Concerts and Exhibition for George in Liverpool

THE Concert to launch the Exhibition features a diverse Array of musicians from around the world all gathered under one roof to celebrate and present the music that George made and loved in all its Technicolor glory.

All the way from Italy, perhaps the finest George Harrison tribute band in the world, “Sir Frankie Crisp and the Friars” kick things off in Style with a set devoted to George ‘s solo work including a song from each post Beatles album from all things must pass right up to posthumously released Brainwashed.

Next up are good friends of George, Ray Bernard and Karen Shutt. Ray was the first fully paid up member and later president of the George Formby Society. He has written countless articles on and taught the Ukelele plus performed on radio, tv and stage. Karen, soloist pianist and teacher will play a solo, as well as accompanying Ray to share with us the music they played for George at his home.

Another good friend of George, Gaurav Mazumdar, disciple of ravi shankar, who worked on the album “Chants of India” and played at “Concert for George” in 2002 visits St George ‘s Hall from India to represent George ‘s passion for classical Indian music with a piece especially composed for the occasion as well as sharing with us some precious memories.

How better to end the concert than a Collection of george’s best loved Beatles compositions? “Piggies” is a Group of alternative musicians assembled especially for this occasion with the intention of presenting these familiar Classics in more modern dressing whilst retaining the heart and soul of the originals. On Lead Guitar, James Sedwards, voted 2nd in the first guitar riffathon by legends jimmy Page and Brian May, of avant-jazz-rockers Nought. On Piano is Tim Croston of “Meanwhile…back in Communist Russia” an experimental post-rock band championed by the late great John Peel (who also called James his “Idol” !)
Overall, the Concerts promise to be a feast of styles and flavours spanning the globe with not a bad cover or fake moustache in sight!

Organised by and for, but not reserved to, devoted George Harrison fans this event has been curated with a lot of love and no funding to rejoice in the man and his music. We hope you will help us make it a NIGHT TO REMEMBER,
The Exhibition is in 7 parts - George ‘s lucky number was 7 - and so we attempt to spotlight some of the interesting facets of his life.

“When we was Fab” covers the early years with the Beatles On display are several artefacts from the period including George ‘s iconic heart shaped sunglasses from August 67 San Francisco.

“The Inner Light” highlights the journey most important to George himself, his Spiritual Quest. Here we highlight the importance of India to George as this was the catalyst. On display will be the sitar George purchased in Bombay in 1966 and which he subsequently used for practice.

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” some of the most memorable Beatle tunes were composed by George whilst staying in the background and he went on to release the most successful solo Beatle album as well as several other albums throughout the years. He also formed his own “Dark Horse” record lable and was a consummate and hard working Musician who worked on a huge number of projects with other Artistes. On display an accoustic Jazz Guitar which belonged to George - still with his original strings…

“Save The World” The very first Charity Concert was organised by George in 1971 - the Concert for Bangladesh. He also founded his own Charity in 1973 “The Material World Charitable Foundation” . His kindness and generosity was unparalleled and this section attempts to shed some light on this endearing aspect of George ‘s personality with signed artefacts from the period.

“What is Life” As George often referred to himself as a Gardener this cannot be ignored. He restored the Buildings and Gardens of his fairytale neo gothic Victorian mansion himself and his original dark Horse Tour jacketof 1974, which will be on display, was a favourite clothing staple in the garden .

“Dream Away” HandMade Films was formed by George to produce “Life of Brian” . He went on to produce several successful and quirky films with his business partner, Denis O ‘Brien. He is credited with having saved the British Film Industry from decline and signed items, posters and memorabilia will explore this lesser known area.

“Its What You Value” George was a fan of Monty Python, of George Formby and Formula One Racing. He had a passion for fast cars and loved a cup of tea! One of the fabulous items on display is a 1928 Gibson Banjolele which belonged to George and on which he is said to have recorded an entire album ‘s worth of George Formby classics for himself.

The Exhibition runs for 7 weeks only being organised with lots of love and no funding. Please help us make it a success in memory of George - one of the greatest Musicians, Composers and Humanitarians the world will ever have produced.

I knew it, I knew it! I betcha he's got an album's worth of Bob as well! I wonder if any of the Formby music George recorded will be being piped into the display area, during.

Thanks for the mention - our original idea was to open a museum For George -unfortunately with no funds these were the best we could manage. It would be nice if some Museums round the world would take note and then maybe the Exhibition could travel - and maybe the Concerts too! The music is going to be spectacular, with absolutely everyone wearing their hearts on their sleeves For George. Only one Star in this firmament - George.

