It's hard for me to separate, in my mind, the questions of which track I like the most and which track I feel functions best as an opener.

Either way, I just can't do it!

those are in order of which I like the most, but if I had to choose which I thought did the best at starting off the album, then Taxman, A Hard Day's Night, and Sgt. Pepper would be at the top.

Totally... on all counts.

I simply couldn't not respond using the U.S. albums. There's no way "I Want To Hold Your Hand" can be passed-over as the premiere Beatles album opener. That instance of an opener, alone, is argument enough.
