at some point I remember finding out and was sort of jealous and pissed but mostly envious of british releases

(british imports also had the coolest album covers! Jimi Hendrix with bare ladies, blindfaith's cover, stuff they were too uptight to put on american lp covers)

Also the Beatles develped fast, the sound of an album they released a year previously already sounded different to the songs the Beatles were then working on. So in my mind it's kind of strange listening to albums that has songs on it which were recorded years apart.
We had the same US editions up here as well (Québec)... like you said, for most of the LP's, it didn't make that big of a difference (only that we would wind having to buy one or two extra LP's !).

But yes, those two great movie scores by George Martin... I was glad to have those and thought it was a shame that the CD versions didn't include his music (until that Capitol box-set came out recently). *

* That reminds me, is the "old" edition of "Yellow Submarine" (with Martin's score on side B) still being made available ?

The only other US vs. UK album release that made any differenece, and I've always thought that this was pretty clever thinking (for once !) by Capitol was "Rubber Soul"... they took off some of the more "electric" songs and added some accoustic-guitar-driven from "Help !" ect, and billed it (semi officially) as being "The Beatles Folk album" !

Ouch... that hurts... Bad idea, if you ask me. The strong point of The Beatles is the diversity. Putting similar songs on an album and stuffing it in a specific genre hurts my Beatles-feelings... ;) Maybe it was indeed clever, but to me that's still a bad idea. ;)

I asume you're talking about Help!. The movie score wasn't by Martin but by Ken Thorn. To me the choise is simple. Original Beatle songs or some music score, I go with original Beatle songs.

The U.S. Rubber Soul is a fine album.... and, there was never any problem with "diversity" in any Beatles LP - regardless of the country it was released in. It was always there.

I rather liked the "soundtrack" approach to the U.S. "HELP!". I found that the instrumentals worked very well intertwined with the Beatles' own music. It made fo a more true "HELP!" experience...

... and nowhere else but on the Capitol "HELP!" do you get to hear the first signs of what was to come on "Rubber Soul" - George's Indian influence!
