Default Long & Winding Road on TV - Jan. 27th-31st

The five part special will air on STAR! TV in Canada!

The Beatles - A Long & Winding Road
Five part series airing nightly beginning Monday, January 27 - Friday, January 31 at 9pm ET/6pm PT
(Repeats at 2am ET)
The extensive story of four unlikely lads from Liverpool who rose to fame and fortune beyond their wildest dreams is presented over five nights on Startv in one-hour long episodes. The series documents their humble beginnings in the post-war city of Liverpool, the dodgy clubs of red-light district Hamburg, to a guest spot on the Ed Sullivan Show in America and subsequent popularity the world over. Interviews with the band, loved ones and colleagues, including their notorious manager Brian Epstein, reveal the strain that popularity played on the Fab Four both as friends and musicians. The early days of the band as a touring unit is well documented but the documentary also delves into their ground-breaking studio work of the late 1960s as well the recent death of George Harrison and the assassination of John Lennon in 1980.

Some information about the 'A Long and Winding Road' 5-part series, scheduled to air on Star! TV here in Canada:

The first episode, entitled: "The Beatles: A Long & Winding Road: Part 1: There Are Places I Remember (PG)" airs at 9:00 p.m. (EST) on January 27. The following brief description of the episode is provided: "In the beginning there was Liverpool. The Beatles' hometown was the catalyst for everything they would become. They were influenced by its humor, its people and its way of life."

The second episode, entitled: "The Beatles: A Long & Winding Road: Part 2: One & One & One is Three (PG)", airs at 9:00 p.m. (EST) on January 28. The following description is provided: "Their trials and tribulations in these early days would bond them together as a tight unit, loyal to each other and to their dream. This would be essential in later years if they were to weather the storm of Beatlemania."

The third episode, entitled: "The Beatles: A Long and Winding Road: Part 3: Hamburg & Herr Epstein (PG)" airs on January 29, also at 9:00 (EST). The following description is provided: "Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll... In 1960 four young lads from the port city of Liverpool found themselves in the biggest red-light district in Europe, with nothing to do but live out the ultimate music industry fantasy."

On January 29 at 9:00 p.m. (EST), the fourth episode, entitled: The Beatles: A Long & Winding Road: Part 4: Beatlemania (PG)" will air. The following description is provided: "And now here they are, THE BEATLES!!!!" With those words Ed Sullivan unleashed the greatest musical group in history upon the citizens of North America. Within one short year the Fab Four had gone from being a strictly British pop group, to being a worldwide phenomenon."

And finally, on January 31 at 9:00, the final episode, entitled: "The Beatles: A Long & Winding Road: Part 5: Love, Litigation & Let it Be (PG)" will air. The following description is provided: "When the Beatles stopped touring in 1966 many thought it was the end of the road for the lovable mop tops, but it was simply time for them to shift gears. The following years would be filled with an unmatched artistic growth that would transform them from a simple, albeit wildly successful pop-group, into four of the most enduring icons of the twentieth century."

I haven't found much else in the way of a description for the 5-part series (i.e. producer, etc.) on Star!'s website, however I have noticed (as you and others have noticed) that several e-tailers are advertising a DVD preorder for a box set with the same title, to be released on March 18, 2003. Some descriptions for the DVD include the following: "Join some special guests as they look back on The Beatles career in this 5 hour retrospective. Members of The Quarry Men (John Lennon's original band), The Beatles chauffeur, Alf Bicknell, Apple Records general manager Alistair Taylor, and Julia Bird (Lennon's sister) all plunder their memories for tales of the Fab Four."

and ...
"The dynamic tale of four working-class Liverpudlian lads who led a host of invading Brits and became rock royalty in the process is told on this expansive five-volume set that includes rare interviews with family, friends and members of John Lennon's first band, The Quarry Men."

It looks like Star! TV (and likely E! TV in the U.S.) will give us an exclusive advance viewing of the DVD.

Has this been on in the US? It sounds GREAT...but I haven't heard anything!

This seems to be the thing that BigLou posted info about a couple of weeks back that we initially thought might be the Anthology on DVD...it might be worth picking up these DVDs, it sounds really good!

anyone that is willing to tape it, I'd be happy to pay for all shipping costs and the tapes it would take to put it on...I'd really love to see them...and frankly this would be the only way I might see them relatively quickly....poor college students can't shell out 40-50 dollars for the DVDs

Hmmm, this sounds very much like the programme that is coming out on DVD in early March. There was a thread here about that one too; it was mistakenly thought to be the Anthology at first. I purchased the DVDs on amazon.com on New Year's Day. I can't watch it since I don't have the channel in question, but if someone sees it, I hope they post their feedback here @ Beatlelinks. Wasn't The Long & Winding Road the original working title of the Anthology?

I read that this morning in the Edmonton Sun, but it doesn't mention anything about it being on any other station other than Star! (unless E! buys the rights or something!)

For fans of the Rolling Stones:

"The Rolling Stones - Just for the Record is also five hour-long installments, each covering a decade in the lives of what's been called the world's greatest rock 'n' roll band. They will air from Sunday Feb. 16 to Thursday Feb. 20"

Source: Sun News Services; Edmonton Sun, Friday Jan 24, 2003

Likely on Star! as well, but I'll keep you posted!
