Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
Many people say that the former is, quite possible and arguably, the best single ever released, at the very least by the Beatles.
And while the earlier single does rule, I seem to prefer the hard-rocking war protest of Lennon and the anthemic sounds of Hey Jude (the coda on Hey Jude can unite people like no other song could).
Opinions? Comments?

I have to agree with you. I like Hey Jude/Revolution slightly better than Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane. To be quite honest, I've never really been a big fan of Penny Lane.

Not even a close contest. SFF/Penny Lane wins.
Hey Jude and Penny Lane cancel each other out: two wonderful Paul classics, though Jude is perhaps a little overdone.
HOWEVER, great though Revolution is, Strawberry Fields Forever is a masterpiece. That tips the scale to the earlier single.
And remember, when the history books discuss the Beatles in a century's time, I'll wager that SFF gets more ink than Revolution!

Possibly true (I might even wager on it). But Hey Jude probably will get more ink than Penny Lane as well.

I can't say which one is better, because both selections are great. They're diffrent, but still great. I can say what I prefer: SFF/PL.

It's hard to compare the two. Both are fantastic, though very different singles. Penny Lane and Hey Jude I've never cared as much for, but Strawberry Fields Forever and Revolution... wow. Both are so powerful, I don't think I can really put one above the other.

I would say that Come Together/Something ranks as good or even better.

Re: Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
I think both singles are different in its own style. Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane are more on the psychedelic line, and Hey Jude/Revolution on the ballad and rocker style. Personally, I choose Hey Jude&Revolution.

Re: Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
I notice this Beatle board isn't as BIG of a fan of Hey Jude (although they're far from Hey Jude haters). Now I don't mean it's unpopular here (it does VERY well on polls here and such), but I see a high number of people here that don't care much for it.
Why is it? I know it's been played plenty on the radio, but that shouldn't detract one from liking it. The anthem of that song... I wish it would go on for 5 more minutes, it's so incredible.
Now, I don't think everyone should rank it as high as I do (It's my favorite Beatle song next to Let It Be), but it is so bloody fantastic! Definitely ranks high with classics like Strawberry Fields Forever, Yesterday, Help!, and Here Comes The Sun.

Re: Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
I don't know about anyone else, but I like their lesser known hits more than the freakishly overplayed hits they play on the radio. In fact, I almost never listen to anything that came close to #1. One of my favorite songs in the world is I've Just Seen A Face.

Re: Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
I'd take "Hey Jude/Revolution" over "PL/SFF" without too much discomfort. Paul's half of the pairings clearly goes to "Hey Jude" and John's part is a toss-up for me.

Yup, I´ve noticed the same thing, much to my amazement. Personally I think Hey Jude is one of the best, if not THE best song they ever made. I´ve always said that I couldn´t pick just one favorite Beatles song, but if I had to, I´d probably pick Hey Jude. It´s such a totally fantastic song, I love it!
As for the subject Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane vs Hey Jude/Revolution, I can´t really say. Like I said, Hey Jude is definitely one of my favorites by the Beatles, but then again, so are SFF and Penny Lane. I really like Revolution as well, but I like the other three more. Based on that, I should probably vote for SFF/Penny Lane, but since I love Hey Jude sooo much, I have to call it a tie.

Re: Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
I'd pick "Hey Jude/Revolution" so far over "SFF/PL" that I don't even think you can measure it. Penny Lane is ok, but I stand by a statement I made in an earlier topic that TO ME (in other words, don't flame me), "SFF" is one of the most overrated songs ever. Just don't care for it at all.

And once again it's proved that the Beatles are so many things to so many people!
Although I don't agree with you, Rellevart, I feel that you are not alone in your view about SFF. I know several people that finally gave up on the Beatles when SFF/PL was released. It was the last straw for them - they openly admitted that they didn't understand the Beatles anymore. They didn't like their non-pop-star behavior, and certainly didn't appreciate the "weird" attitudes of John Lennon and George Harrison. I thought they were nuts - for me the Beatles were getting to be a very interesting band indeed!
Most young people today also do not like SFF, and the song does not grow on them! Interestingly, they don't like Penny Lane either - which seems to me a much more accessible song. Perhaps the two songs are so obviously personal, especially SFF, and that puts some folk off.
[I just reread this post, and want to emphasize that I'm not putting you into any category, Rellevart. I admire your stand on SFF.]

Re: Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
I'd say Hey Jude/Revolution, 'cause they're much easier to listen to the first time round, but SFF/PL are both amazing songs too
so I guess, yet again, that that's me undecided

Re: Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution?
"Hey Jude" was the song that turned me on to the Beatles and it remains near the top of my list. But I think together "Straweberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane" is a stronger combo that "Hey Jude"/"Revolution".
