can anyone help me?
hiya. i'm not exactly a beatles expert (though i think they're cool) and for my AS level music coursework, i have to do a project about how the beatles changed between 1962 and 1970. i have to pick 3 songs to study and i'm really stuck because there are so many songs and i donl't really know many of them and i just feel lost. i love the song While My Guitar Gently Weeps. so i thought i might use that but apart from that i'm stuck as the songs need to span the years. i want good songs.. not neccessarily popular or cheesy ones.
HELP!!!!!!!

Re: can anyone help me?
Well a great big hello to you xmisscattyx. Welcome to Beatlelinks. I'm sure you will have so much fun here you will stay on after your project is done.
I myself don't know if I can help. I will ponder the question while I am at the grocery store. But I was just discussing this very song with one of our many wisemen here at the links, so I am sure you will get some help here. Welcome again. Pinky

Re: can anyone help me?
I'd first like to extend a great big welcome to you, Catty, hope you enjoy your time at the Links! You don't have to be a Beatles expert to hang around here, just as long as you like them!
Getting on to your question, along with While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I'd personally choose to do something like Love Me Do, (or I Want To Hold Your Hand) and Let It Be, or another song off their last album. Love Me Do was the Beatles first real hit, that got them onto the charts. I feel this song really displays the mood of the early sixties, very simple, a good tune, but not much else, and then Let It Be was on their last album, released after the group had broken up. When you listen to Love Me Do, a simple love song, with not much meaning behind its words, and then to Let It Be, whose music is much more involved and lyrics have a much deeper meaning, it makes you think, "wow. Is this even the same group??" I Want To Hold Your Hand is also a good suggestion for an early song, because it was their first #1 hit in the US and was what kicked off "Beatlemania".
If those songs don't do much for you, try surfing around the net and looking at some of the lyrics, if you have any albums I'd suggest playing some of them through and see if anything strikes your fancy.
Good luck!

Re: can anyone help me?
Hi and welcome.
If I get the question right, you need three songs which represent various periods in their years as a group.
Well, many examples can be given so probably others will follow after me - I hope so, because I like the subject -
1. Love me do
A good example of their first period where they were a band playing many "I love you, you love me" kinda songs
2. Tomorrow Never Knows
A good example of the pfycedelic period, with the special lyrics, the backward played tapes and additional sound effects
3. This is the hardest one, maybe someone else has a brighter idea about it. I would say something from Abbey Road or Let It Be, but then so many are typical 'solo related' songs. If you really have to have a song, I know one, but if not I would go for the so called Abbey Road Medley, which is a combination of various songs from the album representing very much the band as they were in their last period toghether as a band. So that is in fact from "Because" to "The End".
Here is a link to info of the album and the songs

In case you need one song, I would say "Something".
Good luck.

Re: can anyone help me?
hola catty it's great to have you here
this is a cool project, but geez! you can only pick three songs? no fair maybe love me do would be a good one to start out with? it's one of the first good lennon/mccartney songs and it was one that helped draw attention to the beatles. norwegian wood is a good one. it's edgier than most of their earlier work, with the sitar and lyrics. my dad always says he heard this one and realized just how good they are, more than just a passing pop novelty. something off of revolver would be good to show the beginning of their experimentation (musical and otherwise ). a day in the life is classic. that song broke so many rules. . . i think while my guitar. . . is a good choice; it not only shows how the beatles and their music were changing in the late sixties, but also how george began to come into his own as a songwriter. the end would be a good one to finish. it was their farewell, you know? it kind of summed everything up. it's also an awesome song yes, i know that's more than 3! i'm just trying to give you some options
well, i'm not sure how helpful that was. . . *you can probably come up with some much better ones than me! anyways, let us know what you end up choosing! good luck

Re: can anyone help me?
See I told you they were helpful. After some thought and reading their opinions here is mine.
Love Me Do is a good beginning song however if you want to pick a good one that's not extremely popular both my daughter think P.S. Ilove You is good.
something from revolver for middle time period.
And I would probably pick Lucy or something from Pepper for the later Beatles because I too think those are more of a collaberation of them as musicians. But if you use the medley from Abbey Road you do get them together/yet seperate which is what they became.
Just a thought . You have your work cut out for you. I hope this is not due this Monday because the board is sometimes slow on the weekends.

Re: can anyone help me?
Just another Suggestion,
One from the 3 Primary Songwriters:
The one from John (for me at least) would be You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
The one from Paul would be Mother Nature's Son.
The one from George would be I Want to Tell You
My reasoning for these choices are these are relitivly unpopular Beatle Songs, and in my opinion these are some of the best by each songwriter.

Re: can anyone help me?
Hmmm... interesting topic of study! I think if I were doing this I'd try to pick three songs by the same writer, since it doesn't seem right to compare, say, an early John song with a mid-career George song. They developed at different rates.
Having said that, I think George would be a good choice because he showed a lot of change and improvement across his relatively few Beatle songs. (Obviously the others did too, but it's harder to pinpoint changes with their considerably larger bodies of work.) So my recommendations would be... hmm....
Early George: "Don't Bother Me" or "I Need You"
Middle George: "Within You Without You" or "I Want to Tell You"
Late George: "Something" or "Here Comes the Sun"
He really does show an amazing amount of growth from stage to stage, doesn't he?
(The only reason I wouldn't use "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is because of Clapton's contribution. Same with "Taxman" and John. If that doesn't seem like a valid reason to you, by all means use them.)

Re: can anyone help me?
Early: Love Me Do
Psychodelic: Rain
Later: Don't Let Me Down
That's the twist!

Re: can anyone help me?
It suddenly occurred to me that my three all time favorite Beatles songs would fit well here:
I Saw Her Standing There
Rain
Here Comes The Sun

Re: can anyone help me?
What an amazing project! You are sooo lucky!
Here's my two cents,
I'd use From Me To You or I Saw Her Standing There to show the beginning, then maybe Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds or A Day In The Life for the middle, and then Let It Be or Here Comes the Sun. Just my opinion, but all those songs reflect on the mood and the times they were written in, so they'd probably be really good to use. Good Luck!

Re: can anyone help me?
yea.. you're probably right about While My Guitar Gently Weeps. i love it to pieces but the fact that clapton contributes so much to it probably makes it a bad choice for this project. i'm still trying to choose dammit! theres just too many good songs.
are there any particular features i should look for that were characteristic of certain stages?

Re: can anyone help me?
If I had to pick three, I'd choose:-
'I Want to Hold Your Hand' - The song that broke them in America, and after 'Please Please Me', 'From Me to You' and 'She Loves You', the apex of Lennon and McCartney's 'formulaic' writing.
'Tomorrow Never Knows' - The Beatles invent psychedelia a year early. More innovative and influential than 'Strawberry Fields Forever', and more of a collaborative effort between John and Paul than people realise.
'Hey Jude' - For a period after 1966, the Beatles were 'too weird' for some of those who had tapped a foot through 'Beatlemania' - this was the song that brought the strays back. A juggernaut of a song that overwhelms those who hear it, 'Hey Jude' is proof (if it were ever needed) of McCartney's standing as a classic songwriter: even John liked it...
