Default Beatles performance on Letterman 2/9

From Beatles Collectors.com:

To mark the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' first visit to the Ed Sullivan Show, CBS's Late Show with David Letterman will present a performance from that historic 1964 broadcast on Monday, February 9 on the CBS television network.

On the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' landmark first visit to CBS's The Ed Sullivan Show and the Ed Sullivan Theater, CBS's Late Show with David Letterman will mark the event by presenting one of the Fab Four's performances from that historic appearance, Monday, Feb. 9 (11:35 PM-12:37 AM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. The LATE SHOW will present The Beatles from that Feb. 9, 1964 "Ed Sullivan Show" performing their classic I Want to Hold Your Hand, which has rarely been seen in its entirety since its first broadcast.

During their first visit to the United States, The Beatles made their American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show on Feb. 9, 1964, performing on the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater in front of hundreds of fans. The show was watched by an estimated 73 million viewers, making it one of the most watched broadcasts in television history.

I never watch the Late Show because it's on a school night (man I gotta get out of that place, and soon!), but I'll definitely stay up and watch the Beatles!! I'd stay up till 4 AM if I had to, as long as it involves the Beatles!

This is good, I had been wondering for awhile if CBS would not see the significance of the Ed Sullivan Theatre in the 40 year anniversary. No doubt this performance, although seen by many of us Beatle Fans a few times, will be better than the Grammy's Tribute! I have been watching my DVD of the Ed Sullivan Shows all this past week along with the new DVD of the first trip to America.

Well .........at least they did "something " . Although, i feel, they did the "easiest " thing they could think of . Just "re-airing" the original Ed Sullivan show song would have been a good "start " . I feel, CBS should have gone all out, and did a full blown Television entertainment special . Heck..........they seem to find money and time to make all these other pieces of crap they call "entertainment ", on their network don't they ? I think Cbs dropped the ball here on this celebration gang !

Well, thats the thing about David Letterman, hes really an old softie I guess. When former Tonight Show host Jack Paar died a couple of weeks ago, Dave paid tribute to him. And Jay Leno? Said nada. Dave has always been proud that he broadcasts from that historic theater.Guess its asking too much for Paulie and Ritchie to show, ya think?

Don't know as if I'll have the stamina to stay up for this (and all the other stuff on the show), but I'll definitely watch my DVDs!

For those that missed it (you also missed Dr. Phil on there!), Dave touted it the whole show, mentioning in the monolouge it was 40 years ago, right there in the theather (which drew great reaction from the audience). He said the last time the Sullivan theater audience screamed so much was when a rat ran through it.
At the end of the show, Dave got to introduce Ed introducing the Beatles. Of course, he plugged the new DVDs as well. You could tell he was happy to have this on his show, and what host wouldnt want the Fabs as guests, on videotape or not? Also, the band played Beatles tunes all night. AS you may know, bassist Will Lee is with "The Faux Four" in New York, a grat tribute band.

I was never a Jay Leno fan and find him extremely annoying.

On the plus side, Letterman will be featuring the world's number one band, the Beatles!

I was disappointed in Leno's show. Although I enjoyed the band's Beatle covers, I was hoping there'd be more retro Beatle footage and more Beatle stories.

Just saw Letterman, it made me happy, and I cried again, even after all these years.

I saw it too and I enjoyed all of it, except I'm a bit disappointed that he didn't do his annual Top 10 list, but oh well!

I'm really glad that Dave acknowledges the Beatles' anniversary on the Ed Sullivan show, he did the same thing during the 30th (with a mention and a Top Ten list) and this time with a mention, dvd "showing", and the performance of I Want To Hold Your Hand. I guess that Dave's a Beatle fan

Watched it last night, one of the first time's I've watched Dave. It'd have been nice if Dave had had a guest or two recalling where they were when they saw the Fabs perfom for the first time 40 years ago, but still the tribute was pretty good nonetheless.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">It's actually "The Fab Faux" (greatest tribute band name EVER!). But yeah, they're excellent. They were supposed to play on Letterman last night, but the producers decided the "real thing" was even better. Works for me.

I'm not a Letterman fan. I find him to be a crude, obnoxious twit "BUT" I did watch him last night just to see what I saw 40 years ago. It was great.

I think the funniest thing Letterman said last night was "It was 40 years ago tonight, on this very stage, that Ed Sullivan introduced the Beatles to America. On this very stage. Now look what you get." haha...In all the years Letterman has been on t.v., I think that was the cleverest thing that he has ever said.

Well, just let me say..........They could have done more ! Why they didn't arrange the entire show around The Beatles 40th was a real kick in the ass on cbs's part . Dr. Phil and that Snowboarder could have been on ANY TIME . February 9th tho,was SPECIAL in Beatle world, and THAT particular network and theater in particular .
They could have aired more original Beatles footage..................Had REAL people on as guests that "Were actually there" for The Beatles performance in 1964 . Had a Beatles Tribute band performing all nite instead of the regular "house band " . Hell, i could have put together a better show than what lame thing they actually did. And they stuck The Actual Beatles performance at the last 5 minutes of the show as well . That just sucks . I was not very happy with how CBS handled this entire 40th event . They did the absolute "least" amount they could in my estimation . Not Pleased at all .

You know, when I think about it, Sgt. Salt has a good point. like that song, Is That All There Is?
C'mon, most of Dave's viewers are baby boomers, and how hard would it be in NY to find some people who were actually THERE, at that same theater, 40 years ago. As I watched the screaming fans, I wondered what they looked like now, and what they would say if they were interviewed today. I bought the DVD, The Beatles First USA Visit, and it's packed with behind the scenes stuff. Anyway, I'm not a big Letterman fan, and now I'm REALLY not one, still.
