I'm always checking out eBay for Rickenbacker guitars but like you I find them too expensive at this point.
I'm thinking I'm going to get one of these though:

Hmmmmm.....
Unlike Epi's and "Fender" knock-offs, I don't know if there's an equivalent copy for Ricks.
I had a Rick 640(?) - Tom Petty style" Rick 12-string many years ago but sold it. Duh! I replaced it eventually with a Framus 12-string.
Anyway... good luck! Hope you find something.

Hey man...
After doing some research, I learned that Rickenbacker is veeeeery protective of its guitar designs, and anyone making knock-offs are generally sued promptly.
Any knock-offs that do exist out there are immediately yanked off eBay, should they be posted. So it seems you've got a challenge on yuor hands. That said...
I just came across this site. Not sure how old it is (didn't delve into it at all), or if these are still being made, but...

I bought two of these as soon as they came out. They play great, it has a Gibson scale neck and the sound is pretty damn close to an original 325, not noticable enough to cost an extra $3K in the price. I use one in our tribute band by loaning it to our John and the other I keep at home. The one we gig with is getting kind of nicked up and showing some use, but still plays and sounds great. Within a month of them coming out Ric pulled the rug out on Dillion with the lawsuit threat, but the guy I got mine from has his own music store and had ordered 8. He won't even attempt to put one on e-bay, the Ric police are always monitoring for Ric copy items and anything saying Lennon copy etc.

Has this guy got a web-site for his store so as to get in touch with him? I'm not sure whether I could afford one right now, but...
