Why are you a fan of George mainly
What is the main thing that you like and why you are a fan. Let's try to be honest.
So this is about why you're a fan now, it can be that you fell for George's look, but then started to listen to his music and find that is why you're a fan nowadays, so that's the option you choose.Ofcourse it can be a combination of things, but what is the main thing for you.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
Your question relates to 'now' and being a 'fan'.
Then I have a combination of the first two.
For his music, his words and for the person he is/was.
"Now", so like 'these days' my love for George is for many things, which have grown on me over the years.
For his music - I think everyone has but one or a few artists/musicians, for whom you really have this automatic feeling of balance between taste and really loving it. I can say that I love George's music. In everything he has created I recognize that I fall for it. Maybe Electronic Sounds raises a question, but then, I can think of moments where that music is inspiring . Wonderwall took me some time to love, but I love it. Those two probably also are the first for others to wonder if you like it. Well I gave it some thoughts over the years.
For the rest, of course I have preferences and some which I can be critical about, but then, there's a saying which says that the best critic someone can have comes from the closest friend. Cryptical maybe, but that's how I see it.
His words - yes, not only the lyrics in his songs, but also what he spoke all those years. I admire this man for the beautiful way he writes lyrics. It's hard to do, try it, and when you want to write someone a love song, it's easy to start with the three famous words and go from there. Well I believe George had it in him to just because of that many songs go like that, he chose to think of other, more sensitive and romantic ways to say the same. But from his whole songbook, in fact most songs are about different things and also there he has the quality to be poetic and direct. That is what I love about it.
For who he is/was - that for me is the key thing. I am (more than) a fan of George, because it's George. Because I recognize things in him, which apply to me in many ways. And not because I am his fan. His view on life strikes me, attracks me and again, not because he makes music I love, but just because I agree and find myself in it.
The gardening, the seak for peace and quiet, the search for the spirituality which does make you a better person, the way of life.
I have got to know a lot more about the Eastern world via George and it's amazing and so interesting.
George said "I got to know a culture, which I did not even know the extistence of. At school you are taught world's history, but you don't hear about the great mystical life in the East. You know why people made such a big thing about us meeting the Maharishi? Because us Western people don't take the effort to find out what e.g. mediation is about."
Well I am getting to know the world of Yogananda and the Yogis of the Himalaya and I can tell you, it also opened my eyes and it has nothing to do with a choise for one particilar way of religion, because many think it's not related to e.g. the Bible, well that is far from reality, and besides, it is so much more, so much more.
So George got in to that and I am beginning to see why. And look what it did to George as a person. All the love and many others things he gave and shared and when you look back now on those four heroes of ours, and compare the personalities they became over the years.....
how do you see George, as a personality, for instance comparted to Paul and Ringo ?
That's why I am a fan of George 'now'. As I have been since the release of She Loves You (on single )

