Default Lennon's lyrics in airport touchdown

Lennon's lyrics in airport touchdown
Sep 21 2006

By Sam Lister Daily Post Staff

A GIANT coloured vinyl quoting John Lennon lyrics has been installed at Liverpool airport.

The artwork is the last one from this year's Liverpool Biennial to be completed and is now on display to passengers.

The work, by Portuguese artist and political activist Rigo 23, has been hung around the check-in area, arrivals area, and on the glass facade of the airport terminal building.

They are daubed with excerpts from Lennon's songs.

These include such titles as Give Peace a Chance, Imagine, Well Well Well and Give Me Some Truth.

The piece looks at how the former Beatles' words are still significant today.

Lewis Biggs, chief executive of Liverpool Biennial, said: "As in our previous festivals, Liverpool Biennial is hugely grateful for the support of Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

"The artwork by Rigo 23 on the facade of the building, in the arrivals and departure areas, engages with the current political climate and was especially commissioned as a partnership between Liverpool Biennial and LJLA.

"Rigo 23 is based in San Francisco, and this commission adds to the airport's unique ambition to be a destination for international art in its own right. Watch out for new developments in 2008."

Rigo 23 is the name the artist, Ricardo Gouveia, adopted as a teenager in high school when he was involved in producing a controversial publication.

He also created the much-talked about caged lion pieces on St George's Plateau.

JLA first worked with the Liverpool Biennial in 2004, exhibiting a commission by Yoko Ono, which was displayed on three giant 48-sheet poster sites throughout the terminal building.

The airport has since been keen to develop more displays of public art for airport passengers and visitors.

And, in the run-up to Capital of Culture in 2008, it is particularly keen to show work by local artists.

Neil Pakey, the airport's chief executive, said: "When we renamed the airport John Lennon Airport in 2002, we did so with a view to be working more closely with the arts world and communities across Merseyside. Subsequently, Liverpool City Council set out its stall to encourage more 'public arts' or for more art to be on display in public places.

"We are happy to be working with the Liverpool Biennial and we are ever-appreciative of Yoko for her ongoing support in helping us develop our John Lennon Airport experience.

As the location for John's statue and the Yellow Submarine, we aim to continue to honour John's memory and respect his values."

I would hope if "Above us Only Sky" was quoted that it wasn't a reminder for all outgoing pilots (sorry to any nervous fliers for the bad taste joke) but sometimes my mind works in odd ways...
Seriuosly tho' it's good to see Liverpool finally doing stuff like this to properly honnor their four most famous sons
living is easy with eyes closed,
misunderstanding all you see,
it's getting hard to be someone,
when it all works out,
it doesn't matter much to me
