^ Nice thought... but, sorry, the day Whitney died will not stand out in my memory, except for the fact that I heard the news about an hour after Angelyne drove up next to me in her pink Corvette and asked me for my parking spot.

So that's what it's like to live in LA, eh?
I'm kind of over these people who attribute this or that celebrity death to something as monumental as when John died.
I have so much to say about it, but I'll probably offend someone so I'm keeping my mouth shut.

I'm sorry, you Whitney fans out there, and I'm sorry the woman is dead--I'm sorry for her family--but it's not even close to when John Lennon died. The woman could sing better than just about everybody, but she was shoehorned into recording schlock, which probably made a lot of people very rich...cough...clive davis...cough...
Nice to see Bruce take the Lennon guitar solos on "The End" on the Grammys the other night. If anyone but John had to do it, it might as well have been the Boss.

I love Bruce. He also looks incredible for his age, but I digress...

Oh, girl, don't get me started on Whitney Houston. There's a line out of Amadeus that, even when I watched it for the first time at the movie theater, brought Whitney to mind immediately: Salieri's reminiscing about a lovely, buxom opera diva performing in one of Mozart's operas, "like the showy, greedy little songbird she was." That was the dear girl in a nutshell.
There's a lot to be said for vocal control and interpretation, but Whitney's 4-octave voice was not controlled and ranged from forte to fortissimo. Her one musical expression can be explained thus: Notice me! I am the best singer ever! Poor thing, she had no control on how the media (over) reacted, but was it really necessary to break into SNL with an NBC Special Report to tell us what we'd already known for hours?
And Simon Cowell, well, pffft. What the hell does he know.
Oh well, I hope her soul finds rest.
But I digress.
One of my co-workers wandered down the hall whistling "All You Need is Love," yesterday. Maybe because it was Valentine's Day? It was weird hearing this person whistling it though. He never struck me as--well, as someone who would listen to John's music, I guess.

The Lennon Spirit is Alive and Well in The Magic Kingdom
I went to Disneyland yesterday and poked my head in the Golden Horseshoe, a "saloon"-style ice cream restaurant where I remember corny western-style hoe-downs and such from when I was a kid. Well, tickle me pink when I walked in and heard Billy Hill and the Hillbillies performing Ticket to Ride... I tried to capture how the guy on the right was imitating John's "splayed legs" stance... he closed up a little by the time I snapped this shot, but he was rockin' it Lennon-style for a bit:

38. I was surfing around and came upon this poem from a fan:
1980, 12 and 8
if you can imagine
blood like paint.
a lonely would-be saint,
brilliant light wasted in
a dark night.
he is us. he is I, me and mine.
oh, a nowhere man with no more time.
if you can imagine
Dakota.
her sighs.
dark hair in her face
damp as she cries,
“don’t come home tonight.
don’t come home.”
if you can imagine
terror
heat
gun hitting concrete.
a sore heart
blown apart.
wits end
bodies bend.
the blood pools.
bloody, bloody fools.
a man waits with a gun tonight.
his feet weigh a ton tonight.
hearts aglow tonight.
they will know tonight.
a bullet thrown tonight.
and tomorrow.
and tomorrow.
if you can imagine
all the people
candles in hand on the streets
with their tears staining brightly
their sheets
singing love in a heart that no longer beats.
----------
Sad, obviously, but very beautifully written.

Honestly, I could see someone like PJ Harvey or Patti Smith turning those lyrics into something amazing as a song.

4iiiis! Don't ever share something like that without good warning. I will never be able to un-see that picture of Phil Spector without one of his various wigs and makeup again.

Okay, so this isn't just John, it's The Beatles but I can't find that thread in the Abbey Road forum that's similar to this one, so what the hey...
With all the post-Oscars interviews I watched this past week, I learned that Argentine-French actress and Academy Award nominee Berenice Bejo learned English by listening to Beatles songs with her parents.

...back to John. I went shopping for a baby shower gift today, and since the dad has some solid Beatles creds, I figured I'd get a cute Fab tee or onesie or something. There are a zillion trendy baby boutiques close to me, and I went into a few of them before deciding on an All You Need is Love tee... and at that same store, they had the coolest green long-sleeve thermal with a picture of John, but the mean lady wouldn't let me snap a photo. wtf?

^They're like that in boutiques now. No cameras! Like I'm going to take the picture and replicate a model and sell it.
Oh snap. I guess people do that then.

I'm sorry Apple! Maybe you prefer the dashing looks of "Gollum" from "The Lord Of The Rings", Phil's long-lost brother. He at least has nicer hair than Phil ;-)
