Seriously though, age is, to a great extent, a state of mind. And remember, you should never mock older people because you're going to BE one of them someday, if you're lucky.

Re: Nirvana Song Called Best of Past 25 Years
When you really think about it though, when you're a teenager, age 30 seems to be very old and yet, when you reach that age, it doesn't seem so old anymore. And Magill's right, (and so is John when he said "age is just a state of mind one of his songs off of his Anthology). My mind went blank! Alzheimer's is settling in early! What in the heck do they think they are? Not famous? Not rich? Bah! Bitching about something that they are a part of...Makes sense to me...
Whatever happened to the real punk? The Ramones? The Sex Pistols?
All I know is that there were a million other songs that were relesed in the past 25 years that could blow Nirvana's song away! They are really undeserving of the title "best song of the past 25 years"!

That said -- I guess I AM an old lady, because I love the Clash and the Ramones...never cared for the Sex Pistols, but I STILL think they're better than any of the so-called "punk" groups of today...and just remember, without THOSE bands, today's bands wouldn't BE, so just give that a thought or two...

Re: Nirvana Song Called Best of Past 25 Years
The genre of the bands you listed, D-HaRrIsOnSgUrl28, are grunge (like Nirvana was), not punk. Susan's right. If it weren't for pioneers like Sid Vicious, Joey Ramone, Joe Strummer & Johnny Rotten, there'd be no Nirvana, GC, Blink182, etc. It'd like putting The Backstreet Boys in the same class as GC. YIKES!

(And actually, my 4 1/2 year old son sounds more articulate...no offense...) I'm sorry, it just makes a person sound incredibly uneducated when they say things like "I don't see any reason why I should use proper grammar and spelling on the internet." Why is this any different from any other kind of writing? I can't imagine that a teacher would accept a paper written like that!
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to take this topic off onto a tangent...but it's one of my real pet peeves...and as an editor, I can also tell you that if I received any submission to my zine that wasn't in reasonably coherent English, I wouldn't even bother to read it. It would rate an instantaneous rejection letter.
And now, back to the topic at hand...pardon me for being "crochety," but perhaps I'm really lamenting the fact that no one seems to know how to write or speak properly anymore...

You mentioned you were lazy about writing coherent English on the Internet...hmmm, it seems like more people are like that now on the computer than even a few years ago. It's too bad it's going that way....
Sorry, this is off topic.

Re: Nirvana Song Called Best of Past 25 Years
Speaking of punk bands nobody has mentioned Bad Brains, DRI, Black Flag or The Dead Kennedys or Meat Puppets. These are bands that also inspired Kurt Cobain. Nirvana signified a return to real guitar music in the early 90's. But as far as Smells Like Teen Spirit being the best of the last 25 years, hell it's not even the best song in the Nirvana catalog. By the way Just Like Starting Over checked in at #72 on this list. But between Billie Jean and Smells Like Teen Spirit give me Nirvana any day of the week.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">It may have signified the return of real guitar music in pop (what is considered mainstream during that era) But heavy metal was always there and bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, and power metal and hair matal groups all played with traditional four piece band with lead and rhythm guitar. Not to mention the early 90s with the advent of bands like Dream Theater, that not only play metal but incorporate amazing guitar solos with experimental sounds, ideas, and great vocals considering the common metal band is not revered for their main vocalists sound and skill.

Re: Nirvana Song Called Best of Past 25 Years
It would be nice if they qualified their choice with "the greatest ROCK song of the past 25 years." (I looked but didn't see that qualifier; if I missed it, please point it out to me.) Let us not forget that there are a few other genres of music out there (and I'm not talking about rap and country, either). I don't advocate trying to decide between, say, a show tune and a rock song--you know the old apples vs. oranges impossibility--but I scoff at the notion that rock is the ONLY genre that produces good music.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Yes, I am for real. Are you? Being born in 1982 makes me old? Ooooooookay! You have no idea what you are talking about, I am sorry. You have no idea what good music is. Punk wouldn't be around if it weren't for bands like the Ramones, and the Sex Pistols. The kind of "punk" (aka pop) you are into won't be remembered in 25 years from now that is for sure. They are not against any system, they are just as manufactured as anyone else in the music biz these days.
I like the White Stripes (since when are they punk?!?!?), but I am also entitled not to like "your" kind of music, and just because I don't like it doesn't make me "old". I am also entitled to my opinions. I happen to like real punk, with a real message, not because they spike their hair and have a tattoo sleeve. Also, not singing about how they hate rich people...Give me a break!
But the way you responded to my post only confirms one thing with me...and HMVNipper (and the others) said it best.

