Default McCartney\'s wife accepts damages from UK paper

I believe this exonerates MRS. McCartney:

McCartney's wife accepts damages from UK paper

LONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Former Beatle Paul McCartney's new wife, Heather
Mills, has accepted 50,000 pounds ($76,000) in damages from a British
newspaper which claimed she was being investigated over charity money, her
lawyer said on Wednesday.

The money was offered to settle her libel claim after a May 12 article in the
Sunday Mirror alleged the Charity Commission was investigating her over money
collected for an Indian earthquake amputees' appeal in 2001.

Former model Mills, who married McCartney in an Irish castle in June, turned
to raising money for the limbless after losing her left leg below the knee in
a motorcycle accident in 1993.

More recently she and McCartney have campaigned against landmines.

In a statement, Mills's lawyer said she planned to donate the damages money
to the charity Adopt-A-Minefield UK.

She was "pleased the Sunday Mirror has recognised that the allegations were
unfounded and that her reputation has been vindicated," it said.

"She is also pleased that she may now concentrate on the important issue of
her charity work instead of wasting an enormous amount of valuable time and
energy defending her charity and herself," it added.

The paper will also pay Mills's legal costs, the statement said.

A spokesman for Trinity Mirror, publisher of the Sunday Mirror, declined to
comment.

Actually, this was a settlement out of court and it appears more than likely her lawyer told her to accept their offer and run because she wasn't going to win it *in* court.

This was nothing more than a nuisance lawsuit. If you read her interivew in the New York magazine, she was expecting to "drain" the Sunday Mirror of all their funds; it was "huge. HUGE!"

I don't see where there's an agreement for an apology or retraction from the paper itself. All said, this is rather a paltry sum of money for a libel claim. Far from "huge!"

It does not exonerate her AT ALL...as was said, this was an out of court settlement because she was probably advised that she couldn't win otherwise.

I'm still not so sure she's aboveboard with this thing...

Is there a reason a two year old news article was brought back up? This settlement was over two years ago!

The article was new when fab4girl posted it; it's dated 8/21, and she posted it 8/22/02. Someone else was apparently searching through the archives and decided to bring it back up. There's nothing wrong with that if there's a new development to the story, but more often than not, bringing up old topics confuses people. Best just to let them lie.

No, Naomi, fab4grl posted that article two years ago. She has never posted since, either. All the posts prior to twovirgins are from two years ago, that's what I am talking about. (No offense, twovirgins, believe me, but was there a reason you brought this back up?)
