Default Beatles No.1 Again in R.S.

I turned on my television this morning to the Today show and was greeted by a guy talking about the Fabs. He was from Rolling Stone talking about the April 15 issue (No. 946). This is a special 'Rock & Roll Immortals' issue. It is the first of three celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rock and Roll. The top 50 are listed with our boys number one. Elvis Costello wrote the tribute to the Beatles and needless to say he is a fan. He said his two favorite Beatles albums are 'Rubber Soul' and 'Revolver'.The guy from R.S. said Sgt. Peppers is the all time best album.
There is an article on this subject in todays (Mar.25) USA Today. It is online at usatoday.com and click on the life section.
Much of the R.S. article is online at rollingstone.com
When I bought my cell phone 'Circuit City' was giving away free 1 year subscriptions to R.S. and mine started a few weeks ago. I cannot wait to receive this issue.

Thanks for the information. I'll have to be on the lookout for that issue.

Also, I looked at the list and John is #38.

I'm so glad the Beatles are on the list, and not only that, but at number one! It's a familiar position for them I suppose. hooray!

qoute&gt;It was the first time anything like this had happened on this scale. But it wasn't just about the numbers; Michael Jackson can sell records until the end of time, but he'll never matter to people as much as the Beatles did.

You said it all there MR.C !
p.s........Perhaps that last word should read "DO " ! As The Beatles STILL DO matter ,to millions of music lovers the world over !

I do realize that these lists they put in magazines are really sort of harmless fun. But I never care for them much. I'm of the belief that you can never truly summarize or list the value of a great artist. I think art is subjective. There can not be a concrete list that says, "well this person is number 1 and so on." I agree that the Beatles were the greatest band that ever existed (in the 20th Century and before it), for a number of reasons, and because their music has, and will, live on.

But I don't know..."Rock Immortals" seems more like another marketing ploy to sell a bunch of magazines. It wouldn't bother me, but it does when people use these kinds of lists as a basis for arguments. Like, "Oh the Beatles are the best ever because they were number 1 so many times in Rolling Stone and Mojo and Uncut and Blender and etc. lists."

No. They are the best ever for far more important reasons than that.

Just my opinion. Why do I feel it's necessary to bitch about it? Ask me when I find out myself...

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Totally 100% agree with you here. The lists are subjective and just somebody's (or lots of people's) opinions, so citing them as proof of your favorite band's greatness is ludicrous.

However, this article (you can read it on line so you don't have to buy the mag if you don't want to!) by Elvis Costello is a really good one and I encourage everybody to read it. It's cool when another musician who's been very influential in his own way, like EC, still is a huge fan of OUR favorite band too.
