I know a girl whose autistic and she has no social skills whatsoever- some thing that we know was definitely not John's problem. People who are autistic, from what I've read, can't tell you really broad and important stuff, like 2+2=4, but can remember really random data out of nowhere. Me Mam says this is bogus, and as she is a special-ed teacher, she would probably know, but I still think it applies a bit (the girl I know remembers everyone's name. But JWL- NO WAY!

Well, it's not necessarily "random" exactly.... but the way I kind of understand it is that they get fixated on a certain thing and it imprints. The little girl at school who is borderline autistic gets fixated on certain things...like the one day when all she said was "Bye!...Bye...Bye!...bye-bye..." for an HOUR. I wanted to take a sedative by lunchtime that day, I tell you. It takes a LOT of patience to deal with that.

I have joined temporarily to ask why you are are so appalled at the idea of John Lennon having autism. When I came across your posts I was amazed at your ignorance about autism. People with this disorder are very different to one another no two people with it are exactly the same. Around 25% have an added learning disability but that doesn't mean they can't be talented. High funtioning autism isn't always the "rain man" they can actually seem very "normal" because they can get help with stimming. Notice how the rain man will uses a stim called echolailia? Which is when he repeats tv shows to calm him? There are different therapies out such as ABA to help them cope so as they don't to stim as much. Any repetitive behaviour is called a stim. John Lennon did have repetitive hand movements which was not caused by drugs. Professionals in the field of autism agree that John lennon had certain characteristics which are indicative of Autism special ed teachers hardly know anything about autism so we can rule them out as professionals. I can promise you that people from the Autistic community do not wish to find ways of being closer to John, they are merely bringing autism out into the open because people like to ignore it and pretend it's not there. My Son was diagnosed with Autism last year and he is three now, I really hope that by the time he is grown up he wont be misunerstood. Watch the youtube video that Rory Hoy has made.

Hey G's mummy - I think you will find that the last post on this topic was 7 1/2 years ago...interesting that you would join the forum just to post on a long-dormant topic, but just to let you know, I'm pretty sure that the individual who started this topic back then knows everything that you posted - she's actually instructed me about a lot of things about autism, Aspergers, in particular, and she's quite knowledgeable on the subject. Some of the other comments on the thread just show how much more information is out there regarding autism than there was 8 years ago.

From all the posts I have read by beatlebangs1964, I think she is very well-informed about Autism and I appreciate that she brings that out in her posts. Nice to meet you Gabriel's mummy and no doubt your son is very fortunate to have a mother who cares so deeply about her son's condition and wants others to understand. As a mother, I've got nothing but respect for this.
