Default Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Ok, so I've heard this song a few times in the last few days. Is this just one of the greatest songs ever or what? Each part of the song is so sweet, and they all come together so perfectly. The first section has some of John's best random lyrics, with a great harmony on there. The next section has a really nice fuzzy-sounding lead guitar, with John singing as low as he can go. The next part has one of Paul's trademark running basss lines. And then comes that amazing final section...man, those harmonies near the end are just so completely perfect. And the way John is ripping his voice apart at the same time is such a sweet contrast. On top of all that, there's like a 20 second part in there where the drums are in 4-4 time and the instruments are in 3-4 time. Genius I tell you...genius!

I agree... I think you have to listen to it carefully to complete appreciate it, and after that, no one can disagree with you... I love the way the three parts get together, I love the way the instruments change thier 'priority'... I love the way John voices change the tone depending on what he's saying... I real love this song!

I agree. It's like a mini medley in one song. I love the beginning bit with the random lyrics. Best part of the song I reckon.

I recognize five parts in the song:

She's Not A Girl
Random Lyrics (she's well acquainted...)
This ends with a sparkling three-part vocal harmony. Is that John, John and Paul or is George actually there? After that comes a trademark Lennon guitar bridge
I Need A Fix
Mother Superior
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Bang, bang, shoot, shoot

One of my faves from the White Album.

Than trying to say what's been said before"

I think John used one of his old tricks of putting two bits of songs together to create this masterpiece.

i think that John was slamming American Pop culture, or maybe not who can really tell?
i like the lyrics. Not sure how random they really are though. That song definitely hits the mark. i like the "lecturey" tone of his masterpiece.

Love that song but not crazy about singing, " I need a fix..."
I'd love to play this song with the band but that stops us, not that we're such angels but that's a bit much.

The brilliance of this song lies in its metephors, "the man in the crowd with the multi-coloured mirrors on his hobnail boots"...is this a peeping tom? "Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy working over time"...a con artist? You can take the metephors so many ways. A band called "the Breaders" does a pretty good cover of this song.

"Happiness is a Warm Gun" is, by far, the best Beatles song. It will always be my favorite.

I'm not sure about the meaning of all of the lyrics but I DO know that the part that says...

A soap impression of his wife, which he ate and donated to the National trust...

Has something to do with a man having a dirty mouth and his wife "washing his mouth out with soap". I knew what the next line had to do with too at one point but now I can't remember. HIAWG is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Beautiful can't even describe what this song is. It has long been a favorite of mine.

------------------
Why shouldn't we cry? They tell us to stop crying at about twelve. Be a man. What the hell is that? Men Hurt.
-John Lennon
