Strawberry Fields
Children's home made famous by Beatles closes
By Matthew Jones Tue May 31, 8:43 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - A British children's home immortalized in the Beatles hit "Strawberry Fields Forever" closes on Tuesday after 69 years of looking after Liverpool's disadvantaged youngsters.
The Salvation Army said all the children had left the Strawberry Field home and childcare provision at the Beaconsfield Road site ended today.
No decision has been made on the fate of the home or its iconic wrought iron gates that became well-known to thousands of Beatles fans after the song was released in 1967.
"A few administrative staff will stay on for the short term to wrap everything up over the next couple of months," a spokeswoman for the Christian charity told Reuters.
Lennon used to visit the home as a boy to play with childhood friends in its grounds. He modified the name to make it flow better for the song.
The period leading up to penning the tune was a time of upheaval for Lennon, who had triggered a backlash when he claimed the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus." His marriage to first wife Cynthia was also going through a difficult patch.
A number of interesting recording techniques were used, including vari-speed and tapes played backwards.
The first recording used an acoustic guitar, which Lennon was not satisfied with. A subsequent track was dubbed with cellos and trumpets.
The song was released as a single with "Penny Lane" and reached number one in the United States but only number two in the British charts.
The Salvation Army said the home was being closed as part of Social Services national policy of seeking smaller, family-based units for childcare compared with large residential institutions.
(I hope this isn't a double post. I looked all over the board first.)

It would be great if some nice rich Beatles fan would come to the rescue!
It may make a fine Beatles museum, though I've unfortunately never been there. I hope I get to see it before it changes too much.

Yeah I hope someone can rescue it.... maybe Yoko?? It was obviously a special place for John..... I dunno... I think there is not a single human being who doesn't have one of those special places where they can just go and..... be who they are and think...... and to me at least Strawberry Fields seemed like that place for John.... so I hope they can save it.....

Man, I wish I had a bucketfull of money. Either a Beatles museum or a B&B would be great! Or how about a Beatles-themed B&B? I'd make a killing...
I, too, hope that I get to see it the way it is now before somebody tries to change it.

Well the whole point was that it was a place for orphanages, and the fact that there was only 3 left is pretty damn good, so they've done their job as far as I can see...
But yeah being there for 68 yrs is a might long time tho...and it is a very speical place, I've been there several times and one year (1998) they even opened up their grounds for the bands to play there during beatle week! So, that was a very speical treat and event I will always remember!

Something tasteful needs to be done with it that would fit in with what the place meant to John and thus the world.
Hotels, Museums, attractions???
God I hope not!
Yoko should set up her own childrens centre on the site or something.
I also think they should get those front gates into storage ASAP.
Now there are no staff there it won't be long before some....entrepreneurhelps themselves. It's happened before.
