Default Yet Another "Greatest" List

This report comes from Dotmusic.
-*-*-*-*-*-

U2's 'One' has been voted the greatest song of all time in a poll by a UK music magazine.

The track, taken from the Irish rock superstar's landmark 1991 album 'Achtung Baby', came out top in a survey by Q.

It is amongst seven other entries for the band in the Top 1000, whilst Radiohead scored nine in total, with 'Creep' taking the number seven spot.

Elsewhere in the chart, Aretha Franklin is in second place with 'I Say A Little Prayer', originally written by Bacharach And David, followed by Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' at three.

The Beatles 'Day In The Life' is their highest entry, at four, with the Fab Four totalling four positions in the Top 1000, with 'Something', 'In My Life' and 'Paperback Writer'.

John Lennon's work featured significantly more heavily than Paul McCartney's, the deceased Beatle making the chart with eight solo tracks, compared to one for Sir Macca.

The full Top 10 is as follows:

1. U2 - 'One'
2. Aretha Franklin - 'I Say a Little Prayer'
3. Nirvana - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
4. The Beatles - 'A Day in the Life'
5. Elvis Presley - 'In the Ghetto'
6. Eminem - 'My Name Is'
7. Radiohead - 'Creep'
8. Destiny's Child - 'Independent Women'
9. Oasis - 'Live Forever'
10. Ike and Tina Turner - 'River Deep Mountain High'

Is this thing seriously real? This has got to be some sort of stupid joke, because I do not see how ANYONE would ever agree with that list!

Well, I read this on another article about this list:
"Q's writers and a selection of well-known musicians cast their votes for the list of great songs."

I think that kind of explains (somewhat) why this list is so weird (although the US lists compiled by artists and editors don't tend to be *this* weird). But what a musician and writer for a music magazine considers a great song and what the general public considers a great song tend to be VERY different.

I'm not even going to comment on the top ten of this list...
