I Feel I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You do not get the respect they deserve
These two songs are true Beatles classics in my mind.
They both are absolutely essential pieces of the Beatles catalog.
But when people mention the 'great' Beatles songs both I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You rarely get mentioned.
For some reason there is a bias against their earlier songs. Perhaps these songs are considered too simple and naive. Too straightforward. I don't know.
What I do know is that I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You are great.
I love the exuberence in their delivery.....
the very joy of being alive
It is life affirming really.
Brings a smile to your face and a lightness to your heart
Can people not see the beauty in this?
The carefree innocence?
The expression of happiness in its purest form?
The message of these songs really is that simple.
Music doesn't always have to be complex or wrapped up in mysterious lyrics.

She Loves You was the song that made me a Beatles fan when I was three. It rocked so hard...

By extension, I think the same could be said for much of the earlier material. Beautifully put, Matt.
That guitar break at the beginning of "She Loves You," between the "yeah yeah yeah yeaahhhhh," and the start of the lyric, now THAT'S rock and roll, my friends. Adrenal heaven. No wonder they screamed.

You described very well what it was and is that made these 2 songs great. There had never really been that kind of joyful exuberance in "our" music before then. Yes, the music was simpler than their later work, but these songs were more complex, more interesting, than what was around then!

I think "She Loves You" is pretty sophisticated for the times...I mean, all the other songs were "I love you" or "You love me", but this one was third person, SHE loves YOU...a guy telling another guy "Dude, you should appreciate what you've got!" That was pretty progressive for 1964. "IWTHYH" is also good, but does suffer a bit from being dated, at least more than "SLY", in my opinion.

"She Loves You" is one of my all time favorite songs and my first favorite Beatle song. When I was a very little girl, I used to love saying "yeah,yeah, yeah!" I thought the Fabs were so adorable, what with that hair toss to this song. I just love it!
"IWTHYH" launched 1964 as the Beatle year! It catapulted the Beatles into a musical juggernaut in 1963-64 and by 1964, it was the song that heralded the Beatles!
And since it IS written in the 3rd person, it was a distinction during its heyday of the Fabs' early moptopped performances. Matt5, you said what I've thought all along. Both of these songs are feel good songs and were in the Top 5 in April 1964 when 5 Beatle songs were in the Top 5!

Also what makes it distinguished, is that "She Loves You" starts out with the chorus. Something that wasn't done before.
And "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is what got them their fame in the US. It's got history!

I think they are amongst the best Beatles tunes ever, myself. Does anyone interpret "She Loves You" as being kind of cynical? Like the narrator is jealous that she loves you and not him ("yeah, yeah, yeah").

Never thought of it that way, but you just might have something there.
I just love the trademark "yeah, yeah, yeah" chorus. This has got to be one of my favorite songs, yeah, yeah, yeah!

I tend to interpret most of the songs from the first period as being really sad or cynical, even when they sound happy. I recognize it's probably all in my head and I'm thinking too much, by the way,

I remember once on tv, a great TV presenter called Roberto Pettinato, who used to be the sax in a great local band called Sumo, was interviewing an actress, and he asked to her:
Q - Beatles or Rolling stones?
A - Rolling Stones! They were greater, they didn't sang things like "yeah yeah yeah" (in a despecitve way)
So, this guy said to her: "If you were the one who sang at least one of those "yeah's" you wouldn't be where you are
lol, that was very funny for me.
