Default If Sir Paul, Why Not, Sir Ringo?

He will always be Ringo Starr, drummer, to me. If one were to listen to a track like George’s “Don’t Bother Me” off “With the Beatles”, one can hear Ringo playing what sounds like bongos- but Eastern bongos. Yes, Ringo was World Music before “World Music.”

In fact, if you listen to many Beatles’ tracks, there are not so much as drums holding them together- but percussion- tambourines, cowbells, maracas…whatever could make a sound. I recently listed to “You Can’t Do That” and “I Call Your Name,” two very underrated Beatles tracks and, apart from John’s great vocals, my ears went to the percussion. Apart from his drum rolls on “A Day In The Life” and which I only thought Hal Blaine was capable of doing, Ringo’s work on these two tracks say much about his musical role with the Beatles.

Let’s also not forget that it was Ringo who came up with the terms “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Tomorrow Never Knows” and other “malapropisms” which also found their way into quite a few songs by Beatles. For instance, he came up with the line, “Darning his socks in the night when there’s nobody there” for “Eleanor Rigby”.

The last time there was a petition to have Ringo honoured with a knighthood was in 2006 when Time magazine’s David Finkelstein started up a petition and which attracted 1,887 signatures. Not good enough, boys and girls plus much has happened in four years and which is why I Am Not A Member.

Ringo also named the Harrison/Clapton song "Badge." Ringo saw the lyrics on a sheet of paper and where the word BRIDGE was written, Ringo asked why it said BADGE. The rest is history.

If Ringo has a star at the Walk of Fame, why not Paul?

Ringo came up with the line about swans in the park in "Badge."

I'm with Mari. Why in the blue hell doesn't Paul have a Star in the Walk of Fame? What, my favorite Beatle (along with George) does not have his Star yet? Whassup with that? It's long past time Paul got his Star and maybe we should get up a petition about it!

I read on a different forum that Paul's star has already been approved. He just has to choose a date. I think it will probably be sometime late in the year after his tour.

Going back to the question of "If Sir Paul, why not Sir Ringo?" It's because the British honours system has always been a bit of a joke and gets sillier every year.

Amen, Sister Valerie!

I am DELIGHTED that Paul will get his much deserved Star! The man has contributed to the world of art as well as music for over half a century. Paul McCartney and Tony Bennett are to music what Audrey Hepburn was to acting. Class, style, elan and charm!

i don't think ringo will ever get a knighthood.

over the yrs some people who i don't believe should've been knighted have.

the guy who kicked the goal that won england the rugby world cup became a sir! that is just crap!
geoff hurst, for scoring a hat-trick in the 1966 world cup final.
i don't know whether these two and others like them have done fantastic work for charity as well, but i don't believe a sportsman deserves a knighthood.

there are selfless, 'normal' people out there who are not famous, and do incredible work for the needy all of their lives, their lives are full of sacrifice, they are the ones who should get one.
heroes during war, they should get one.

somone who kicks a ball or plays a guitar does not deserve a knighthood.

knighthoods have become very cheap.

emmies, oscars, tonies, grammies, knighthoods, halls-of-fame, and on and on...
It's all a bit of a joke isn't it? It's the art that matters, lifting and inspiring people, making something beautiful or profound. Does not getting a star on a sidewalk make someone less of a worthy person ? Does being a sir make anyone better? Does not getting an oscar lessen the performance an actor turned in? What are all these awards for? Recognition? Fame? Money? Greatness should be acknowledged, sure, but exactly who is doing the acknowledging?
Pretty soon people will be 'honored' with an award for getting the most awards.

an mbe for a 'star' who has been around for a long time in the business. people who work in factories for 'a long time' should be the ones getting the awards, that IS very hard to do!

If Ringo gets a "sirhood" the John & George need one too. ESPECIALLY John, 1/2 of Lennon & McCartney although people seem to be forgetting that lately. John needs to honored w/ a Hollywood star & a Gershwin prize too. Paul & John were two parts of the same whole, and although I love Paul, it seems a little off-balance sometimes. John's sons should accept the awards for him, by the way. I don't care for Yoko although she was John's soulmate. Sorry :<

Again, what are the criteria for being knighted?

You have to PAY for you star in Hollywood :) If you don't believe me, look up the critieria.

It is really only for acts looking for a publicity opportunity or to massage an aging ego.

Regarding Knighthood (I am an American, so forgive me...) was there not a small scandal a few years ago that the government was in essence 'selling' knighthoods in exchange for political/charitable donations?

Ringo stated pretty clearly that he thought the "royal system should end with the present queen - there shouldn't be another" (I think I got that quote right). Whether you agree or not, that pretty much torpoedoes a knighthood anyway, doens't it?
