Finally bought it today. You might think this is un-Beatlelike,but this is the first "solo" work of Paul's that I have bought since "Off the ground". Some of the new stuff reminds me a little of that CD.
I am a true "BEATLES" Fan mostly staying true to their work from 1960-1970,before the famous "BREAK-UP".
Over the years I have enjoyed listening to their solo efforts on the radio, but to this day have not purchased any solo work from John,George,or Ringo. There solo efforts are great, but I must be stuck in a Time-warp or something because that's what I still enjoy the most.
I'm so impressed that these guys still love to write music and even tour!!!I give Pauls work here a big "THUMBS-UP" as it sounds very cool.

PAUL IS LIVE!!!

Well, after my fist week listening to driving rain, here are my impressions:
-Lonely Road: as a kind of signpost, the song starts off with the predominant instrument on the whole album: the bass (what a lovely bass-album Driving Rain is!!!). It's surely one of the strongest songs on it, and the best rocker (reminded me of World Tonight). And boy, he still can sing!
-From a lover to a friend: one of the two classic piano ballads of the album he wonderfully and usually writes. Again, superb bass, and surprising vocals. Top song.
-She's given up talking: good instrumentation (great 'nasty' drums) but for me it's a filler.
-Driving Rain: pathetic lyrics on the chorus (12345...All together now, anyone?) but nevertheless a joyous, up-lifting song. Great driving song!
-I do: beuatiful song, nice melody and top instrumentation (as always).
-Tiny Bubble: reminded me of the 80's. Uncomplete. Another filler.
-Magic: I really like this one, and once again that BASS...
-Your Way: a kind of Mother Natures Son-Rocky Racoon-Another Day type of song, you can't stop loving it.
-Spining On An Axis: stupid rap-verses, it also sounds incomplete. A pitty, because the chorus could've been something...
-About You:second rocker on the album, it lives up to the 'back to the basis' concept. Good song.
-Heather: for me, the best song on the album. That piano line is simply great and it will stand up there with his best solo songs.
-Back In The Sunshine: could've been better, because the guitars are great. Not a bad song (maybe incomplete).
-Loving Flame: the second classic 'paul' piano ballad (he's been doing them great from Hey Jude to Beatiful Night). Ace song.
-Riding To Jaipur: a homage to George? It's alright, but for me it's also a filler.
-Rinse The Raindrops: ten minutes of superb rock-funk playing. Terrific ending.
-Freedom: weak lyrics for me, but it's a beautiful emotive song. Great end.

Conclusions? 7 or 8 Paul classics, 3-4 fine songs and 3-4 fillers. Well, for me it's a very good album. And one thing is sure: PAUL IS LIVE!!!

Heather has got to be one of my hands down faves, mmm love it, and a runcible spoon (The context in which it's used in The Owl and the PussyCat) is the equivelent of a Spork, a rounded spoon, with twines on the end of it. Or so says my English teacher. I don't know how you can get a runcible tune. Maybe a "rounded but still catchy tune"?

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat
Edward Lear
The Owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat:
They took some honey, and plenty of money
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy, O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"

Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl,
How charmingly sweet you sing!
Oh! let us be married; too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the bong-tree grows;
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood,
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will."
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand on the edge of the sand
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

Any one else catch another McCartney song lyric? "Ring at the end of his nose" from Rockshow

Finally had my first listen today to the new album. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed. At this point in Paul's career, I definitely think he should stick to the ballads. He's the best around when he does it, and I just don't think he should be belting out so many rockers anymore. He also seems to write waaaay better lyrics when the song is softer. When he gets around to touring, I really hope he does only a few from this album, because they just don't even come close to standing up to his other work.

I don't have the CD with me right now, but on track 7, about 3 minutes into it, does anybody else hear a kind of mistake/missed beat? I played it a few times, and the rhythm of the song got all screwed up right around there.

As for Freedom, I'm pretty sure this is the live recording with a few things added here or there to polish it up. I remember hearing about a real studio version of the song, but maybe it's on the single.

A wonderful album. It is just good music. And that's enough. From A Lover To A Friend seemed to be an old single. Maybe I haven't heard it before. But I liked it. And it is new and this fact tells me that Paul is live! Paul is young! Paul is in love! I know that inspiration comes only when you feel love. Thank you Paul!

Hello, Rellevart!

Yes, I am among the legion of listeners who've made it their quest to discover the meaning of "Runcible Tune." Although I am about to conclude Paul may simply be having a laugh at our expense! ("Runcible Tune" does, after all, rhyme with "Runcible Spoon.")

Cheers!

I agree. I think I have a pretty good ear, and I don't hear it.

I do hear it...."all the world's a tiny bubble" is the same as "have you seen the little piggies"....but that's hardly enough to my mind to say it's been lifted. After all, there are a finite number of notes out there and a finite number of ways they can be put together. Every tune probably has a note sequence of some length that you can find in some other tune.

I was flipping thru radio stations this morning and one of them was playing a short taped piece from one of their morning shows, didn't catch which one, and the two announcers were joking around.

The part I heard was "...and McCartney, now that would be something" [sarcastic]
"yeah, Elton & Billy Joel. Paul McCartney and Cher. Now that(!) would end his career"
"Hey, have you heard his new album? I'd say his career was already ended."

If I could have reached thru the radio I would have smacked him! Like, hello, you're the one doing commercial announcements on the radio. Ugh! Wish I had noticed which station it was before I changed channels.
