Is anyone here a fan of The Clash?
I was wondering if anyone here liked The Clash. They're probably my 2nd favorite band.

Moving this over to Not Only A Northern Song, which is where we discuss other groups - hope you find some other Clash fans.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">If you're interested in buying a cd, check out London Calling. It's probably their best album. If you just want single songs, say by downloading them off of a P2P filesharing network, I suggest "Train in Vain", "London Calling", or "Rock the Casbah" for starters. The first 2 songs I mentioned are both off London Calling, so theres another good reason to get the cd.

I really like the songs "London Calling" and "Rock the Casbah", though I haven't heard a lot of their other stuff.

I'm such a nerd, I'm not sure if I want to be a Beatle or member of The Clash for Halloween. Maybe I'll be one one half of the day and another for the remainder of the day. Once again feel free to call me a rock and roll nerd cuz I know I am!

Re: Is anyone here a fan of The Clash?
I was a HUGE Clash fan going back to 1979 when a friend of mine woke me up to them. I got to see them three times: in 1980 on the London Calling tour; in 1981 at Bonds in NYC; and in 1982 on the Combat Rock tour. Saw their movie "Rude Boy" 30 times and then i finally got it on VHS. A great band that really knocked my socks off. My fave song of theirs is "Groovy Times."
Yours?

Re: Is anyone here a fan of The Clash?
I think Sandinista is one of the best records ever, its a triple album packed with great political gems like The Magnificant Seven, The Call Up, Rebel Waltz, The Crooked Beat, Washington Bullets and Hitsville UK, its an amazing album!

My GOD, you are SO lucky!!!! I wish I was around to see them, especially during their Bonds residence in NYC. As for my favorite song, well I'm quite torn to be honest, just like with The Beatles. I love them all, but London Calling and Complete Control are probably my two most favorite songs by them. London Calling (the album) and Sandinista are like The Beatles' White Album and Abbey Road, their most brilliant albums near the end of their career. I love drawing parallels between them and the Beatles. The Lennon/McCartney and Strummer/Jones writing partnerships I think are the two greatest in rock and roll. And the fact that both groups had a main message and brilliant music for their fans makes me love each even more.

Re: Is anyone here a fan of The Clash?
I LOVE the Clash! I saw them open for the Who (!!) at Shea Stadium in 1982 -- at the time, my two other favorite bands besides the Beatles! Needless to say, I was pretty happy!
I was so sad when Joe Strummer died so suddenly...

Re: Is anyone here a fan of The Clash?
The Clash are awesome. The Sex Pistols were the image of the Punk revolution but the Clash and Ramones were the voice (tho i like all the S.P's too) 70's and 80' punk sounds great. now its just sad...I mean..Avril Lavigne is punk? I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find some decent Punk bands and songs but theres not the same energy and not as good enough music as when it started. I feel the same way about Hip hop. Great when it started, but now just awful.

Re: Is anyone here a fan of The Clash?
I love to share these two Clash stories...
in May 1981, on the 2nd of 16 nights at Bonds, when I felt like I was a part of history, I was the 10th person in (they counted everyone because fire laws) and I was right up front. Late in the show, I threw my white towel up to Joe to use - and omg, he did!! And I screamed, "Give it back! Give it back!" in vain. I even snapped a 110mm picture of the moment; how I knew to do that, I don't know. Maybe I'll post it here.
Bonds is now a Toys R Us store.
In September 1982, they were at the Orpheum in Boston (some of the show is on the 'From Here To Eternity' live album), I was smackdab at the front of the stage, right by Joe. During "Armageddon Time," I noticed his left bootlace was untied....so I tied it!
I also reached up with my left hand and put it on his right - and he didn't flinch or shake me off. It was very sweaty! I just wanted to make contact with greatness. All of this is documented in my journal.
They were a huge part of my life, but then....I lost interest in the band when Mick was tossed out in 1983 after the Us festival. But their music is timeless.
I strongly suggest watching the "Westway to the World" DVD.
And here's a decent site:
