Back Beat...?
Hello Beatle Buddies -
I was talking to a friend in NY about the Beatles, and he remembered seeing a film about their group and Stuart Sutcliffe (I might have really messed up the spelling of his last name - forgive me if this is the case ). I think he said it was called 'Back Beat' - but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any input on this film? Do I even have the title right? Is it worth seeing? I'd love to have your opinions... I value the Beatle-thoughts I encounter here.

Re: Back Beat...?
backbeat is an excellent movie about the real early days propfessionally done. great soundtrack, and story. it's about the Beatles without the cliches as it is a legitimate film. highly recommended.

Re: Back Beat...?
Hi Allie, you got the spelling right so no worries there. As for the film, Backbeat is a real good one, one of the best about the Beatles in my opinion - and you will enjoy it thoroughly without doubt. It focuses more on the friendship between John and Stu and is set in the Hamburg days, around 1960. And there's a striking resemblance between John and Ian Hart (who plays him), as well as that of Gary Bakewell, who plays Paul. There are a few inconsistencies with some of the facts as you'll find in any movie about the Beatles, but when it works, the film gives viewers a unique dose of history and nostalgia to keep them interested. The music is a nostalgic revelation in itself! Go get it out and watch it the first chance you get, and enjoy!

Re: Back Beat...?
I have watched the movie but I have also read the book. Naturally the book has a lot more detail and I especially enjoyed the way it set the scene in Liverpool.

You reckon NWM??? He really sort of aggitated me as John - both in the way he looked and the way he played him.
I remember my brother said to me after seeing it that if he didn't know who or what John was before he had seen the movie, he would have come out thinking he was a total loser.

Me also.
I really wasn't all that taken by the movie although I have heard others say they liked it.
I also got the impression from the book that if it wasn't for Stu there would have been no Beatles. I know that every factor had its place but...??

I thought the Paul resemblance was a lot closer obviously, but still even with John I think they did a reasonably good job (compared to anything else that's out there). Have you maybe seen anything better? I'd be interested to see it if there is.

Re: Back Beat...?
Well I'd say that he was of about the same quality as other "Johns" that I have seen... and I don't expect to see any better either. Every single "John" is so dud in my eyes that I reckon I could do a better job.

Re: Back Beat...?
I've seen the soundtrack but I've never been able to find the video. Do you think it would be under musicals or drama or what?

nowhere man:
thank you for the input regarding the film. i actually enjoyed it - and thought that the portrayl (spellingn again?) of john and stuart was pretty good. again, i don't have much to compare it with... i've never seen any other movies (made for tv, etc.) depicting our fab four. any suggestions? (that question is for anyone...)

Re: Back Beat...?
nowhere man -
thank you so much for your "list o' titles"... i will definately be checking out each of them.
question for anyone: how would i get a hold of the made-for-tv films? i.e.: on a different thread i was asking about the 'linda mccartney story', and am not sure about how to get or find a copy. if anyone knows, i would greatly appreciate it...
thanks again, beatlefriends!

Re: Back Beat...?
A good place to look for these titles is at www.ebay.com ... they usually have quite a nice selection of different things there, including those that are harder to find elsehwere - and more often than not at a cheaper price too.
