Re: "Give peace a chance" at McCartney\'s Paris concert
Yes, Pipes of Peace is a great song!
You know, I love Paul and all I think he and John were equals, but Paul is VERY COMPETITIVE, so competitive in fact, he's kinda funny with some of his comments.
So what do you want to bet when they started chanting "Give Peace A Chance," after Here Today, a part of him was happy but a bigger part of him CRINGED that this solo Lennon song will end up never going away.

I didn't make it clear before -- the beef I have is not that the crowd was singing Give Peace a Chance...but that after all his American flag-waving and hyping of the "fight for the right to live in freedom," during the American tour, he has now draped himself in a French tricolor...in order to have them cheer for him.[/QB]

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">I'd have to disagree. I think that Paul would have been pleasantly surprised that the crowd broke out into "Give Peace A Chance." I think sometimes people forget that he and John WERE good friends for a long time, and I would think that he'd be happy that people were singing John's song and that it is relevent today. I don't think everything is a competition now between them. It may have been a long time ago, but I think he would just be happy that so many people support peace, and that John's legacy lives on. As for dressing up in France's colours, I don't see what's really wrong with that. The Beatles posed on the American flag when they came to the states, dressed in Japanese clothing when they went there - I think he's just having fun with it. Of course, he does do a lot of things for self promotion, you're right, but I think most of the time he just seems to want the crowd to feel proud of their nation.

Wonder how he felt when the crowd burst into one of JOHN'S songs?
Sorry, I'm just very cynical about this...don't come down on me, it just rubs me the wrong way. And I'm NOT anti-French or anything, either, that's not the point -- I'm just disappointed that Paul seems to embrace whatever is least detrimental to his popularity in a particular place, even if it is radically different from something he has espoused before.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">That's not really true, Paul has NEVER really been politically motivated- if you remember, He's the one who wasn't crazy about John's "Revolution" and John's political stuff. If you remember, in "Too Many People," he said "That's not like me."
And it's not- it's just not him and people shouldn't get mad at him for not being more political- he's tried a couple of times to do a few meaningful social songs- "Blackbird," "Give the Ireland Back to the Irish," "Pipes of Peace," and "Ebony and Ivory," but Paul got badly burned with "Ebony and Ivory" and was made fun of relentlessly for it. He's just not a DIRECT kinda person, you know- but that's okay- it's Paul- Paul is Paul and Paul is not John and that's okay- that's what made the Beatles so great, you know- if Paul had been just like John, it would not have been as good.
Paul has tried, you know, even with the song "Freedom," he tried and people barked at him that it was a terrible song and he should stick to what he knows- so I mean, HE HAS TRIED A LITTLE. But that's NOT PAUL MCCARTNEY and I'm okay with it.

He's always seemed fairly careful regarding what others think of him. I'm not saying this is a bad thing--Lord knows I love the guy to death--but I don't see him being super-vehement regarding any sort of touchy political issue.

Re: "Give peace a chance" at McCartney\'s Paris concert
Actually, in Too many people, he said 'not holding back, that's not like me,' so that's not what he was saying, but anyway-- you seem so angry at Paul-- HE'S ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT- in fact, he was the PR guy for the Beatles in the very beginning- it's because he was so manipulative that the Beatles may have gotten a little further than they would have without it.
That's PAUL. He's "Mr. Please Everybody"- sometimes you just have to accept and love people for who they are.

Re: "Give peace a chance" at McCartney\'s Paris concert
If I remember correctly(and on this one I do) Paul PERFORMED Give Peace a Chance at the Liverpool Tribute to John in 1990.So why should he get all ruffled if the crowd sings a John song.Look at the song writing credits on GPAC. Lennon AND McCartney. Even though we know Paulie didnt help write that one. As far as Macca not being political can anyone say Give Ireland Back To The Irish??????? Or Paul hobnobbing around in Washington DC last year hyping his land mine campaign. If Macca was playing a concert on the North Pole he'd probably wrap himself in a Santa suit to make the North Polians happy. After all they probably paid an arm and a leg to see him so why not cater to their happiness?

That is SO funny! You are right about knowing what message to deliver to an audience. One big Paul fan to another, I think Paul tries to fit into the crowd he is performing for. I also think Paul is a tactful businessman and a brilliant performer and a damn good person at that.
Oh, yeah, he also sings great too.

Re: "Give peace a chance" at McCartney\'s Paris concert
Actually, Yoko, on the Lennon Legend CD, at least, took McCartney off the credits to Give Peace a Chance- which really really really bugs me.
Is she can do that, she should agree to take John off "Yesterday," as Paul has asked about a billion times. I think it's only fair. Both songs are about equal in terms of being around in the future- well, maybe since it's on the Beatles albums, he shouldn't take it off, but when it appears on his solo stuff, he should take John completely off. I hate saying that, though, because a compilation album of Lennon/McCartney songs would each get a boost with both of the songs on them. so what if they wrote them separate? Someone made a good point once that although they would write things separately, the other partner's presence alone molded and shaped the song into what it became. Interesting.
I hate it that Yoko has booted McCartney's name off that record. McCartney has changed the credits order for "Yesterday," but he never booted him off completely and at least in interviews he has said he would never do that, anyway. Ono is not being fair.