Yes this is Dhani's Birthday too. No George Formby will not be piped - what we will start the evening off will be George's first solo composition - Wonderwall ... but to know more you all need to come! Throw caution to the four winds... this will happen once only

1st August 2009 The magnificent Concert Room all cream and gold with its £1/4 million venetian glass chandelier -a fitting setting to play the music George made and loved. Two shows with Artistes "some of them flew thousands of miles and even cancelled a few gigs to be here - and no one is getting paid for anything..." George Harrison 1st August 1971!

Musicians are flying in to Liverpool from across the world to honour 'The Quiet Beatle'.

On Saturday 1 August two unique concerts in tribute to George Harrison will take place in St George's Hall.

Artists from New York, India and Italy will be performing songs which span George's career - from the hits he penned for The Beatles including Here Comes the Sun and Something, right through to his Indian influenced work.

The concerts celebrate the start of a special free exhibition, also held at the Hall, which will see the world's biggest collection of George Harrison memorabilia in the city.

To tie in with his lucky number seven, there will be seven parts, each looking at a different aspect of his life. These include 'When we was Fab' which covers the early years of the Beatles and 'It's What You Value' which highlights some of George's favourite things including Monty Python, George Formby and Formula One motor racing.

The concerts and exhibition have been arranged by fans' group 'For George'. Denise Theophilus who is part of the group said: "Everyone working on these projects believe not enough has been done to pay tribute to one of the greatest musicians and humanitarians of all time, but the exhibition and the concert will be a great start.

"The musicians from Italy and the US are paying their own air fares simply because they want to be part of these wonderful celebrations for George.

"The concerts are going to take place in the stunning Concert Room and there is no where else we would want to showcase the music George made and loved.

"We want the maximum number of fans to come and see these fabulous musicians, especially because all the profits will be donated to George's own charity - The Material World Charitable Fund.

"It will be a fantastic event and one that no Beatles fan should miss!"

Those taking part in the concerts include New York's Jeff Slate who will be playing a special acoustic set, Ray Bernard and Karen Shutt will play the music they performed for George at his home and Gaurav Mazumdar will perform a classical piece of Indian music which has been composed specially for this occasion.

Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Warren Bradley, said: "George's musical brilliance played a key part in the closing stages of Liverpool's Capital of Culture celebrations when thousands sang along to Here Comes the Sun as it played out across the Waterfront.

"St. George's Hall is a magnificent venue to host these two fantastic tribute events, and the concert itself will be a great way to kick-start a Beatles themed month as August will also see Beatles Week take place and of course the Mathew Street Festival."

TWO special concerts were held in Liverpool in tribute to former Beatle George Harrison.

The concerts took place at St George’s Hall on the anniversary on the original 1971 Concert for Bangladesh that was organised by the late Harrison in aid of the refugees of East Pakistan.

Artists from New York, India and Italy, including friends of the star, performed songs he wrote throughout his career and some of his favourite pieces of music.

They included Beatles hits such as Here Comes the Sun and Something, through to his Indian influenced work.

Performers included Sir Frankie Crisp and the Friars, The Piggies, Ray Bernard, Karen Shutt and Jeff Slate.

Sir Frankie Crisp and the Friars opened with the song Bangladesh and played hits from each of his solo albums.

Gaurav Mazumdar, who was George’s friend and disciple of esteemed sitarist Ravi Shankar, also played at the two concerts on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Ray Bernard and Karen Shutt played music by George Formby, who was one of the legend’s heroes and Gaurav Mazumdar performed a classical piece of Indian music, which was composed specially for the occasion.

To tie in with his lucky number seven, both concerts were split into seven parts, each looking at a different aspect of his life.

They started with the early years with the Beatles and included highlights of some of George’s favourite things such as Monty Python, George Formby and Formula One motor racing.

At the end of the concerts all performers took to the stage to sing My Sweet Lord.

The shows launched the opening of a seven-week exhibition, showing off the largest selection of Harrison’s memorabilia in the city.

The concerts and exhibition have been arranged by fans’ group For George as a special one-off event.

Denise Theophilus, who is part of the group, said: “It went fantastically and all the people were doing it for the love of George.

“Sometimes it’s a difficult world but it’s to show George came from a very humble background but he achieved something beyond his wildest dreams. It is to give hope to all of us and to young people.”

The exhibition is free and is open every day at St George’s Hall from 10am until 4.30pm.

It includes lyrics, some of his outfits and signed photographs.

Denise said: “It is to let people learn more about George, things that they didn’t really know.

“Liverpool should be proud that she had such a wonderful son.”