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Fair enough.
Beautifully spoken.
The main thing that started it is George's music and words, and that's the answer I will give for the other 3 to, (2 of the others anyway)
Ofcourse George started to spark interest in eastern philosophy, tho I am nowhere near to you FP and far removed from where HC is.
But the music is what started everything and is what I still love.
George's songs are not just songs to me, and it helps that they are written from the heart by a man like George.Had George choisen a different direction in life, we might not have the songs we have now, at least not the words, so yes a combination of both things but the music and his words is the main thing why I am a fan.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
Kinda a tough question don't ya think?
I couldn't say looks because some of the best music imo comes from ATMP and I am sorry but in my opinion that look was almost horrendous (sorry Hari).
His music and words? Well maybe, but there are also some that I don't like because of the words. Also if I look at his whole music career, so much of his stuff is too slow and insightful for me. I like harder rock, dancing stuff.
Then, the who he is wasn't going to fit me either. I really don't connect with the Indian aspect or the veggie aspect or his 'political' side. That is such a big aspect of who he is.
But I really truly am a big fan of his!!
I think if I had to say why I am a fan I would have to say his voice first and foremost. Then his music and words, and I will admit his looks usually get me, and if I could look at personality part of who he is, then definitely this as well. It is hard to explain chemical/spiritual magnetism.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Well it depends on who you ask, if you just like his music and don't care for the looks and who he is, the answer is easy. But with George, I admit that there somewhow is a combination of why you are a fan, cause like with John his personal life, his believes and who he is finds a way into his music and words.
Also before "Brainwashed" was released, and we were all waiting for a follow up to "Cloud Nine", I just thought about George taking care of his garden, being happy doing what he does, and it was alright. If he was going to make another album I would be happy ofcourse, but it was somehow alright if he choise to never record again.
So it might be a dificult question to some, yes.
With Paul it is easy for me, with Ringo again it would be very dificult, cause I am not sure wheter I am a fan of Ringo, I bought his albums to have a complete Beatles solo colection.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
FPSHOT,
That was so beautifully said. I have to agree with you 100% on this one. For me, the music and the person he was. I liked his looks too and in all honesty we all know I love his hair. Seriously, it was the music that drew me in. From there, an interest in the man who created this music was piqued so really, each one of these questions is a segue into the next.
Adding to what you have said, I love George for his humility; for his sharing his beliefs; for the way he used his talents as a vehicle to express those beliefs and, now, most recently, how his influence has become so much a part of my church.
Every Monday at my church, the CHRP (Christ Renews His Parish) group meets and plans for the Spring Retreat. As of December, "Here Comes The Sun" has become the group's song. "Sun" has been replaced with "Son" and the concepts apply so readily. George has made me appreciate and recognize my own spirituality all the more and for that I will always love him.
Imagine all the smiles that lighted up people's faces in that Monday night group when, in response to a question that George was baptized Catholic. Each person had to tell their faith story and I set mine to music - I played "Dear One" and "Any Road" because if you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there.
Whenever I read Beatle biographies or even Beatle fan fic, I am always drawn to the George stories. I absolutely LOVE George biographies; the youngest Beatle was so well loved from the outset and I really think it was those early experiences and values that came out so plainly in his music. I love listening to him speak; I think he was a very intense person to a certain degree and I found his insights inspirational and very interesting.
George's music reached me from a very early age; "I Want to Tell You" has got to be one of my all time favorite songs. Seriously, the lyrics are really in effect the story of my life. I think George had a real gift for expressing himself and I think that when you listen to him, you are listening to musical purity. George held no pretenses, no illusions; I believe he was an honest man and that his talent was his way of reaching others.
It certainly worked for me and countless many others. I will always love George.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
I voted "because of his music", which I didn't know very well until two years ago (more or less), thanks to darkhorse, whom introduced me to almost all of his songs. Before that, I admit that I wasn't really interested in his solo work. Now I admire it very much, and listen to his songs really often.
Later on, I began to know more of his personality and to realize that he was like me in many aspects (I'm a Pisces Fish too ) and admire him for that too.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
Music and words, for me.. I have to admit when I saw the Beatles the first time I was a Paul & John person, but over the years, George's great sense of humor and wonderful kind spirit turned me wayyyyy around, I am a gardener, so I know that calming spiritual thing you get from that, his songs are soulful, his voice was that extra magic that the Beatles needed, George's faith to this day makes me awe struck, it was unshakeable, as for his solo works, I have some favorites and some that I just can't bring myself to love(but I like it), but that would be the same with all of the Beatles solo career music. George you were so dear. I would agree with FP, many things about George have grown on me over time.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
Music and lyrics, most definitely. I love and respect George tremendously, but as far as "who he is", he and I are MILES apart, so it's not that. And although he's nice looking, he's never been my type, so it's not that. I think the thing I like best about his music/lyrics is that you're never quite sure when he's going to be utterly sincere and when he's going to be completely goofy. Sincere and goofy is a totally winning combination for me.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">This is very interesting! That is amazingly cool to be divergent on those topics, yet still have this connection you have with George. It is like...the universal love between you both. Very cool.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
I voted 'for his looks' because they outshine all that inner beauty he has....those cheekbones, his beautiful hair, gorgeous smile.
Kidding! I vote 'who he is'. Of course I love the whole package, but even if he was a non-musical neighbor I would find him absolutely captivating. He's just the most beautiful person, inside and out...but the inside is the lasting part.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
I voted for who he is. Because really, his music is who he is. He wrote from his heart and was honest about things that he observed. The world according to George.. But, that's what I adore about George. His practices didn't match my own, not in the least. I'm not vegie or am a Buddhist. But I *do* love beauty. And that's what George is to me. As HC said, his beauty.. inside and out.

Re: Why are you a fan of George mainly
I chose because of who he is, but I was really torn between that and his music/words. I will admit that when I first became really interested in the Beatles, it was George's looks that attracted me to him. But at that time I was just 12 years old and (apart from Got My Mind Set on You) I was pretty ignorant of his solo work. But over time as I got to know his music better and learnt more about him, it wasn't about his looks anymore. I just thought (and still think) that he was an incredible person, and a wonderful musician.
The reason I was torn between the other two choices is because there is so much of George in his music that it is difficult to differentiate. I know there is much more to George than being a musician however, and it was this that made me say because of who he is. That incorporates his music, his generosity, his outlook on life, his forthrightness, his beliefs, his humour, and just everything else that I love about him.

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Sure that's why it is dificult to answer. Now I am thinking of saying "who he is" as reason why I am a fan, see the example I gave earlier, but hadn't he been a muscian and wouldn't have these wonderfull music. I probably wouldn't have known who George Harrison was and I wouldn't be a fan at all, unless he was HC's neighbour and he was postin on links together with HC, and I would say, "You've got a great neighbour, I am a fan of him".

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Yeah, he did have beautiful wavy hair, those intense eyes, that beautiful wavy hair, those chiseled features, that beautiful wavy hair, those incredibly beautiful cheek bones and that beautiful wavy hair. Oh yeah, his beautiful wavy hair.
I agree, HC that George had an inner beauty (Inner Light, perhaps) as well as being aesthetically pleasuing to the eyes. I admit that if we were neighbors and George was nonmusical as you said, I would certainly notice him. I think his inner beauty is really what grabbed our collective attention. It makes me think of George's own words in what you value. George was a man of deep, lasting values and that only added to his many positive attributes.

I originally fell for George because he was so sexy! Later on as I got to know him better and got interested in his music I realized wasn't just another pretty face, he was a real genius, and a wonderful man inside.
