A Incredible telegram is back from the past

My name is Yazid Manou. I'm a free lance music publicist and also a french Jimi Hendrix fanatic ! I'd like to share with you the following amazing untold story :

In 2005, I found the following in Hard Rock Cafe website (Key West, Florida) :

telegram dated 10/21/69 sent by Jimi Hendrix to Paul McCartney. The message reads, "We are recording an LP together this weekend in NY. How about coming in to play bass… peace, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Tony Williams."

Today, still looking for a shot of this amazing document, I just found the telegram is on display in Hard Rock Cafe Prague (Czech Republic) accompanied by a response saying Paul is away on holiday !!

Thanks to Hard Rock Cafe Paris, I obtained a picture of the document :



I know Hard Rock Cafe has more than 73000 memorabilia, but there was no mention NOWHERE about this document for 43 years....

I think Paul McCarney has never been informed about it !!!

I once read Linda briefly dated Jimmi on some celebrity dating website, who knows if that is accurate, I do know they were good friends. She stated so on Arsenio Hall's show years ago.
Jimmi's dad seemed sweet, I know it broke his heart to outlive his child.

In regards to the blog, I recall seeing a pic of George and John checking out the stripper, all I can say , to quote a Janet Jackson song"nasty boys" (I'm joking).

It's Jimi, not Jimmi. And Linda never dated Jimi. She admired him and really enjoyed shooting him, that's it.

Few years ago we had a great debate on some french forums about this following very weird shot from a UK newspaper. No one really could decide if it was a fake or not.

Well they absolutely played there in June 67 and The Beatles saw them so I reckon it's probably real....if that is taken at the Saville, that is.

what was the outcome of the debate? Undecided? or did most think it was fake?

I checked the old french forum, the date is January 29th 1967.

We found the date, the photo quality is strange but we all thought the 4 Beatles attended the show.

Only Paul and George went to see Hendrix at the Saville on June 4th. This photo has been attributed by many to earlier in the year, to January 29th, when all four lads saw Hendrix at the Saville together. My Lewisohn chronology, which is a bit old, says that only John and Paul went together in January, though... but that all four saw Donovan at the Saville on April 24th, so maybe it's from that date?

I go for the January 29th date because the next day they filmed the Strawberry Fields Forever promo, and in the photo they look exactly the same as in that film.

I read that Paul and Donovan were friends.

I saw Donovan in 2003 at the Chicago Fest and boy, he is GOOD! I liked him when I was a child; I like him now. "Atlantis was always my favorite song by Donovan.

On March 26th, I talked to Peter Brown who answered to the telegram on October 22nd, 1969 : he did not remember at all this telegram which is quite natural after 43 years ! But at least, now he knows I put "some" light on this document...

PAUL MCCARTNEY has shot a video paying tribute to Jim Marshall, inventor of the Marshall amplifier, who passed away recently at the age of 88. The clip shows THE BEATLES legend and his backing band playing instrumental version of the JIMI HENDRIX classic 'Foxy Lady'. McCartney stops the tune and says: “This goes to the family and the friends of…the great Jim Marshall, founder of Marshall Amps. Jim made it loud. We want to thank Jim. Man, we love you. Our tribute to you.”

I can tell you they never dated on a celebrity dating website, as the (public) internet was invented in 1993 and Hendrix had died 23 years earlier.

Here is the translation :

On the 21st of October 1969, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and the drummer Tony Williams sent a telegram to Paul McCartney (who was a big fan of Jimi).
"We are recording and LP together this weekend in New York - STOP - How about coming in to play bass - STOP - Peace - Jimi Hendrix Miles Davies (sic) Tony Williams."

On October 22, Peter Brown, who worked for the Beatles' record label, replied on behalf of Paul: "Ref. cable received from Hendrix, Davies and Williams. Paul McCartney away from London on holiday, not expected to return for two weeks."

When the ex-Beatle was later shown the telegram, he was stunned "Am I dreaming? Is it a joke? Where did you find that?" The documents come from Yazid Manou, the French Hendrix specialist, who discovered them while researching on the web-sites of The Hard Rock Café. One document is at Key West (Florida 2005) and the other in Prague (Czech Republic 2012).

"How is this possible? Jimi! Jimi wanted to play with me and I find out now? Why?"

McCartney suddenly realized that October 21, 1969 had been a special day: "An american radio had just announced that I was dead and it had spread worldwide. The Beatles were in a difficult period. I went to my house in Scotland and I didn't want to be joined... so, I never got this telegram. I was dreaming to play with Jimi. We knew each other. I remember having seen him playing at The Speakeasy Club, in London, in 1966 : Jimi was astonishing, breathless, impossible to categorise. I remember that he had played his famous version of "Hey Joe" and a song of Howlin' Wolf. I have never played with him; I thought that we would have all the time in the world. And he died one year after; he was 27. When, in 1967, I was one of the art directors of the Monterey Festival, I got him invited."

Unknown in the USA, Hendrix exploded onto the scene, thanks to that concert. "What could Jimi, Miles, Tony and I have done in a studio ? I know I would have rather played guitar than bass... or both. Jimi had no limits. He brought together psychedelic rock, electric blues, gospel... and his technique remains matchless. For 40 years, I recalled his genius in pretty all of my concerts."

Evidently moved, McCartney adds "It is at the same time my biggest missed opportunity and also a great news... an inspiration to write new songs."

Yazid I'm so pleased for you that you at last have had a reaction to the telegram.

Did you by any chance hear his Howard Stern interview from the other week? He mentions it in that. Just in passing but he mentions it when asked about playing with Jimi.
