was paul left handed.
i know it is always stated that paul is left handed but how true is this?
we know paul could not play his first guitar right handed and had the strings turned around. but is paul left handed for anything else? why would he try playing guitar right handed in the first place? can anybody shed any light on this please?

Re: was paul left handed.
yes. it is very true. He tried playing guitar because he didn't have any left handed guitars at the time and they weren't as easy to find. But he is a natural left handed.

Re: was paul left handed.
Well...the fact that Paul writes with his left hand (and was not forced to change in school, like many children of his generation, including Ringo) says to me that he is truly left-handed. He does other things left-handed too -- I dunno, whatever kinds of ordinary things one usually does with one's dominant hand, I think Paul does with his left.
I think the reason he didn't start off by trying to play left-handed is because it just never occurred to him that there was any other way at the time he first learned. He learned differently pretty quickly, anyway! Perhaps at first, when he was a kid and didn't know there was a difference, he didn't realize there WAS another way to play.
It was also (and sometimes still is) difficult to get "left-handed" guitars -- and on some guitars it can make a difference because of the width of the "channels" for the strings on the neck of the guitar, and until he found the Hofner violin-shaped bass, he had to play upside-down, which doesn't make for very comfortable playing, depending on the shape of the guitar.

Re: was paul left handed.
I'm a leftie, and as HMV said it is *extremely* difficult to get left handed guitars in shops. Every time I go in one there are rows upon rows of right handed guitars and maybe one left handed guitar tucked away in the corner.

Re: was paul left handed.
My brother was left handed, but he played the guitar right handed. He tried to play guitar left handed, but it just didn't feel right for him. Our father is the same way. He's left handed but he can only play the guitar right handed. As a matter of fact, he use to play the banjo right handed while he still writes with his left.

I am right handed, though I'm trying to pratice different things with my left. I watch Paul autograph with his left hand, and I just can't imagine writing with my left hand, it's wierd.

Yep. Paul was a lefty. I always laugh at his upside down guitars. Funny.

Re: was paul left handed.
When I started playing cello in 5th grade I played lefty until my teacher made me switch (she didn't think it was "proper" ). Having played cello right-handed for so many years, it felt completely natural to play guitar that way, too.
Honestly, I don't know how Paul stood it all those years before playing proper lefty instruments! I've tried playing my guitar left-handed a couple of times and it is just the most awkward unnatural thing in the world

No, what I meant was that it's unnatural and awkward to play a RIGHT-HANDED instrument left-handed; unless you restring the instrument, you have to put your fingers in difficult positions to produce the same sounds. Even when you do restring the instrument, it is still more often than not uncomfortable because of the asymmetrical shape of most instruments. I was just pointing out how hard it must have been for Paul to play upside-down and backwards for all those years before getting an instrument that was meant to be played lefty.

I've read somewhere that Paul was right-handed, but he found more confortable to play with the left, is that true??

Nah, he's a lefty. He does almost every "major" action left handed: writing, playing, eating, throwing, etc.
Now, Ringo switched (or was forced to switch as Susan mentioned) from left to right when he was a child.

Re: was paul left handed.
I'm a leftie as well, and when I play my air guitar, I play it with my right hand.
Paul can play the guitar right handed, there's the promo music video in Coming Up where he played all the parts (Linda only did two) and there's some people he portrayed as right hand, unless he couldn't and faked it, can't tell.
Poor Ringo- who was forced to write with his right hand. I heard that he can still do things with his left hand. He listed some things in an interview once, I wish I can remember what he said now.
Mary, Paul's daughter, is the only Beatle kid that can right with her left hand, but she's also right handed- ambidextrous. Well...there's Beatrice, but she's old enough to write now and I haven't seen her write, so we may have to keep an eye out on her to see if she inherited her father's leftiness.

[/ QUOTE ] I never knew that about Ringo.
My brother use to be in a little league baseball team and I remember the coach forced him to bat right handed. My mother got very angry at him and told him that he can only bat the hand in which god made him. After that the coach let him bat with his left hand and he did much better.
I truly feel that it's wrong to force those that are left handed to write with their right hand.
It's not their fault that they were born that way. Besides who can help what feels comfortable to what doesn't when it comes to doing things.

Re: was paul left handed.
<font color="purple"> well, lefties are supposed to use the left (creative) side of their brain more, so that must be why Paul's such a great musician...John was also totally fab though and he's a righty. Maybe it's magic. I dunno. But that's what I've been told.
