It didn't seem right to post the material without some sort of notice, but I knew that might actually draw some underage readers to the site. I'm not really sure how to password-protect the pages so only people who register with me as being of age can access them. (Besides, that might not help much, as they can easily lie.) I finally decided to post a simple warning: "Sexual content. Mature audiences only, please." (That way, the reader has to decide if she's mature enough to read it.) How do other webmasters handle this problem?

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">I think warnings are legally good for butt-covering. As Susan (in drag as Jim) pointed out, in practice warnings serve to bring readers TO material rather than keep them away from it. On the other hand, one can point to one's warning and say, "Hey, I didn't encourage them to come!" which would probably be enough to prevent a suit, even if everyone knows that warnings have the opposite effect. Thus, warnings are a win-win proposition for many people. Movies, TV, and CDs all benefit from them (and no doubt their creators chortle at the people who forced warnings onto these products in the first place).
I don't have anything on my website that I consider "mature" enough to require a warning; nor am I likely to, since such stuff bores me for the most part. However, I run the "Dark Humor" webring, and in the public description I say something to the effect of "Don't come here if you're easily offended." I put it up more to draw in the people attracted by such messages than to warn away the easily offended, since, quite frankly, I couldn't care less if someone gets offended. Actually, I enjoy it when someone's offended by something I wrote; it means I'm doing my job! (I get flamed with some regularity on several reviews I have posted on my site. You wouldn't believe how vicious fans of Les Miserables can be....)

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">The number of visits to individual chapters of my stories seems to be random, suggesting that people are reading the entire story and not just "reading the naughty bits." (I indicate which stories have sex scenes, but not which chapters they're in.) OTOH, some of the search strings that generate hits on my site are a bit crude. It's a little embarrassing actually; all of the words used in the search string might appear in one of my stories, but certainly not in the way some people search for them!

Rub,
You want MORE Beatle fiction. Read Rooftop Sessions. There you will find high caliber fiction and Susan does NOT accept any work she doesn't feel is good. The standards are high, so you will not be in short supply of Beatle themed fiction. No slash, no smut, no offense.

Re: Umm... Not sure if this is appropriate or not!
Hallo! Wow. So many responses. Yeah. I admit that I do like slash, and do occasionally read smut, but PLEASE don't think I'm a rabid pervert on the loose. I understand that here, I am alone in my little slashy opinion and I can understand that. ^_^ I do like other things too. As for now, I think I'll stay away from the smut for another 4-5 years, but, I'm still going to read slash that is much more appropriate for my age. And now it's off into writing-Beatley-Christmassy-English assignments!
Peace,

Re: Umm... Not sure if this is appropriate or not!
Kay, dear, I don't think anyone here thinks you are a "rabid little pervert." We all understand that some people like slash, even if not all of us do. I think the real concern here is that you're so considerably under age, and we are loath to point you in the direction of it, that's all...but if you find it on your own, more power to you. (And btw, while I definitely appreciate all of BB's wonderful plugs for my site, I very well know that Rooftop Sessions is not the be all and end all of fanfic sites...of course you should look around for whatever floats your boat!) I'm glad, though, that you are writing some stories of your own and that they are not slash!
The other real concern here is that we're all worried about your comments regarding wanting to die and stuff...but I (and I am sure others as well) am glad you came back and seem to be okay...just remember that we care about you here, okay?

Rub,
We are WORRIED about you. The reason I recommended Rooftop Sessions is because if you want to read a variety of Beatle fan fic, it is one good place to start.
I worry about your death and mental health issues. You say you think people are against you. We aren't. We are worried about you and want to be sure you are getting the HELP! you need.

Re: Umm... Not sure if this is appropriate or not!
Having spent months, off and on, editing my recently deceased cousin's fanfic for archival purposes, I now have a much better understanding of the term "slash".
No, RubberSoul, dear, I will not direct you to any "slash". That stuff is too "grown-up" for me (and I'm using the term "grown-up" very, very loosely here), and I won't give out urls or links to anyone I suspect may be a minor. Even over the internet, that would be considered "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" and is an arrestable offence in these parts. (Local news has reported 2 similar arrests in the past 3 weeks.)
And you may not be a "rabid pervert" now (how could you be, at the ripe old age of 13??), but the fact is you are what you eat. Heart attack victims all over the country bemoan decades too late their addictions to fatty foods, emphysema victims are trying to sue tobacco companies - and you will one day become more like what you are filling your mind and imagination with.
Go to Rooftop Sessions, RubberSoul, and start filling in those little grey cells with healthier fanfic.

Re: Umm... Not sure if this is appropriate or not!
I took your advice. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next issue of Rooftop Sessions!
And about the whole "checking in" thing, I have a FANTASTIC idea. I shall start a diary (hopefully remembering to write in it), and I'll put the URL in my signature so you guys can go there to read up! I shall do that right now! Muahaha!

Ah, Sleepy, my esteemed co-mod...you are eloquent and wise!
I could not agree with you more...both in your opinion of slash and your reasons for not giving information about it to minors!
Well said!

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Beatle Neil, I'm going to make this one post and then you get to decide whether you want to stay as a contributing member of these forums or not.
Sleepy, my wife, told me about your post attacking another member here because of their views. This is not the place to air out your agressive tendencies. I will not stand for it from you or anyone else for that matter. We are here to not degrade anyone, in any way, shape or form.
You will make a public apology to my wife here. You had no right to post what you did. If you cannot bring yourself to admit your errors, I will have a talk with Jerry.
The ball is now in your court. What will you do?

Re: Umm... Not sure if this is appropriate or not!
Everyone lay off her. So she likes slash. So what?
People would tell you (back in the day) that it was awful to even admit to liking the Beatles.
To each his/her own.
Also, sorry, but I don't know any slash sites. It's not exactly somethin' I go lookin' for!
