A bootleg is a recording that was not officially released by the company that owns the band in question. It can be from another record company to someone working in their basement who has the equipment necessary to perform the tasks. A bootleg is mainly a disc that contains songs that might never have been released, like the Get Back bootleg, but sometimes it can be a copy of another record. Various Abbey Road copies come to mind. This is not a counterfeit though.

The difference between a bootleg and a counterfeit is that a counterfeit is trying to imitate the record that it's copying by being identical in every way, like a counterfeit Introducing the Beatles which people made to cash in on the records rareness.

A bootleg is different that the original recording. It may be a different company releasing the record in different packaging or/and with a different label.

Hope this helps.

If Harbige's definition is correct, I have 'Historic Live Recordings' and 'Introducing the Beatles', but again, I am not entirely sure what a bootleg is, so I may be mistaken. Are these, in fact, bootlegs?

A bootleg is an unofficial release. Introducing the Beatles is the 1st official album. The other one sounds like an official release also. The Rooftop Concert is a bootleg, for example, as the Beatles never officially released it. Most are rare live or alternate versions that someone got a copy of and pressed. the anthology is not a bootleg as it was officially released.

What is a bootleg? I wear bootleg jeans, but I don't think that is what you are referring to.

And the Anthology releases un-bootleged a bunch of my old stuff! Now they're just inferior sounding official releases. Confused yet Penny?

i hope this sounds less confusing, never listen to men! a bootleg is unrealeased albums or whatever, but look in the titles,or the beatles under a different name, example the beat brothers or beatles spelled beetles. live or rare. some companies that put them out would be like yellow dog,the genuine pig, jerden, just to name a few.some other titles, the peter sellers tape, ultra rare trax, look for stuff that seems "unusual". hope this helps.

Actully,The Beat Brothers are NOT the Beatles, but another band.Half of the recording was already on the reel when The Beatles happened upon Tony Sheridan. They became his backup band at the last minute, for some live dates, and part of the agreement was The Beatles got a piece of the studio time.

Jerry, that's funny how the anthology unbootlegged recordings. "The Long And Winding Road" on anthology is the same as from the Get Back Sessions only a little better quality.

Actually, the Beatles were called the Beat Brothers on their first Decca release, 'My Bonnie', because their name was too rude. You see in Germany, Beatles sounds like, 'peedle', which is German slang for penis.

Isn't it amazing what you find in books nowadays?
