Default Re: On Tour

I remember as if it were yesterday. The night was Aug. 29, 1965. I was living in San Diego, California and talked my mother into taking me to the Hollywood Bowl. I had gotten my ticket as soon as they were available. You couldn't hear much; not that the crowd was screaming and cheering so loud; but there was a technical problem. Paul's microphone wasn't working too well and so no one heard anything from his mike; singing or speaking. It was still a magical moment in my life.
Years later, living in Louisiana, I got to see Paul in Ft. Worth, Texas when he kicked off his "Wings Over America" tour in May 1976. It was great to actually hear him this time. I was really surprised when he started doing Beatle songs. I thought I had gone back in time to the Hollywood Bowl for a second.
Some more time elapsed and I was married with two kids when I heard Paul was going to be in Houston in April 1993. I made it a point to be there one way or another. We loaded up and headed to Houston. My daughters stayed with my sister while my wife and I went to the concert. It was her first ever time to see any Beatle in concert; so I know she was awestruck. A woman seated on the other side of me remarked how well I knew every song Paul sang. (If she only knew. )
My only regret came in the summer of 1978 while I was in upstate New York. On my trip back home, I went through New York City and passed by the Dakota. I wish I had stopped to see if I would have been lucky enough to catch sight of John that day. Because two and a half years later he was gone.

Default On Tour

Anybody have any personal Beatle memories as far as meeting or seeing them? Here's mine:

I saw Paul's first show back (since Wings Over America) in L.A. about 10 years ago. That is still the single greatest concert moment I've ever experienced. I don't know which was better - Yesterday, Hey Jude, or the whole Abbey Road thing at the end. It was all pretty damn good. Then I saw him a few months later in Berkeley. And then I saw him a few years later in Anaheim on the next tour.

I've never seen George, but if he were touring Japan with Clapton today, there's no doubt I would fly off and see him. I doubt that will ever happen again.

I saw Ringo in Los Angeles on his first All Starr tour about 10 years ago. But I've got a better story about him. I used to play in a band, and one night we were playing at The Roxy in Los Angeles. So who walks in while we're setting up? Ringo and the wife! He was apparently there to see his daughter's friend, who was in the next band. So we basically played a show for Ringo. Afterwards, I went up to him and shook his hand. He said our show was good, and that was the best stamp of approval we could ever get!

I'm completely impressed here.
Jerry, you've shook Ringo's hand? And spoke to him?
That's quite fantastic, you're really lucky, and I'm dead jealous.
I've never met, seen, heard, or smelt any beatle in my life.
And to have seen them, or any of them in concert, would have been just great.
Dead, dead jealous.

The idea behind this inquiry was not to make anybody jealous lennon-mccartney; but I do see your point of view.
It was very amazing to have seen them in concert and I wish more people could have done so as well. People say that history repeats itself; but Beatlemania, unfortunately, will not.
I do cherish the memories, as a true Beatles fan would. But the greatest thing they ever did was to have their music recorded so others, who became known of them in the last couple of decades, can share in the experience of what Beatlemania was all about.

I think the Concert for Bangla Desh movie has been shelved for the time being. If they ever do release a video of it, I'll be sure to pick it up.

I bought the official video of the concert about 10 years ago. It came in this kind of ugly brown-orange box, the same color as the LP. I have it stashed away somewhere.

I've already mentioned to lennon-mccartney that I saw the Beatles in concert on August 29, 1964 at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, N.Y. The tix were hard to come by, but my Godfather had connections. The anticipation ran from May to the concert night, & that's all I could think of. The concert was barely audible with all the screaming. Jackie DeShannon was the opening act & nobody paid any attention to the poor woman. The Beatles performed 15 songs in some 35 minutes & then they split. We had great difficulty trying to recognize each tune, but I have a list somewhere. The whole evening flew by and the letdown was severe. I cried myself to sleep that night, thinking there was nothing more to look forward to in life. I'll say this for Paul, he was quite the showman, trying to talk to the crowd and calm us down. Nothing worked. We were in such a frenzy, they could've sung hymns & it wouldn't have made any difference. I knew for the first time what true hysteria was! Very few events in my life have caused me the emotional turmoil I suffered when that concert was over.

I just read that in those days, the Beatles couldn't hear themselves (as we all know by now) over the screaming because of the small amps and poor monitors they had in those days. they would often just mouth the lyrics without singing and speed the songs up so they could get off the stage asap. One time, Ringo, after having been up for 2 days, was exhausted and couldn't move his foot for the bass drum and nobody noticed. The only way these shows were really heard was if they were recorded or similcast on the radio.

I saw Beatles live at Suffolk Downs in Boston in 1966. My brother ran out from the audience to get a closer look. A cop on horseback held him back, but Ringo did stare at Dennis as he ran closer. Since then Dennis has had photos of himself taken with John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Bearkat's right...'93 was very special for me. I fell in love to the tune "Woman" (Lennon), and over the years have learned quite a lot about the abiding love in the hubster's life - The BEATLES!

'93... I was 15 years old and Jerry was still really old.

Col, it's no crime to like G 'n' R, I'm still a fan of theirs.

I don't like them now though, or maybe a song. . . NO. . . if my friends knew I'd said that, they'd kill me on the spot.
Awww poor Jerry, he's not old at all!

And how do you two know each other, did you used to be an item?

It's a sensitive subject... I rejected him because of his age! God I love it.

No, Col, we were never an item, and never will be as long as he keeps insulting me like that! (So that basically means, NEVER!)

Gee, I leave you 2 alone for a few hours and look what happens! No, Marz & I aren't an item. Maybe in her dreams, but you'll have to check with her on that one. And many thanks go out to both of you for turning this topic into yet another discussion about my age.
