I would love to have one of these basses. I don't care if it was never in Pauls possession, the Hofner Violin Bass is the most beautiful bass out there.

Don't drool too much when I show you a pic of my bass guitar heyBeatle.

Sadly, this isn't a Hofner Viola. This is in fact made an Epiphone Viola but the style is almost identical (the only difference being the metal stringplate at the bottom).

It cost me 300, but it was worth every penny. It's even left handed!

This is the bass I've started to learn all the Beatles songs on. I can't wait to join a Beatles tribute band That's the next stage of my fantastic plan.

God that's beautiful!

My bass is just a black DeArmond bass, regular shape. The only thing cool about it is the really thin neck it's so easy to hold. I'm sad now, my bass is so pitiful in comparison to the magnificence of Harbidges bass.

I recently became the recipient of a genuine Hofner bass. My beautiful wife bought it for me for my 40th birthday last week. I've been playing bass for 25 years, and the Hofner is truly a unique instrument. They are still being made (of course) by Hofner, in Germany, and are distributed by Boosey & Hawkes, a well-known instrument company in the US. Hofner has several violin-bass models built to the original '62, '63 and "Cavern" specs. Mine is a '62 (the year I was born) so it has that extra-special feel to it. I've played it in public a few times already and it really catches people's attention. FYI, list price is about $3000US.

Although I've always loved certain things
about the Hofner bass--(and particularly
Paul's of course) I still prefer the
Rickenbacker 4001 model basses to it-- at
least the ones with the horseshoe pickup
on it w/dots on the neck. I was fortunate
to get a 4001CS model--(the CS stands for
Chris Squire) and it's virtually the same as
the RIC bass Paul used to use on Pepper,
Mystery Tour and w/Wings except the color
really. I also have a Fender Precision which
is the bass I learned on when I started out.
I'll try to post a pic of one or both
basses if I become more knowledgeable on
how to do it-

Hofner violin basses ARE beautiful! Whether I need it or not...I am going to get one! It might be useful to have a bassist around in my band. (Considering how our appointed bassist doesnt have one!)
