Beatles vs. Stones: US & UK
The Beatles vs. the Rolling Stones 1960s chart comparison, Part One
Remark:
I took the date of the Beatles` first year & month of chart action in a certain country, then looked when the Beatles charted last in that country (during their active recording career). After that, I looked when the Stones first charted in that country, and added the Beatles` span of chart years to the Stones` debut year. With this method it is assured that both groups are treated fairly.
Example:
Beatles January 64 (debut) to May 70 (last hit) = 6 years, 4 months
Stones August 64 (debut) + 6 years, 4 months = December 1970 ("last" hit)

Re: Beatles vs. Stones: US & UK
Wolf,
very impressive.
When you look at the UK positions, which in fact is their both home-country and (still) one of the leading chart-countries for pop-music, the differences are amazing.
But, to ley you know that I did read it, explain please again how you came to these conclusions.
Example;
UK
Beatles
- 28 singles mentioned
- 25 hitsingles
Stones
- 15 singles mentioned
- 15 hitsingles
and I'm sure the Stones had more releases than mentioned
I also look forward to the other European comparisons, like the Dutch.
Did Australia also have charts in the 60's?

Re: Beatles vs. Stones: US & UK
I guess Nowhere Man, that you know this Australian Website. It is pretty good and shows that She Loves You was the single that was in the charts the longest, 42 weeks.
It shows all the albums/singles/EP's, who-played-what, storytellers, and more.

Re: Beatles vs. Stones: US & UK
FPSHOT,
to answer your question: I didn`t count the re-entries of "She Loves You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "Can`t Buy Me Love" as "new" hits.
The Stones had no re-entries.

Re: Beatles vs. Stones: US & UK
FPSHOT,
The Stones singles that I listed are the ones that charted between 1963 and December 1970. I don`t know if they released more than those singles between 63 and 70, if yes, then they didn`t chart.
You can find the Dutch comparison in the "Some other countries" thread.

All I'd have to say is what my dad has been saying for it seems like years, "Whoever came out 1st would have been the best band ever....If The Stones came out before the Beatles, we would be talking about their influence rather than the Beatles" Thats how I see it also!

The Stones are original and unique in their own special way & I love the Stones as much as the Beatles, so don't get me wrong but I think anything after the Beatles is an imitation.

Of course. The Beatles were the first British pop band to make it big in America.
