1993 Anthology Director\'s Cut--anyone seen it?
I'm anxiously awaiting for this to arrive via a trade I made, approx 50 audio for this 10 disc DVD set. Should be here sometime this week. In the meantime I'm scouring the web looking for info on it, what I've read (which isn't that much) it sounds great. More & longer interviews. I won't be able to trade this as I don't have a DVD burner, maybe on the next computer--not sure if this one is good enough to upgrade. Has anyone seen this yet? Is it as good as it sounds? Info Info Info!!!
Maybe I should go watch to official one now, I have 2 copies of that!!

Re: 1993 Anthology Director\'s Cut--anyone seen it?
Yes, I've had the set since October, and I love it. My favorite part is George's discussion of his first acid trip with John. He goes into much further detail about his experience, and enthuses on its positive aspects. He even reveals the name of the dentist who slipped them the LSD! Also, you will get to hear the famous "hums" ending to "A Day In The Life" (very underwhelming, though). There's quite of bit of unused performance footage (I love the part where John dances with Helen Shapiro at a TOTP performance). There are negative comments about Yoko that did not meet her approval and were axed.
You'll get to see the unused opening that was changed to the Help! opening (thank goodness). The opening on the Director's Cut begins with a head that is made up of a mixture of all four Beatles' faces, and it's not attractive. The Beatles are the most gorgeous men on earth, but putting their faces together looks very weird. Then, the "face" separates into the four individuals. I don't like it. I do like the concept of the liver birds (you'll see what I mean).
I think you're in for a special experience. It is essential viewing for any Beatle Maniac!

You can find them on e-bay. Look under Beatles DVD's. I've been thinking about picking up a copy myself.

Director's Cut--anyone seen it?
"Where can I find a copy of this gem?"
try this:
http://www.kerrazy-torrents.com/index.php?showforum=50
scroll down for disc 3. reportedly, disc 4 should show up soon as well.
there are posts in the above link with people asking about Discs 1 & 2 and there was some mention that they're available on alt.binaries.beatles (see Microsoft Outlook-->News groups).
Discs 1-3 are in available in MPG format through WinMX.
The first 2 may still be available here: http://www.everydayjones.com/
but the site is TERRIBLE. many of the features don't work and... anyway its poorly run. Disc 1 and 2 may have been taken off there already.
Short Review: i've watched the first three and i LOVE it!! someone said it was on ebay for about $50 or so?? That would be a bargain for these discs!
Long Review on some of the differences so far (discs 1-3):
Some parts you can tell this is very much a "director's cut" b/c certain bits aren't as smooth as they were in the official. there are a few cheesy bits that i'm glad they took out. the worst one IMO is this mesh of the Beatles faces that Child of Nature mentioned. Those guys were good looking! but a mesh of their faces creates one ugly lookin' dude. I'll try to capture a picture of it and post it. It didn't seem that bad at first but the more i look at it the uglier it gets.
At the end of disc 2 there is a wierd video where the Liverbirds atop the Liver Building come to life and then fly to London. i guess signifying the Beatles making the jump from their home town to their new home in the Big Time. The drawings of the birds look unfinished though- its just the bare drawing, no colors or fill-in.
something funny i've noticed. these were some of the first interviews so the guys will say things that are factually incorrect- but I don't recall these mistakes being made in the Official Anthology- a more accurate comment was made about the same topic. these are VERY minor innacurracies mind you and nothing terrible or horribly wrong; for example, they are talking about how they got the name Beatles. and Paul mentions the movie "The Wild Ones". Paul says "having seen Wild Ones recently, all the guys are called 'Beetles'". in the movie clip they show, "the beetles" is obviously the nickname given to the women in the motorcycle gang- not "the guys". corrent me if i'm wrong but in the Official release, doesn't either George or Paul correctly make a referrence to "the beetles" being the girls in the movie?
another one is Paul commenting that their appearence on the Ed Sullivan Show is still the #1 highest audience in the US. Actually, even in 1993, it was about 3rd or so. The other mistake i noticed was from George but I've completly forgotten what it was.
The biggest difference i've noticed is in the archivel footage. for one thing it seems like all the archival footage has a counter on the screen. a watermark that displays the hour:minute:second:millisecond. I mean nearly EVERY video has this. I don't recall that being the case in the official version but i could be wrong.
also seems like some of the archival clips last longer too. I've seen the official version twice (on VHS, then on DVD) and now with this third version there are still a number of video clips that i didn't recognize. I have a HUGE collection of videos as well but there are still bits that are *new* to me.
another difference-- Neil Aspinal... i swear these are the SAME interviews only in the Director's Cut he isn't wearing a hat. the hat may have been digitally added later just to cover the glare off his head :D j/k
Poor Neil, unlike "the Boys", life didn't let him keep his hair :(
Its been a while since i've seen the official version (since the DVDs came out) so I hesitate to go into too much authoritative detail about what's different between the two versions. The above comparisons is an attempt though.
I'm sure Child of Nature would be able to put up a much better review b/c i haven't even 7 of the 10 discs as of yet!

Director's Cut--anyone seen it?
Here's the "ugly dude" Beatle-morph i mentioned. in my experience, its not that bad at first but like i said, the more ya look at it the uglier it gets IMO:

I've never used this image hosting site before so hopefully this works.
I'm still getting used to this new forum! so i don't know how to make a link or just show the picture in this post. But the ol' Cut'n'Paste should work...

Excellent posts, HariScruff00!
Here is a link to all of the liner notes that come with the set. It gives you a detailed comparison between the official Anthology and the Director's cut.

Don't Ebay
Don't buy any boots off ebay. It's extremely illegal. Report people that are selling them. It's a crime. They download them off the net for free, burn them, then sell them. There are people out there that would gladly help you. Join a tree, trade, b&p, or, the easiest way, download them from easytree.org

I had seen some sets on a record fair, but if I am not mistaken the include only 5 dvd's. Maybe I looked wrong. They looked very nice, but I am still not realy convinced I should get them, since I've got the official set already. I've saved the 100 euro/ dollar's, to buy some otehr things.

I picked up the 5-DVD digipack version on Saturday (perhaps this is the one you saw, Legs?) for £50 and I consider it great value for money (especially considering I almost picked up the inferior 10-DVD copy for the same price in December...). The packaging is excellent and from what I've seen so far, the quality of the 'Anthology' itself is also excellent considering it probably originated from VHS. I must mention that as the DVDs are NSTC, the picture will look slightly off-register if you're watching on a PAL-only TV and also, the archive footage is still at an early stage, hence the visible timecodes and the slightly inferior quality compared to the sources which were used in the finished series - the interview material, however, is superb.

Rather confusing isn't it Paolo? Yes I must have seen the 5-DVD digipack, I almost picked it up Saturday, weren't you by chance at the same Beatles fair in Holland?
Maybe next time, but I still wasn't sure if it was really worth it since I got the official set already. How much is £50 these days, about 100 euro's?

Nah, I wasn't in Holland, though I'd like to have been, considering just how poor the fair I went to was... I believe that £50 works out at about 75 Euros, Legs.