Re: Nirvana Song Called Best of Past 25 Years
Being that I'm bored, I'll treat you to my thrilling commentary on the Top 100... (Go here to see the songs in question, you'll have to jump a hyperlink or two)
100. I hate this. This is one of her worst songs, the vocals suck and the video is stupid.
99. I love Norah Jones, and this is a cool song.
98. Catchy, but nothing I would listen to regularly.
97. I love Devo, and when you know the story behind the song, this song's even funnier. Love it.
96. It's a guilty pleasure.
95. With a title like that, who can resist? Nice song.
94. A teen anthem. Love it.
93. I absolutely love this song. NIN is an awesome singer-songwriter, this is probably one of my favorite songs of the 90s. It's not for kids, but it's a hell of a song.
92. I plead the 5th.
91. Ditto.
90. I was young when I first heard it, didn't know what it was about...when I realized...
89. Pat's cool, and this is a cool song.
88. This is a great song, they couldn't have done this one better.
87. Great harmonies. One of Moon's last songs, he does awesome on it.
86. Great song...for me to poop on. (I love that sock puppet dog.) I know it's got a good message, but it's boring.
85. Cool song, not a fan of him but his singles are ok.
84. This song (and band) are excellent.
83. Nothing more than a charity single to me...good intentions, ok melody, but nothing special.
82. I love this song!!
81. Another guilty pleasure..."I'm sorry Mrs. Jackson...I am for REEEEEAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!" Cool video, with all the animals.
80. Can't stand the band or the song.
79. Yet another guilty pleasure...I mostly like it for the video (Beyonce )
78. Good song.
77. Another guilty pleasure..."Is it worth it? Let me work it..."
76. AWESOME song. One of the best on the list.
75. Ditto. Beyond ditto. I love this song.
74. Eh...not a big fan.
73. I like the story behind it, but otherwise bleh.
72. Of course I love it
71. Hate DMB, hate this song.
70. Annoying as crap.
69. Not awful...not great.
68. Overrated, simple...annoying.
67. Pretty good song.
66. Nah, not a fan.
65. I think it's pretty cool...I always laugh when I hear that girl say "I am getting so hot, I'm gonna take my clothes off." It sounds funny, even though the ladies say it to me every night
64. Nice power pop tune.
63. I love this one.
62. Love the Pretenders...good song.
61. Can't stand the band, enjoy the song...just a little...
60. Repetitive...but good riffs.
59. Not a fan of this guy at all.
58. Doesn't even sample a good song...so why is it so popular?
57. Nice sentiments, but not a favorite of mine.
56. She's pretty cool. The song's nice too.
55. Don't like Talking Heads at all.
54. Good song...catchy.
53. Overrated.
52. Ok.
51. Can't stand the artist or the song.
50. He's done better songs, why didn't they use "Fly Away"?
49. Don't like the band or song at all.
48. Ditto.
47. Ditto.
46. Awesome bass riff, great collaboration by two of my favorites.
45. Annoying and overrated.
44. I can't understand why this song is still popular, I never really liked it.
43. They're pretty cool, I like this song.
42. I love this song.
41. Pretty good.
40. Ok song.
39. Ditto.
38. Pretty good.
37. Ditto.
36. Ditto.
35. Ditto.
34. Nah.
33. Ditto.
32. Alright song.
31. Nah.
30. Ok.
29. Not a fan of him really.
28. She's hot, but I can't get into her music.
27. I don't even think I've heard this one.
26. Not bad.
25. Guilty pleasure again...
24. Eww.
23. I really don't like him.
22. Nah.
21. Good song by great band.
20. Nah.
19. Not bad.
18. I kinda like it, it's too long though.
17. Not bad.
16. Love it.
15. Ok song. I think the band's pretty overrated.
14. The artist annoys me, and the song's pretty stupid.
13. They're awesome. RIP Left-Eye.
12. She's awesome too.
11. One of the most overrated bands and songs in history.
10. Compared to #100, this song is good.
9. I like it, but nothing special. Personally I prefer #90.
8. I loathe this song.
7. He still annoys me, but this song's better than the last one of his on here.
6. Very good version of a nice song.
5. Not as good as their first song on the list.
4. Not as bad as you'd think.
3. I don't like it that much.
2. Ditto.
1. Awesome song, deserves the top spot.
