Default Another serious question to Original Beatles fans

Okay, we've covered the "bigger than Jesus topic" on another post. I thought I'd post another "serious" question. Okay...to those who remember the Beatles break up, what was your initial reaction? Did you care that they had split. Did you know they were going to break up before reading Paul's statement in the newspaper or hearing it on the radio? What was the general public's reaction (i.e. people around you--classmates, family members, friends etc). Was it really talked about for days and days afterward. I once read this story in a Beatles book called "An American Generation Remembers the Beatles, there was a story in it where this person didn't go to school on the day he found out the Beatles broke up. Someone else ended up wearing black to school because the Beatles had broken up, it was a sign of mourning. Was it really that sad, shocking? Or was it expected? Of course we all know who the blame was back then--Yoko. Did you believe that? (Be honest ) And did you ever think they'd get together again? Or did you think "The Beatles are over, they shouldn't get back together." (Remember this would be 1969-71)--did everyone want the Beatles to reunite, it sounded like it from what I've read. But what was it really like then?

I my little out. I was very disappointed and thought it meant no more Beatle songs. Glad to say there were post-Beatle solos.

On Apollo 13, there was a girl who wouldn't come out of her room because of the break up. That's my favorite part of the movie.

This week, the Beatles greatest hits album, 1, is at number seventy-five on the USA album charts. Wingspan: Hits and History by Paul McCartney is at number seventy-six.

In all honesty, it didn't phase me that much. Life goes on. I must admit that at that time I was a sr in HS and thinking about more important things that lay ahead for me.
they affected me more in my younger years (mid-60s).

HS SR. in 1970? Should we assume you were more worried about not getting sent to VietNam?
How intense were the antiWar demonstrations really? As well as the antiWar sentiment.

My dad graduated from high school in 1970. That was when the "lottery system" began, he remembers it well. He didn't go to Vietnam because he got a high number (somewhere in the 290s). He was lucky...

I had an idea back then that the greatest band in the world was crumbling. I tried not to think about as much as possible. When the news broke, I did believe Yoko was the main reason.
All through the 70's, I kept telling myself that they would reunite, back it was all in vain. As the 70's came to a close, I began to think about them getting together in the 80's.

I was number 156 that year, not that high, but they took up to number 125. I would have had a college deferment anyway as I ended up spending freshman year at American University in Washington, DC. During that time in DC there were demonstrations at the white house, and several "civil disobedience" demonstrations which consisted of sitting in the streets to stop traffic, and cripple the government. The crowd across the street from the white house was disbursed by vans pulling up and soldiers pouring out of them (maybe national guard). One time at the traffic circle near the campus there were helicopters flying above to disburse the crowd. I never saw it escalate into real violence. Most of that happened earlier and a little before my time. Neil Young's song "Ohio" was big at the time. Yes, Tim, the anti-war sentiment was huge that year still.

The break-up was not unexpected, but I held out hope until the end that it wouldn't happen. It was terribly sad for me and I found myself crying over it often. I was also kind of angry that "outsiders" had interfered and contributed to the break-up. I'll admit that until John's death, I believed they'd re-unite one day.

Yeah, mine too. I also loved the cool 1966 Dodge Coronet in a parking lot scene.

me too. my draft number was 301-the same as my Beatlelinks number.
I didn't believe they would break up forever...unfortunately they did.
and since 1980, they never can.

Thanks for the posting Kristi--
my reaction was that it certainly was dis-
appointing, but in thinking of the Beatles as
"people"--(like us) I learned to respect
particularly John & Paul's wishes to *understand* that there had to be a time to
simply move on. There was a bit of a kind of
an "unsaid darkness" that seemed to surround
the post-Let it Be time with alot of my friends and musician pals commenting on that-
perhaps a little spooky in a way, but much
less spooky in my opinion when you think
that it was really "Abbey Road" which was
their last effort. I myself was so addicted
to each "next song" that came out, that I
was definitely dissapointed in that way. But luckily, we had some phenomenal solo efforts by each and every one of them in their after-
math, so I think in the end the concept of
"it is what it is" all seems to make sense
in The Beatle's case as especially fine works that read like a rock alphabet in a way... The thing that was really "shocking"
to me as opposed to their breakup was John's death... I mean that disturbed the whole
alphabet-- --j.c.

For some reason, I believe the Beatles might have reunited if John hadn't died. I have the book "Beatles, book of lists" and it says that they all agreed to make a documentary called the Long and Winding Road, but was cut short after John's death. The Documentary later became known as the Beatles Anthology. I don't know how accurate this is though.

And the sad thing about that, is it simply
"could've" happened if indeed John was still
here. Granted it may not have, but it could've nonethaless, with many opportunites
if he were still here--(God rest his soul).

I wasn't a fan yet when they actually broke up - I got into the Beatles in 1974 - but I remember all the wild "will they or won't they" rumors that were always flying around in the mid-70's about supposed reunions.

I think I'm weird (no cracks, please!), but I never really wanted them to get back together. Maybe that's because I never really experienced them "together" in the first place, but I never longed for it like most of the fans in the 70's seemed to. I liked the fact that I might get up to FOUR new albums in a year by various Beatles rather than just one and I liked that all four of them were now able to express their individual styles without as many limitations.

When John was killed, I was very sad that the world lost such a fascinating person so young, but it never once crossed my mind to think "Oh, now the Beatles will never get back together."

As I said, I know I'm probably in the minority on this one!

I sort of agree with you Rellevart. I don't know if I would feel the same about a "new, inproved" Beatles but it would have been pretty cool to find out. I could be wrong ya know?

To speculate:
On one hand, they were a legend of the times and spearheaded and foretold a cultural revolution. Besides the ill feelings at the end, they also, I believe, did not want to tarnish the legend by being something less.

On the other hand, it's possible, had they gotten back together and being the innovators that they were, that they could have taken popular music even further.......
