to think that any personally identifiable information about you is so readily available. Stalkers will no doubt love Spokeo.

You can request to be removed from the site, but you have to remember the actual info is still out there. Spokeo just puts it together.

Another thing: You can sign up for a free account at SoodooNims which is an email forwarding service. This'll actually allow you to create a bunch of "alias" (pretty much fake emails) that can hide your real email without having to manage 5000 accounts. And you can delete them anytime.

Yeah this is getting kinda nutty with how easily we can all find out each other's personal info. I took my name and some of my family's names off Spokeo. Although I will say it didnt have all my info correct when I saw it there. Which is probably a good thing.

All very well but in many cases people make it so easy for sites like the above by putting a lot of personal information in their profile and in their writing.

For instance things you like and people you have crushes on and where you went to school and what you do from day to day and like "I will be out for vacation as of tomorrow to... for 2 weeks (which for instance is awesome to read for burglars and there is a lot of evidence that these things happen) and like "write me on my e-mail addy or my facebook or my twitter.

Especially younger people are so esay to give away a lot of personal information from being enthousiastic.

That is for instance why Facebook is considering offering shares in the company because for many companies all this personal information about people is worth a lot of money.

My history teacher told us that whenever we give someone our email address and personal information, say for a club card at a grocery store, the store has the right to sell that information to whoever they think is necessary. I still think that's pretty scary.

FaceBook terrifies the heck out of me. The only reason I signed up was to stay in contact with people I have not seen in ages due to location and other factors. It does have the good quality of allowing friends to remain in contact.

I don't play any of the games or join any applications because that pulls you and your information into the vast net yonder. I think that is just too risky.

I don't use my name; I don't use my location and I set my privacy settings to the maximum. I never want my picture anywhere online. I also don't want my birthday online either. Privacy is more precious than gold to me. Family members started their network on FB and I only joined (under a different, non-Beatles related screen name) so as to keep up with them. I don't use my picture; I have a cool non-Beatle avatar that I use over there. Again, the privacy settings are at maximum.

As for Spokeo, this REALLY me! Although I took myself off and one other relative, what also SCARES me is that they list the adult members of the household. It's good that the information isn't always accurate - that helps maintain the illusion of privacy. Still, it irks the heck out of me that this information is even available in the first place.

As for Soodoonims, which I signed up for today, if I understand correctly, they just filter certain e-mails and use the dummy e-mail as a return address. If I am not correct, please clue me in. I appreciate all help. Does Soodoonims filter all your emails? I am not sure. I know that if I were to sign up for say, a card in a grocery store, I'd use the dummy Soodoonim address and, if I am understanding correctly, they would then forward it to me. The party who initially got an e-mail address from me would not know it was a dummy address unless they knew the domains being offered at Soodoonims.

Oh, and what are the other sites where your information might be found? These are the ones I know about:

PeopleFind
123PeopleSearch
whitepages.com
Spokeo.com
Pipl.com

Your local tax office where voting and property records are filed
Your local court to make sure any legal documents are not available for online searches. Keep copies of all correspondence, snail mail or e-mail that you send to these online info brokers.

You might want to state that stalking is a real concern you have. I speak from experience when I say stalkers (having been stalked) are reason enough to want to protect your privacy as best as you can.

Check the sites every 3 months to make sure you haven't been put back in. Whenever you sign up for anything or use your e-mail, you run the risk of being found on online searches in sites such as these. Leave nothing to chance.

Always, when you request to opt out, state very clearly in your letter that you want to opt out of the site's satellites and affiliates.

FPSHOT is right. If you will be away or you want to talk about where you attended school, do it in a private e-mail to whomever you wish to correspond. DON'T put large volumes of personally identifiable information in your profiles.

Is there any way to have ALL your information removed or made unavailable for online searches?

Thank you for the good reminders - it is easy to get lulled into a false sense of security. Having been stalked, I can't bang on the drum loud enough for PROTECTING YOUR PRIVACY!

What you do is you create a dummy email. When you sign up for something (either online or filling out a card), put the dummy email in instead of the real one.

What they recommend is you create a dummy for each thing you sign up for. So if you start getting spam you can delete that one. I actually started using it when BeatleLinks blocked Gmail.

Another thing is that it also lets you reply to emails and still keep your address hidden.

Thanks. That was how I thought it worked.

What I am not sure about is how you can reply to emails and keep your address hidden. Do you use the dummy address when you sign into yahoo, aol, gmail or whoever your server is? And is there really no way to get rid of personally identifiable information on the 'Net?

What about ReputationDefender.com and other reputation defenders of your online rep and info? They do charge, but how effective are they?

Someone said that this site helps you check how well your own computer is protected: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 Does anybody here know anything about this site?

I also recommend LifeLock for your identity protection. I have LifeLock and am extremely pleased with them.
